NYC Meetup? March 14, 2006 4:58 PM   Subscribe

Noo Yawk Citay! I'm coming for a visit and I'd love to meet some of the NYC crew. I'll be available from Sunday, 3/26, to Weds, 3/29. Anyone want to get together in there somewhere? My calendar is pure vacation in that window and pretty open. I could also use a hotel recommendation... [more inside]

I want to stay somewhere that will be a good homebase for a few days. I prefer funky to posh, somewhere with cafes and bars, nothing showy or too upscale. I really don't know New York but names like Greenwich Village and South of Houston ring a vague bell as possibilities. Anyone know a decent hotel thereabouts? Or somewhere else fitting the above description?

I know I'm late in reserving and everything will be ungodly expensive. Thank god I don't have to pay for all of it.

Hey, I've never actually be to any other meetups, but drop me a line. :) Email's in the profile!

There are a bunch of suggestions in various AskMe threads, but my vote definitely goes to the Howard Johnson Express on Houston and Forsyth.

sure! let's do a meetup Sun or Mon night? Someone pick a place.

If you want funky, you can't beat the Hotel Chelsea.
posted by lilboo at 6:34 PM on March 14, 2006

The Chelsea is definitively funky. If you want something a bit more downtown and funky in a completely different way, I highly recommend the Off Soho Suites, on Rivington just east of the Bowery. My small-town Texas parents love visiting with the international (frugal) hipsters who stay there. Arriving at the coffeeshop, I've rescued many a hapless traveler facing interrogation about rainfall patterns, lectures on proper barbecuing technique, or worse.

Me, I like the Soho Grand.

Meet-up sites? Ben & Jerry's on Elizabeth and Houston (NE corner) has a good beer selection and plenty of room.

I'm in NYC that Sunday night 3/26, though I have a feeling people have more fun at meetups when I'm not around (you people go to hook up, right? Being a married guy that doesn't drink much, I feel like I'm dead weight at these things).
posted by mathowie (staff) at 8:52 PM on March 14, 2006

only a few people hook up, and they're usually very subtle about it

let's definitely do Sunday, and we can start early if ppl have things to do or just want to make an quick cameo appearance.

People hook up at MeFi meetups? Color me naive.

Omigosh - scarabic and Matt? Woo-hoo! I'll cancel plans to attend that.

For digs, I'd suggest the Larchmont on W. 11th, between 5th and 6th Aves. Cheap, good location. Don't know if they have a website, though. And drinking is always a good thing.

Hey it feels like it's been ages since the last meetup. I'll be there (no doubt with mr. g in tow.)
posted by gaspode at 8:29 AM on March 15, 2006

Could we do an afternoon thing? I could make that, not the evening.

I've been told that The Washington Hotel has good rates (~$100 a night in the late 90s), but I don't know how reliable my source is (his parents were staying there, but the rate seems unbelieveable to me). You might want to give them a call, though. It's right on Washington Square Park, which is an awesome place to stay and in the heart of the village.

we can start at 4 or 5, i'm thinking...

i might be able to swing by a meetup...

AOL! I wanna meet ya'll in real life.
posted by NucleophilicAttack at 12:41 PM on March 15, 2006

Matt! How awesome would it be to hang out with your "dead weight?" I'll drink your share.

Let's do it on Sunday 3/26! Now... location! I'll cab it pretty much anywhere but like I said I don't know the city. Who's got an idea for a venue?
posted by scarabic at 12:44 PM on March 15, 2006

Hey those hotels (the hojo and off soho suites) are both within walking distance of this bar that's very relaxed, and has all night happy hour on Sundays: http://www.lolitabar.net/
Too bad I'll be in DC that weekend...

If #1 is there, I'll go.

I'm in. I was just thinking about suggestion a meet-up this morning. I miss you guys.

Location, location, location...

Or suggesting a meet-up...no coffee yet.

If all goes well today, I'll probably be moving into a new apartment by then. How 'bout we have a party where we play a game called Jonmc's Moving Company? That'd be a hoot!
posted by jonmc at 7:00 AM on March 16, 2006

Woo woo, I will be there! (at the meetup, not at Jonmc's Moving Company- sorry man).

We could always meet at ole reliable Revival (near Union Square).

Why why why in the hell do you guys always suggest meetups when I'm going out of town? Why?
I've been here all damn winter...

We hate you hellbient. There. Now you know.
posted by CunningLinguist at 9:40 AM on March 16, 2006

Ah, closure. Finally. It's a good thing.
Thanks!
posted by hellbient at 10:04 AM on March 16, 2006

oh, and my mom wants to know how you could possibly hate me?
posted by hellbient at 10:06 AM on March 16, 2006

Well, for one thing, when you come to meetups, you're always too cool to stay for more than 15 minutes, you bastard.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 4:13 PM on March 16, 2006 [1 favorite]

you shouldn't hate me for that, you should thank me.

Don't think I don't hear the muffled applause as I'm leaving.
posted by hellbient at 7:36 AM on March 17, 2006

What is the sound of one hand clapping?
It's not likely I'll be able to make it, but I keep checking back here as if it will change my sunday situation.

The chain-letter email stopped working, looks like someone's email address no longer works, so CC-all fails.

Alls I have to say is that the Ding Dong website said Chinatown, but I guess its not that chinatown, so I
retract my opinion, leaving me with no opinion whatsoever.
posted by StickyCarpet at 1:27 PM on March 17, 2006

Well dangit, I'd like it to be at Ding Dong Lounge, since a sizeable portion of us MeFites are Upper West Siders, but I understand that it's a bit far north for everyone's comforts.

Lets let scarabic decide, since he's out guest.

I'm staying at the Park Central, which is a block or two from the southern tip of Central Park. (I tried followin up on several of the excellent suggestions here but found them booked).

I can cab anywhere, so I don't have a strong preference, but if my midtown location sways the decision at all, there you have it.

Will someplace in "midtown" work for all? I'm happy anywhere, really. Accessibility is usually key to attendance.

Alright, I'm calling Revival, right near Union Suare- sorry UWS, you'll just have to travel like the rest of us (but nice try, as usual).

Sunday 3/26 at Revival at 6 p.m.? How does that sound for everyone?
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 10:56 PM on March 17, 2006 [1 favorite]

since a sizeable portion of us MeFites are Upper West Siders

debatable, sir.

i haven't been to one of these in awhile

(and thanks to thepinksuperhero for reminding me)

i might as well show up to this one.
posted by Stynxno at 3:16 PM on March 19, 2006

I'd resolved to at least show up at the next meetup, but this one, oddly enough, has me out of town until late-ish Sunday night.

I've neglected my sister and this community for too long, but my sis will have to come first. It's her Senior art show. Perhaps I'll be lucky and make it back in time.

Whatever and whatever about me - I hope YOU have a fun time in New York, scarabic. May the meetup be raw and raucous (in a good way).
