World of Warcraft Guild October 23, 2005 7:40 PM   Subscribe

A recent thread on something that happened on World of Warcraft led me to realize we probably have ... quite a few (?) players here on mefi. Anyone up for the idea of creating characters and a guild on a specific server? Please ignore this post if you are not interested.

hmm... are the Mefi guilds on Shadowsong still around? Most of my characters are on Blackhand, but I'd be willing to roll another alt.

Yeah I'd love to, actually. But I'm a cold newb without a clue.

How do I:

1) download the game
2) get started and not hate it for 3 months because I suck so bad and get raped killed & robbed constantly by more experienced players
3) find y'all up in all that nonsense?

I bought Warcraft 3 a while back. But that's probably completely irrelevant, right?

The guild we started before is dormant, it looks like. I'd be happy to be involved in starting another one with a bunch of people. I suggested the server I did back then because no one was currently on it, in the interest of fairness, but in retrospect it seems to me that it might be better for someone to have at least one high-level character on the server.

I'd not played for months, but the last couple of weeks I've taken my 38 Priest to 42.

scarabic: the funny thing about WoW is that the first three months (or at least the first month) is pure fucking honeymoon. Blizzard has packed the early levels so full of good sweet grind-free wonderment that you find yourself kind of disappointed when you hit level 16 and have to start, like, trying.

As for how you start: you pays your fitty bucks, you takes home a box. Or you find a friend who is geographically local who can lend you his CDs and a Guest Pass code (the latter of which you can get from us nerds on MeFi if your friend-with-cds doesn't have one) and you install and start up your ten day trial.

It is the crackiest of crack, however, being less flawed and more friendly from a casual player's perspective than any previous fantasy hack-and-slash MMORPG. You may well die. Or at least keep playing after your 10 day guest trial expires.

Wow - so I have to actually buy a physical object to enter this imaginary realm? How contradictory! But ok. Maybe I'll order it on Amazon or something.

Will someone volunteer to "sponsor" me please? I'd get a lot further toward being a worthy member of a group a lot faster with a single source for question/answer and advice. I learn damn fast, but only because I'm so good at asking questions. Anyone up?

And yes, I am a neeeeerd. Whatever that means. I think I'm also a jock, a mod, a preppie, a pornstar, and a hippie. I collect your labels like pocket lint.

I am considering purchasing WoW for the winter months since I can not garden. My mind is not made up though.

Sorry, i have enough horde characters, and I simply can't stomach another round of leveling up in the Barrens.

But, I *did* just make my first 4 alliance guys on the brand new Cho'Gall server, if anyone wants to start an alliance guild on a brand spanking new server.

My highest level character is on Mal'Ganis, (26 orc hunter), which has horde outnumbering alliance by something like 3:1. This is probably due to the SA Goon Squad choosing this server as their horde server...

Anyway if anyone wants to try this server I can help you out. I'm Absquatula (my alt is Merrily).

I dunno if we have enough people to make an active guild on a single server. I think people are pretty invested in their high-level characters...

On preview, emptybowl's suggestion sounds fun to me.

Also, if anyone wants to make an alt on Lightning's Blade and join the horde guild MsVader and I have with our friends (there's only 5 of us in the guild, i think), I'm sure I could sell the idea to our "guild leader". The only rule we have is to not be an asshat.

There's so many different servers and everyone's on a different one. It's frustrating. I think starting a new mefi guild (or branch of the guild) on a brand spankin' new server might be a good idea. I have noticed that the server that my main character is on, Silvermoon, is now something like 80% 50+ level characters. Which, I've found, makes playing lower level characters not as fun as it's hard to find groups for lower level instances and stuff.

Fnord, my Shaman, Boddington, will be on tonight. If you're interested, send me a tell and I'll get you an invite. That goes for anyone here. You're all welcome.

I'm liking the Cho'Gall alliance idea more the more I think about it, actually. I looked at some of the census data and I kind of like the idea of running around on a server where there aren't 23423423423 high-level people who can gank me. I mean, assuming I level quickly enough to keep up with the crowd.

So emptybowl, count me as one vote for that idea.

