Holiday card exchange? November 6, 2017 9:38 AM   Subscribe

Would anyone be interested in a holiday card exchange? I'd also be happy to have a list of people who are interested in receiving holiday cards, even if you don't want/can't send any out this year - I love sending mail!

I haven't ever organized a card swap, but would be happy to try, if people are interested in participating.

I've been in them before where the list is split, either equally in half, or by groups of 20 or so - if you're interested, how many people would you want to send to?

I'm super-interested, and would be happy to send to 10 people, maybe? 20 max.

Oooh, I love this idea! I adore the Secret Quonsor idea but it's super overwhelming to me; this is much more doable!

I'd be in for 10-15 people.

Great! So if people are comfortable memailing me their addresses, and let me know if you would rather me email you the list or memail it back to you, I can send it out. If you'd rather email me, it's my username at gmail.com.

I will do chunks of 10 people, but if anyone wants to send to more, let me know, and I can add you to more than one group, if we have them.

I can put a list together and have it out to people by November 27th, if we want to make the cut off November 23rd to send it to me.

I'm setting up the tree so I have a festive environment for card writing (don't @ me - the artificial tree goes up the weekend after Thanksgiving and stays up through Epiphany in this house, and I love every moment of twinkle light).

posted by bookmammal at 10:14 AM on November 26, 2017

I asked this in memail. Apparently, the process is that all the interested names were divided into groups of 10 and then everyone in the group got the same list, which is why you should see your name on the list.
It is vital that you send yourself a card.

I sent out the swap groups to international folks first (and the international groups were a little smaller), and everyone received their own name. However, I then got a lot of questions about that, and realized it was sort of silly to send people their own name (although it made it easier to separate out swap groups).

So then, when I sent out the US only groups (which were slightly larger, 11 each), I copied and pasted, but then went back in and pulled out the person's name and address that I was sending the list to, so that there wouldn't be as many questions/so it would make more sense.

I dropped all of my swap cards in the mail this morning!

All y'all in my swap group:

I have been sick with a cough and cold for the past couple days, and have been basically confining myself to a locked room with a humidifier going 24/7 in an effort to combat this. Thus I have not had a chance to even PURCHASE cards yet.

Apologies that my cards will be delayed on account of my temporarily turning into an orchid.

I learned at the post office that they only have one 'international stamp' (I'm not sure what happened to adding up smaller stamps to get to the total but that doesn't seem to be the 'in thing' anymore), and it is 'succulent'.

To my Canadians, please enjoy the succulence*; to my Americans, please enjoy the snowiness.

While it's fun to research mefites, and I totally appreciate and think that's super awesome if you're actually doing that, I was worried I'd get too distracted doing that (ooh, shiny, what's that link about?!) and the cards would never get out on time. Just got back from posting. Seems like you can just go to the machine and get a worldwide stamp for a 20g card.
I think it was £1.40 so, basically, 2 first class stamps would do it?

My cards were 16g. I wonder how many words are 6g of ink. Could I write less and save postage money?

Anyway, all posted now.

So I’ve been stuck indoors all week because of the smoke (no fire danger tho) and the landlords moved their office from in the building to a few miles away. They are closed on Fridays so I won’t get a mailbox key until next week AND I’m even more behind on the cards. I feel awful, but I can’t wait to open the mailbox and mail out everyone’s cards.

Came home to a couple today. My own cards will be going out tomorrow!

Thanks for organizing this, needlegrrl. It's been fun seeing the diversity of cards y'all sent.

The last of mine should have gone out today. I'm laid up with a broken foot, so I've been giving cards to friends who visit so they can mail them. It's been a real morale booster to have mail from the internet coming every couple of days. They're on display on my dresser.

Thank you everyone!! :D

Posted mine out yesterday, and have started receiving them as well. Such fun!
(Annoyingly, my local post office only had religiously-themed Christmas stamps for cards, so my apologies for that to any recipients who don't celebrate it).

