Yet another London Meetup?

I'm thinking Friday, 16 February. If it's practical, I'd like to reserve a function room at a Central London pub that serves food. In order to do that, I think we'll need at least 15 people, so chime in here if you're up for it, and we'll go from there.

Yay! I'd be up for this.

Trouble is, I'm trying to grow my hair out from stubble, so I'm going to need some sort of guarantee that nobody'll take the piss.

Why do you need a function room? What's wrong with mingling with the riff-raff?

Obviously most years I would be heading off to a luxurious country hotel with a lucky lucky lady for Valentine's weekend, but this year other prior engagements mean I'm going to be kicking my heels in town instead, so that date is probably a yes. Count yourselves lucky, people.

I'll be able to join you later. Probably not until around 8ish which should rule me out of the food equation. Have you a particular boozer in mind?

Why do you need a function room?
Just personal preference. As you know, pubs in this town tend to get very crowded and loud on Friday nights. A function room would give us a little breathing room, while still enabling us to rub elbows with the riff-raff, if we so choose.

Magnificent.

However, we had good luck with the simple table reservations before (that turned into having an entire room...) we don't necessarily require a complete area to ourselves, or massive numbers. Some of the best meetups I've had have been "four people chatting shit round a table for a night".

Also, being surrounded by random members of the public gives us the opportunity to use our cool Metafilter signs to chat up women. Who doesn't want that!

The women, mainly.

16/2 is my anniversary. So not this time -- soz.

Dammit, could anyone else possibly try and book something on that day? Now I have to make a decision as to what two other events to cancel.

Venue-wise, I thought last time's place was good, and sizeable enough. Also Sam Smith's prices are obviously a bonus.

I believe, in theory, yes*.

*subject to change.

I'll try. It's half-term week so a bit hard to predict.

I'm going to see Swan Lake at the Royal Opera House that night - zounds. Ah well, have fun!

No can do, (although I may be flying back that day). But let's face it, after a week in Ireland I'd need a liver transplant if I went out with you guys again!
Optamystic kept stealing my wine and I still got pissed ;-)
If I do make it I will make every effort to get some more women, you guys are wasted on each other!

Cannot make it again. Ne'er mind, I'll make it to one soon, I hopes.

Me: There's a MetaFilter meetup on your birthday. Can I go?

Girlfriend: Of course you can.

Fortunately, I speak fluent womanese, and this actually means I can't attend. Given the unusually high numbers that can't make it that weekend - how about the one after?

As always, I'm in Cardiff. Until the end of March.

The Friday after would be spiffing.
posted by TheDonF at 2:17 PM on January 24, 2007

The weekend after is not good for me, I'll be off getting my fake MA.
posted by chrismear at 2:20 PM on January 24, 2007

I may well be more able to get to a meetup on the 23rd - anyone else?
posted by dash_slot- at 2:28 PM on January 24, 2007

No can do, going to a concert on that day. Weekend after is fine though.

Oh, and the week after not so good for me, as I'll be in Cornwalleicestersershershire.

I should be able to do the 16th or the 23rd. I am, as ever, pro-function room.
posted by sueinnyc at 3:32 AM on January 25, 2007

In-thread count so far:

16th - 7 people, 2 maybes.
23rd - 5 people.

Personally, I can't do the 23rd but I am as yet ambivalent on the 24th. Thoughts?

Thoughts?

It's been fun having record numbers of people at the last few meet-ups, but a smaller affair or two wouldn't be a disaster, and might in fact be a nice change of pace.
posted by chrismear at 5:02 AM on January 25, 2007

Count me as a maybe to. Actually, count me as an "I hope to god I'll be there because otherwise I'm totally screwed for non-meetup-related reasons".
posted by fvw at 10:56 AM on January 25, 2007

So... should we have... both?
posted by armoured-ant at 12:44 PM on January 25, 2007

If it's the 16th, I'll be in town then and am fairly sure I could make it.
posted by brujita at 2:09 PM on January 25, 2007

(The 16th it is! Still!)
posted by hugsnkisses at 6:14 AM on January 26, 2007

I can make the one on the 16th...although I said that last time.
