Metafilter Slowdowns October 29, 2002 1:14 PM Subscribe
Am I the only one who has been experiencing a good deal of downtime, timeouts, and generally slow surfing lately on MetaFilter?
I remember reading awhile back that signups were turned off the last time because of server strain. Is that the issue here or are we (is Matt) dealing with something else?

It's been slow here. as well. Everything loads properly, and the front page seems to be fine, but comments and links within threads seem to take forever (or maybe I'm imagining it.)

There's a dying hard drive that needs to be replaced causing most of the harm. I need to drop another gig into the memory as well. These things should take place in the next week or so, though it'll be kind of slow going until it happens.

I'll secondthird that. Slow loading has definitely been the order of the day. I've even seen a few "CFTimeout" error boxes.

No problem. We're always happy for an opportunity to complain about anything.

I would also like Matt to drop another gig of oats in my pony while he's at it. And reformat his ... haunches.

Pretty slow here at times, but of more concern are the frequent 404s I've been getting (including two lost comments).

Yeah, me too with the 404s, but I learned after the first lost comment to copy my pending comment to the clipboard before clicking buttons.

Hmm...has there always been an "uptime" category for MetaTalk posts, or have I gone quietly mad without noticing?

Because I have the new hard drive here on my desk and I've been too busy to go up and fix it. I am hoping publicly shaming myself will motivate me to remedy that. Heh.

Damn, it's hard to threaten someone with ones and zeroes.
On the other hand, I think "rat bastard" will be my new pet phrase.

Nah, I've got no problems with having someone's username as my pet phrase. After all, hasn't everyone gone through a MiguelCardoso period?

No, it's more like when your car won't start on a cold morning and you yell "Come on, you sonofaMiguelCardoso!", or something to that effect.
It's considerably more harsh than rat bastard and something that shouldn't be used around children or the elderly.
