All these meetups going on make me want one too. Madison? Upper Midwest? [more inside]

There's a healthy contingent of Madison Mefites, so we would be happy to host something here. If some of the outliers (Milwaukee, I'm looking at you) care to make the drive, we'd be glad to have you.

Dude, you guys should totally go to the Dells.

I'm sorry, that's all I know about Wisconsin.
posted by PinkStainlessTail at 1:55 PM on July 28, 2003

Funny thing, I used to work in the Dells, for a man with one eye. He was a photographer, took old-timey photos of people in period costume - that's a lucrative business opportunity, by the way - and he went to Florida after that summer and killed his mother.

Damn, and I was just deciding against going to visit Wisconsin for the CART race at Road America, and I hear y'all are planning a MeFi gettogether. Oh well, such is fate. :(

I'd love to do it, but won't be available until the end of August.

All these meetup reports about how much they suck are making me want one too. Boredom? Wandering around lost? [crickets]

I love the meetup idea for MeFi folks, but it doesn't seem to be working in the real world. It would be nice to see one of these actually work. What I hear people saying is that they need a *real* reason to show up (huh?). Or they need an event which isn't so much *work* (huh?).

Could it just be that we have no interest in socializing with each other? We've learned to deal with each other's BS in a virtual forum, but we can't handle the face to face version?

Hopefully the Regional meet in Vegas will work better? I loved the meetup I went to a while back. Things seem to have fizzled since then.

Or maybe west coast MeFi'ers are flaky.

Madison is a great town. Sadly, it's about a 5 hour drive for me.

Anyone in Central Illinois?

If there's a Madison meetup, I'm in. I think the trick would be getting several people onboard before committing to a date; maybe start by checking the handy "X number of Mefites live near this user" list in your profile, find those with e-mail addresses, and talk to them.

As for locations, I would suggest one of Madison's fabulous brewpubs, like the Angelic (my favorite) or the Great Dane.

We had one in Madison a while back, and though only three of us showed, it was a fantastic time.

I'm not necessarily looking to get *everyone* in the area to a meetup - lord knows I'd prefer to keep my distance from this guy - but just get a few familiar names and faces, maybe some unfamiliar ones, and have a chat.

And I'd go to Vegas, but I've already got a trip to Seattle planned this year. Alas, I get but one chance to get away.

We've had several meetups here in Seattle, and the one I went to went well - there were at least a dozen people and lots of conversation. I heard similarly good things about the next couple of get-togethers (which I did not attend because I was either forgetful or previously committed).

I think the success of any particular meetup is dependent upon the expectations folks set. I expect very little, mostly just to get drunk.

And I have yet to be denied.

Vancouver actually worked. We only got four people but that was one more than I was expecting – don't forget that we're working without the zip code lookup.

I had a good time and I think the others did too.

I'm in MSP but, calendar willing, I'd go to Madison for a meetup. Anyone actually proposing date/time alternatives?
posted by clever sheep at 10:07 AM on July 29, 2003

Right now we're working with late August as a starting point. Weeknights work best for me, but I wouldn't flatly object to a Friday or Saturday night, depending on the night.

As far as location, that's wide open. UKnowForKids suggested some downtown brewpubs, I'd go there or any old skanky bar (The Plaza? Mickey's? Le Tigre Lounge?). I'd even go to Pearl's, at the Best Western East.

Clever Sheep and trharlan: there was talk earlier of a Mpls meetup, maybe some time in August... Norm seemed to be the motive force behind it.

That is, if you don't feel like going all the way to Madison.

I think we'll have our own, thanks. But maybe (just maybe!) some of us will go the distance and crowd in on yours.

My entire extended family lives west of the Twin Cities, so I do get up that way. But I always forget about the no-liquor-on-Sundays thing. Is your state run by a bunch of Lutherans or something?
posted by rocketman at 12:05 PM on July 29, 2003

Madison is far, and Minneapolis is close. Based on past meetups, what times have worked the best? Of the following:

A. Weekday lunch times
B. Weekday post-work times (aka "Happy Hour")
C. Weekend days
D. Weekend nights

I would vote for A or B, just for my own selfish convenience, but would go with other options should consensus push it that way.
posted by norm at 12:06 PM on July 29, 2003

Is your state run by a bunch of Lutherans or something?

I can't believe Jesse Ventura could lower the taxes on vehicles and personal watercraft but he couldn't get any decent beer sold in the state on Sundays. *lousy blue laws*
posted by norm at 12:07 PM on July 29, 2003

A and B would probably be the most workable for me, too, since the weekends sort of get booked weeks in advance.

If we do go ahead with a Mpls get-together, and it involves alcohol, I nominate the Red Dragon on Lyndale... good frou-frou drinks, large spaces for gatherings, semiedible Chinese food if you're into that sort of thing.
posted by COBRA! at 12:12 PM on July 29, 2003

Minneapolis would be nice, since my little brother lives there, but the time involved is way too much for me. I'd rather stay in Madison, walk somewhere, and stumble home afterwards.

I have it on pretty good information that by the end of August, These clowns will live mere blocks from this pitied fool and this sucka. This jerk can drive himself there, and this yahoo can too.

This makes a very strong case for a neighborhood outing, though downtown is walking distance for everyone but the two drivers. End of August, then?

Ooh. clever sheep, that's an enticing proposition.

Let me check on that and get back to you, I could drive a carfull of Madisonians up there.

