We're moving to a new server and the sites might be bumpy for the next few hours.
You might remember that we moved to new servers last December, and that went pretty well. But we've had a consistant bug that we haven't been able to squash. We're moving to a new server today to hopefully take care of it.
We just updated the MetaFilter DNS settings, and traffic should start moving over to the new server now. As with any new server, we're going to have to watch things and tune. There also might be some new bugs at the new server, so please post here if you see anything off.
You'll know you're at the new server if you see an asterisk in the footer next to the FAQ and Contact links.

Yes, apparently I've been let onto the new server. I'm sure it's an oversight and someone will be along shortly to see me out so that all the cool kids can get on with the party, but I figured I would just let everyone know so we can all get on with our Friday night.

Is there any public info on what the server setup is? As a geek who used to have to do server admin, I'm curious what sort of iron runs this place, how the load is distributed, etc.

It's very straightforward, three servers. We have a couple of beefy Windows servers. One for ColdFusion and one for SQL Server. We have a Linux server for static components like scripts, images, and stylesheets. (Some of those files are then distributed through CloudFront.) And that's about it. There's no fancy caching, virtualization, or load balancing.

Congrats. You guys run coldfusion on windows right? It can be tough to roll out new features to multiple servers let alone switch server completely. Well done.
I run 4 frontend. 1 rabbitmq and erlang, 6 backend, 4 DFS and 4 sql cluster and it takes me 4 hours.

hmm, the mobile menu does not work in opera mobile on android 2.3. I touch and it does nothing. It works in Dolphin so I don't know. Also, you guys are the Newt Gingrinches of servers. Why don't you just use several servers?!

I don't quite understand this reference, but a lot of the stuff that gets repeatedly served like CSS and scripts are cloud-based so they're served from anywhere. The servers we have seem to do the job just fine.

Actually, his conversational style was so exactly like a guy in one of my previous communities that one of the first things I did when I got admin access was check to see if it was, in fact, that guy.

I still sort of miss thomcatspike, who was similarly capable of writing in strange and lovely ways (though I don't think he was doing it deliberately, like clavdivs).

The staff icon only appears in MetaTalk, so if you're not seeing it in MetaFilter or Ask that's the way it should be.
