Chicago meetup for some out-of-towners passing through? July 23rd evening...

Hey! D.C. and I are going on a road trip this summer, and on July 23rd will be in Chicago overnight. We'd then do some sightseeing the following day and take off for my parents' in Michigan.

I know y'all have a fantastic meetup culture, and we'd love to meet you! Who's in? You Chicagoans would have to pick the location. We still don't know where we're staying yet.

(Bonus question: where's a good, inexpensive, non-bedbuggy place you'd recommend we'd stay?)

I haven't been to a meetup in a while, but those I have attended were at the Billy Goat Tavern at 430 N. Michigan Ave.

Hi Stewriffic!
The monthly meetups are the first Wednesday of the month at the Goat, but I would assume that as you and D.C. are visiting our fair city for one night, you might prefer to eat something more substantial than a cheeseburger or fried ham and egg sandwich.

So let's think about meeting for dinner, maybe? Or if a bar a place that isn't hella loud and crowded on Friday night.

And as to where to stay, are you going to do architecture sightseeing? Museums? Art Institute? Baseball?

Well, one thing we're going to do is go to Skokie (totally the other direction from where we're eventually going, but there's this deli I must go to). Otherwise I'd imagine we'd want to be in the city. I might just priceline/hotwire something.

But to be clear, I won't be able to go to a regular meetup, sadly. I'm hoping we can round together enough people to do an extra one. I love that you have regular meetups, btw.

I called a meetup at The Exchequer (fantastic deep dish!)the last time I was in Chicago...the main reason I didn't want the Billy Goat is because my opinion of their "cheezborgers" is "enh" ;-P.

I think Chicago's just gonna have to come to terms with 2 meetups a month, one of which revolves around pizza.

That said, they (Chicago Mefites) are all awesome.

Hi Stewie!

Friday dinner meetups can be tricky, crowd-wise, as the Giordano's meetup showed. (Or so I'm told.) Not knowing much about what kind of a crowd it draws on Fridays (and if it's usually a mob, we shouldn't try) my vote is that we go back to Pequod's. As "the guy who makes things happen", I propose the following:

Pequod's
2207 N Clybourn Ave
6PM
7/23

If someone hates the idea, or that doesn't work for you, Stew, we should do something else.

I will be in New Orleans, celebrating turning very very very old indeed. I am sorry to miss the second coming of Pequod's.

And you, stew, I am sorry to miss the first coming of stewerrific.

Pretty sure I've got nothing going on that day. Count me in. I second Spiffy's motion.

OK, Let's make it SpiffyRob's then. Thanks for being the Guy Who Makes Things Happen!

I'm totally excited. I haven't been to Chicago since about 1996. I used to go there a few times a year when I was growing up.

Thank you Spiffy!

I missed the Pequod's meetup and have never been. and as of now it looks like I can make it.

Yay!

Hey, I can actually pay for my beers in dollar dollar bills instead of churros this time because The Chainlink meetup is a whole week beforehand!

You should be very excited about meeting us, because we're awesome.

Also, can I tell you guys that I also love that we have a regular meetup culture, and love that we're up to two meetups a month now? July will be, what, the third or fourth month with an auxiliary pizza meet?

Also, can we call the second meetups the Ladies Auxillary Pizza Committee Jamborees?

I dunno. I think we need a spiffier acronym for it.

Pizza Auxillary Yearning Nourishment Engagements

You were expecting a Spiffier acronym from someone else?

Come. We shall all feel the PAYNE.

I'm also an out-of-towner who will be in Chicago then, but I'm not yet sure if I have that evening free. I'll be there for a month, though, so maybe I can catch the regularly scheduled meetup instead...

hey folks, I'm a semi-lurker over here and mildly active over at MeFight Club, I'll be in town on the 24th and would love to wander in to meet some real live MeFites. should I look for a can of beans on a table when I get there?
posted by phredgreen at 6:51 PM on June 29, 2010

Welcome, phredgreen! We'll likely be upstairs, and should be the biggest group in there. If not the biggest, probably the geekiest. Juliet will probably be all like LOOK AT MY iPAD and post up-to-the-minute table locations in this thread, so if you've got some sort of mobile browsing device, that'll serve as a fallback.

If all else fails, start speaking in Dutch, and Beardman will come to your rescue.

Hey, it's not me showing off my iPad. If I was the kind of person who was capable of having an internet connection and not dicking around on Metafilter what would I be doing at the meetup at the first place?

Fair point. Retracted.

If you're -4.5 in your right, -4.75 in the left, and promise to use them for good (i.e. attracting and seducing cute keebler bike kids), then yes.

Nother meetup newbie here, I'll have to adjust my work schedule but it is totally doable! If someone could mefimail me a number to call if I get lost I'd be happy, but I can probably find my own way.

Why are you going from DC to Michigan via Chicago? I have lots of road maps if you need one ;)
posted by desjardins at 6:05 AM on July 2, 2010

Hooray more Pequods! I suspect I can be there.

Reminder: If you signed up to win a bike last time we were at Pequods, the drawing is in 8 days.

Oh, desjardins, I didn't see that. We went to DC for a long weekend, and now we're taking a road trip to MI via Skokie (Kaufman's Deli, yum) and Chicago.

OK. SO! We'll be in Skokie for lunch on Friday afternoon, then check in at the hotel (Palmer House) and find parking (!?? Where? How much?) and then go to the meetup.

So excited!