For future reference, here's my Cho'Gall characters:

Okay, I'm running the beginning of BRD tonight with my hordie on Lightning's Blade, but I'll try to be on Cho'Gall around 9-9:30 tonight, after MsVader goes to bed. (It's better for me to play Lameolas when she's not around anyway, since she said she'll probably never forgive me for making a female Night Elf. I just don't like the way the male NE looks!) I'll work on raising the money for a Guild Charter. How much is it? 10s? (I think I have at least half of that already)

Any ideas on names? MeFighters? Or something less lame?

I brought Strongle up to level 6 and he's in IF now.

This is a PvP server, which I've not played on before. I have no opinion yet as to how I'll enjoy PvP, but I will say that the population seems to me to be more juvenile than I'm used to. Lots of really stupid and annoying conversation on the general channel.

(This is where I hang my head in shame.)

I am willing to try to give this another go. After taking a break from WoW, I am back for small bouts of time. I'll roll a character on this server tonight.

But - for a guild name? "JRun Refugees of Azeroth".

Great guild name!

As an aside, I follow the virtual world academic/business/theory blog Terra Nova, and today they've added another academic to their roster. The entry annoucing this is funny:
The brow just keeps getting higher around here. Terra Nova's newest author, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee anthropologist Thomas Malaby, brings an agile and sophisticated understanding of modernity and its contradictions to bear on the contemporary meaning of play. From the social stakes of gambling in modern Greece (the topic of his first book, Gambling Life: Dealing in Contingency in a Greek City) to the ethical life of code in Second Life (the focus of his current, NSF-funded ethnographic research), the questions Thomas pursues -- and the answers he chases down -- light up the intersection of culture, technology, games, and chance like so many signal flares. Indeed, as I recently heard Thomas remark, while his Tauren druid and my Tauren shaman were out slaying Razormane Geomancers near Thorn Hill the other afternoon, "Die, you fat little spell-casting man-pig, die!"

Durkheim himself, I believe, could not have said it better. Please welcome Thomas Malaby.

Holy cow, you're right, beth! Cho'Gall is full right now. You know, I've never gotten that message on Silvermoon (to also answer cortex's question). I'm currently 451 in the queue and 24 minutes till I get in. Damn.

Cortex, I'm guessing that there's a difference in feel (and maturity) between the PvE and PvP servers. I'm pretty sure that I've heard that the RP servers are the most mature and well-behaved. But it stands to reason that the adolescent male crowd would be more attracted to PvP than PvE. The very frickin' annoying banter that was bugging me on the general channel on Cho'Gall was the typical posturing about which class and spec can kick ass, etc.

You know, it was reminiscent of MeTa, actually, as someone complained about the stupid chatter and why don't they take it to a private channel and the response was...wait for it: "you could unsub the general channel or ignore, jerk."

I hope some of you are on the server now. Beth, are you there? I'll add you to my friends list. Who's going to start the guild charter?

I'm worried about the queues... maybe this is just an initial thing, and few people will stick it out for the long haul waiting to get on... I don't know.
posted by beth at 10:18 AM on October 25, 2005

The queues aren't bad once you get into them; I used my 'queue waiting' time to clean out the fridge.

I'm assuming that most of us are in North America? If so, at least for now, we could maybe have a 'window' that at least a few of us will be on, so we can at least get the guild charter going. If MeFites know that between, say 7-10pm PST tonight others will be on Cho'Gall, they may be more willing to wait out the queue.

Okay, I have enough cash to get the Guild Charter, and I'm in Darnassus. Should I just buy it, and I'll start getting sigs tonight? Are we gonna use "JRun Refugees"?
posted by emptybowl at 12:11 PM on October 25, 2005

Actually, what distribution of races do we have? It might be easier for me to send the money to my human or gnome and have them buy the charter, since it's easier to get to Ironforge and Stormwind.

I think we have about 1/3 Night Elves, which means we're stuck on our side of the world unless we make the Elf Death Run through the Wetlands to IF.

Which I might do tonight, just for yuks and giggles. And to collect flight paths.

I'm taking three tylenol 4s and going to bed. But I'm real excited about a new mefi guild and I hope to see you guys soon!

Also, I, ahem, bought some gold specifically to distribute between mefi guild members for the purpose solely of buying the charter and buying tabards for everyone--not for nerfing. So you might wait till I get there to give people money for buying tabards. Unless you have a philosophical objection.