And if it's still warm, I might be able to secure inexpensive camping nearby. But like I said, let me check.

rocketman: As long as by "end of August," you mean after August 25th, I'm in. I'll be driving the ole girlfriend through the UP, Ontario, and Quebec out to New York for law school, and I'm flying back on the 24th.

Also, Genna's Lounge on the Capitol Square is another nice place. I just remembered that the Angelic is likely to have a DJ on weeknights (and is also frequently full of obnoxious undergrads...), so that might not be so hot, although I do love their beers.

They also sometimes have really horrible open-mic nights. As Madison breweries go, since I've fairly recently discovered that The Great Dane has a nice, dark basement bar, I'd rather go there.

I'm good for just about anywhere, though.

Except Genna's.

Count one more possibly in for Madison. I'm in Milwaukee, though, so it would have to be Friday or Saturday. August is going to be insane enough at work without attempting to make the drive to Madtown on a weeknight. (Plus, if we have it on a weekend, there's a slight possibility I can talk crystalblue into it. She's in Chicago during the week, but here many weekends. (Oh, sure, she may be a lurker here, but she's fun in real life.)

Maybe instead of meeting in between Madison and Minneapolis, we should consider Madison as the in-between-point for Milwaukee mefites and Minneapolis mefites?

...not that I'm in favor of it just because I live here, or anything.
posted by interrobang at 5:58 PM on July 29, 2003

Well, with that lead in from aine42, you can count me in as well, provided it is a Friday night or, preferably a Saturday (day or night), after the middle of August. Alternately, a meetup in the Chicago area during the week would work for me.

(crystalblue and aine42 hijack the meetup, move it 80 miles further east...)

All right, this is getting a little out of control. I'd prefer a big, big meetup that isn't mostly composed of people who I already know, but Chicago can have its own event.

I'd maybe be okay with Milwaukee, but not Minneapolis. In spite of being twenty-seven years old, I *sob* still do not know how to drive, and I'd rather not have anyone carting me around. We're all supposed to get drunk, after all! So, I'd prefer to stay in Madison.

I'd make a proposal about a date and time, but man, these things are really hard to coordinate when the thing's being pulled in every direction from a hundred miles around.
posted by interrobang at 6:11 PM on July 29, 2003

I'm kidding about moving it to MKE, interrobang. Madison's fine by me, as long as it's on a weekend. If not, crystalblue and I can have our own meetup here, like most other weekends. We're flexible that way.

Wonder if I could convince any other Milwaukeeans to make the journey west, since I know one or two of them. Hmm.

I wouldn't dream of it being on anything other than a weekend. Sorry if I sounded like an indignant jerk.

Heh. I'm 28 and married, and am imagining telling my wife, "yeah, I think I'm going down to Madison for a couple of days to meet people I don't know except through the internet." I wonder how that'd go over?

I will propose a date/time for a Minneapolis get together very soon, once my schedule is set (I'm finishing a summer job and starting school in a few weeks). It will be the week of August 25th, and it will be a weekday, and even if me and COBRA! are the only attendees I will not bitch.

Genna's and The Dane are both really good meeting spots, and I'm not saying that because they're only a 10/20 min. walk from my house, respectively. I'd also suggest the Essen House or Memorial Terrace if we end up having a decent size group. Added bonus: The Essen House is 30 seconds from my four person Jacuzzi.......just sayin'.

i hate college students. [i'm not being sarcastic either, i really hate them.]
posted by eastlakestandard at 8:09 AM on July 30, 2003

Wow. Excellent point. I'm so removed from the UW, I don't even think about that stuff anymore.

I can think of a lot of places we could go and avoid that rush. Some are even downtown. It's too bad Cay's Comic Strip burned down. It was conveniently located (right across from the Cardinal), very reasonably priced, and "kids" would have absolutely nothing to do with it.

How about:
Mickey's
Inferno (just kidding)
Great Dane basement (that's more snotty upscale professionals instead of undergrads)
Paradise
Le Tigre Lounge

As for the bars, I'll leave any decision making there to you folks out in Madison. I'm not really that familiar with any of the ones you named. One word of caution, though -- every time I get attached to a Madison bar, it burns down. I think I'm up to 3 so far. It's getting kind of irritating. :-)

I'd be up for either Minneapolis or St. Paul--I live right on the river, so it's six of one, half a dozen of the other.

If we're thinking rooftop--which sounds great!--I also nominate Brit's Pub during the non-swarmed off hours. Booze *and* lawn bowling....

I was there a few weeks ago for a post-wedding get together on Sunday afternoon, and it was great. Wholly uncrowded and a great scotch & beer selection.

Norm, looks like we've got plenty of interest; should we start quibbling about dates and times?

mrbula can ONLY do the 16th; Zosia B. has indicated it's a good date; I can make it. Can any others of you listed above positively NOT make it to a gathering on the 16th?

If we can get a date settled this easily & quickly, count on me to buy the first pitcher!

Welcome to my camp, norm. You'll be in the cabin out behind the lake, right across the way from the abandoned US Army psychological testing facility/ clown college. Don't worry about the noises at night, they're nothing.

I'd pretty much have to sit out clever sheep's dates... but if they work for everyone else, well, I don't want to be the guy pissing in the pool for everyone. I could always email a giant .jpg of myself which could be printed out and mounted on cardboard. Just pour some beer into it and everything's cool.
