Any interest in a MeFi Oscar Pool? [...]

There seems to be enough interest in the Oscar Nominees Thread that maybe we could cobble something together.

If there's enough interest, we could maybe put in some prizes, even. Nothing major, just something to play for.

Would you be up for something like this?

I'm in. I'll add MeFi to my acceptance speech when I win.

The MPAA generating publicity by patting each other's backs? The less attention we give them, the better.

I'm so in.

I'll make the pancakes for the awards dinner. We can have a statue of mathowie made to give out to the winner.

I'm going to go ahead and set something up. Input is totally welcome, nay, required.

Someone want to kick in a book (or an iPod, or a Lexus) or something? (I have a new CD coming out which I'll be happy to toss in the prize pool.)

We could use that little tipjar paypal thing that someone invented to fund a prize. I'll throw in $5.

I'll throw in too. Maybe everybody who enters has to kick in $5? Or, I can autograph a photo of myself for the winner.

Carved from spam, of course.

A-ha! So now we see the real reason behind the thread ;)

I gave up on Oscar pools when I left LA, where they are more popular than the traditional NCAA pools. I rarely see films while they are in the theatre, and I never agree with The Academy's choices, so I am set to lose anyway. I'll pass.

seriously, congrast on the new CD, chicobangs. Don't forget to let me know if you will be gigging in DC to support it.

You're probably better off not having seen any of the movies nominated. Since the Oscars aren't about quality anyway, you can just go on the buzz, which is usually pretty accurate. Your picks won't be influenced by taste--er, personal taste.
posted by goatdog at 9:12 AM on January 25, 2005

goatdog: yeah, I know. Just seems a waste of time to guess so much. The pools I entered in the past always had tie breakers of "best foreign short cartoon made by a one-eyed expat from Honduras" or something like that.

I'll get out of this thread now. Not trying to rain on anyone's parade.
posted by terrapin at 9:15 AM on January 25, 2005

I've seen none of the movies myself. And I have four questions:

Yeah? And? So? What?

Not my line, but -- seriously.

My money's on Big Fish starring quonsar.

I know - that is soo last year

I have two very good ideas for tiebreakers.

If we kick in $5 each, I can get us a real prize or two.
(If you're concerned about throwing dosh away, just know that Price Waterhouse is watching my ass like I'm a teenager on a webcam.)

So do we want actual prizes of even minimal value?

They are actually presented by the A.M.P.A.S., but that's just splitting hairs.

I'm down. I never win these, but I always enjoy them.

swag should be the prizes---who's gotten good goodie bags lately, or promo stuff?

I say we pool the money and create a custom mathowie bobblehead doll for the winner.

And count me in as a participant for $5 no matter the prize.

(Self-promotion's all right in comments, right?) Um, I've been running a contest on my site for a few years. This year's is already up and running. You guys are welcome to join in. Previous winners have received handmade sock monkeys, but this year the winner's getting my newest creation: The Soctopus!

My own annual contest is up and running now too, and you are all invited!

Alright. The Mefi pool is up.

Let me know if I'm forgetting anything, as it's kind of fluid yet.

I will also get in on Songdog's and web-goddesseseses, as I'll feel rather better winning those than this one.