Just this guy, y'know - I am very impressed with your highly relevant card!

I sent cards.
I got cards.
The process works!
I believe in the process!

Thanks, paduasoy!

The written messages inside got progressively stranger the later on in the evening they were written, so you can all probably judge how late your card got written :)

Finally sent mine out yesterday! I have loved receiving all y’alls cards! My cat keeps walking through where I set them up and knocking them down, which I’m p sure is an act of love.

Definitely enjoying our cards here! I've been taping them up on the wall to avoid the cat bowling scenario.

Thus far I've gotten a couple cards, sent all mine out, and I'm watching the mail for the rest.

This actually may be a good test. My local delivery staff is pretty flippin' pathetic - I live in one of a row of 6 brownstones on my block, and we all FREQUENTLY get mail for other ones of the brownstones in my building. The carrier just puts it in the corresponding apartment number (i.e., I'm apartment 4 in 10 fakeymcfakeface street, and I'll get mail for apartment 4 in 12 fakeymcfakeface street instead). I always try to get the mail to the right building, but don't know how frequently people from other buildings do mine.

So if I've only gotten 7 or 8 of the ten cards I was suppsoed to get by the end of the month, this will give me the ammo to go to my post office and raise holy hell ("I only got SEVEN out of TEN CARDS that I know I was supposed to get. And that's just CARDS. How many PACKAGES may have gotten lost?")

EC, I haven't sent yours yet! So that's one accounted for.

Oh, I'm not calling anything "lost" until January 6th. It's all good!

I haven't sent mine yet - or made them yet! (That's scheduled for Sunday.)

my cards went out today as Snowy Day stamps were finally back in stock at my local post office. YAY!

So far I have received 5 metafilter cards, one from my secret quonsor, one from an internet friend, and one from a relative. INTERNET PEOPLE ARE THE BEST PEOPLE.

I have had some absolutely lovely cards from my MeFi peeps. I posted mine on Monday, so the international ones should arrive before Christmas. The UK ones, I posted second-class, so you might get yours by Easter.

I got yours! It has a sparkly pony who ate your hat!

I got all 10 cards! I also got 10 days worth of bills and stuff to deal with, so I'm making myself sort through that stuff first. But they are in neat little pile, sorted by size just because. My cards will be ready by next week at the latest.

Me, too; the cards I've received have all been better than the ones I sent, in every conceivable way. But there must have been a Christmas miracle, because I don't feel the guilt or shame I normally would. I had fun writing and sending them, and my heart's full of the spirit.

Yesterday, cards from internet strangers OUTNUMBERED normal and horribly dull mail. Thanks for teaming up to upturn that ratio :) THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER.

I got all my cards made, addressed, and stamped today! They'll go in the mail tomorrow! And I've received all my cards except the ones from Canada, for which I blame the border crossing. Thanks to everyone!

I'm still waiting for all my cards to come through...however, about half were from Canada and may just be held up.

I've also been similarly deprived by the cookie swap. Humbug.

I mailed my cards the end of last week, so hopefully they should be there sooner rather than later (I hope!). I have gotten a number of cards and I have to say, it was lovely getting happy mail this time of the year.

Yay! I have extremely enjoyed receiving cards from the internets! For one thing, you all got my name right, which is more than I can say for some of my family... but of course, it was even better than that! I have been very excited to open the mailbox every day this month!

Besides the consistent bonheur and well wishes from every card, I specifically *really* enjoyed my street name** re-worked as the newest Pokemon/monster :) by five-cents and the tea from mocha pickles!

**Just a pre-paranoid worry but please no mentions of my street name on the internets because I think it is the only one in the country with that name....

I must confess that my cards are in two batches because I ran out of stamps after telling my 14 year old that she could write as many holiday cards as she wanted. However, thankfully Quonsmas lasts the whole month long, so you should have them all by then.
