Photos of last night's San Francisco meetup.
posted by DaShiv to MetaFilter Gatherings at 11:38 PM (49 comments total)

In attendance were: ambrosia, caitlinb, cali, DaShiv, Gucky, jewzilla, majick, and a guest.

There's no place like home, and after the madness that was last week's LA/E3 meetup, it was great to sit, chow down on some pizza, and knock back a few beers with the ol' hometown gang. A few more new faces this time around, and much poo was flung in the direction of those who were truant -- especially scarabic, who finally got majick to show up but wound up skipping out himself. Well, not too much in his direction, since we still remember that whole dead body thing and all. Ahem.

Meeting up in broad daylight (daylight! my camera hardly knew ye!) was a nice change of pace, but I think there were a few requests for our usual weekend bar-type meetup for next time. Yea? Nay?

Yeah, I got a tearful phone call from someone who showed up at 8:30 and wondered where everyone was. We owe the poor thing a beer.

What the? No Heywood or TDDL? I was promised pictures of a monkey knife fight. That's still legal in SF, isn't it?
posted by loquacious at 2:46 AM on May 27, 2005

scody, I can see the whole melons/mekons/hot for x thing becoming the next meetup injoke. Or maybe the first meetup injoke? How long until we start getting "what's with the whole melons thing" MeTa posts? Someone add it to the wiki.

Hello to my fellow DaShiv-photographees!

best. meta. image. ever.

(except for maybe the "time-out" one, and sorry for the whole 'best'-with-periods thing, but I was moved.)

stavros, that's freakin' awesome. I think I'm going to cry. I promise I'll never again pimp your feathered little cloaca out to AlexReynolds.

What? Vanilla ice cream isn't $40 in this town?

(hides head in big spender shame)

Oh, here's the far less artistic snapshotty pic of the crowd.

You know, I was just at the DC meet-up, where everyone was attractive and intelligent, well-spoken and well-dressed. But looking at those pictures from SF, I've got a whole new vision of metafilter. You all West Coasters look like stars, big shining beautiful STARS. With the smiles and the insouciance...it just kills me.

Ambrosia, you have the most gorgeous hair.

Hi soyjoy!

jewzilla! cali! We totally could've had a Zombie Honeymoon reunion! Sorry I missed y'all.

Shh! It's supposed to be a, um, top secret artsy-fartsy impossible-to-duplicate technique that requires a superhero mutant factor and an uber photographer. Or something. Heaven forbid if it's something that anyone can pull off with a fast prime. :)

I'll donate $10 to the bring-DaShiv-to-NY fund.

With NYC being the the Mecca of street photography, I'm actually looking to make a pilgrimage to shoot there after I've finished scraping together some funds. I'll let you guys know if I ever make it out to that neighborhood to work some miracles for jonmc. Eventually.

It feels weird to see people you know from elsewhere on the 'Net in congregating in pictures, well, elsewhere on the 'Net

I'm all, "Oh, it's Gucky the doodler! And majick of the carrot loaves!"

Weird, but such a treat.

Sorry, I'm just jealous at all the attention you're getting.

Man... first I have to work late & miss delic$" pizza, and now I have to wash off all this flung poo.
posted by obloquy at 11:18 AM on May 27, 2005

Wow! That looked like "delicious" on preview. Some of that poo must have become stuck in my keyboard. Thanks a lot, Flingers!

I'll pay for all of DaShiv's drinks.

crap, I should go to one of these just so dashiv can take my picture.
posted by Saucy Intruder at 12:07 PM on May 27, 2005

I just got the most expensive bad haircut I've ever had... maybe I should have DaShiv come back to LA and take my picture again to see if he can make it look good!

" lovely smiles all round."

Indeed.

DaShiv -- let's say a fellow was to buy a Nikon DSLR. Is there a particular lens you know about that has similar characteristics to your super cool Cannon lens?

What do you mean? This is totally on topic.
posted by Mid at 3:08 PM on May 27, 2005

Listen to C_D: "/Stealthily pulls out his f/1.4 85mm..." The f/1.8 version works pretty similarly, too.

Bokah, baby. The 85/1.4 is the bokah champ. I'm still going to be dreaming about that lens when I switch to Canon. :'(

Mid: Just make it a fast lens*.

* - Fast = photo lingo for large max aperture, which is to say, small f/number. School thyself.

DaShiv takes the awesomest photos. seriously. And I've said it before... where are the uglies? I know that there are a bunch of us that populate this site... are they just not allowed on the west coast?
posted by shmegegge at 6:24 PM on May 27, 2005

where are the uglies?

See, we're smart enough to stay behind the camera. But umm, we have great personalities or something.
posted by DaShiv at 6:42 PM on May 27, 2005

DaShiv, you really take amazing pictures! And I'm pleased to see you're not ashamed of your melon fixation.

And confidential to cali - they *are* cute shoes, aren't they?

Sad to have missed you folks. I was pulled away for an unexpected but very happy personal occasion on behalf of a good friend. Trust me, I had every bit the hangover I would have earned with you lot :D

macjick! Did you have a good time? Who told you you would? Eh?

I had a lovely time, and I even got the privilege of meeting cb's pimped out ride (which is PURE DRENCHING SEX ON WHEELS, even for someone like me who would normally sneer at a one-speed)
posted by majick at 12:04 AM on May 28, 2005

I vote we all chip in and hire DaShiv to be our full-time photographer and he can just travel around from town to town chronicling teh Mefi for posterity. He will also need a traveling budget.

Thanks for the pics, 'shiv. Of the three metafilter members and dozen-or-so SF locals I've had any interaction with, two were (unexpectedly) there. Woot for serendipity! Bendy, make sure you come next time and we can get BRAAAIIINNN pizza.
