Tony Pierce is auctioning off a link from his blog to yours.

It's already up over $15. Looks like a lot of people want it, but really only three guys are bidding. Good idea. I wish I'd thought of it, but considering that I think less than twenty people check out my website with any resemblance of regularity, I'd probably end up paying someone else for me to link to them. Not as cool.

Is he probably looking for more traffic? I fell for it!

I have no blog, no website, no nuthin'. I wonder what he'd do if I bid and won.

"I demand you post a link to this goat porn site!"

"Fuck. All right."

I know Tony. That would probably not be a problem.

I hereby present the following competing lot:

The winning bidder will receive one (1) link on my web log. This blog chronicles my hilarious hijinx and is viewed by probably no one but myself, though I promise to load the page often and might even click through.

This is a dutch auction. There is no reserve.

If he's looking for traffic, it worked.

believe it or not, but i really thought that i would get traffic from my friends ken layne or matt welch, but matt went on vacation and ken obviously hasnt read my site in a few days.

but yes, i did it mostly for the traffic, but never thought that i would get a link from MetaFilter -- and certainly not MetaTalk, but believe it or not, the good people at Internet Gossip has given me the most hits.

when no one had bid after 3-4 days, i really thought that i would be the laughing stock of all of my friends. but now i guess they'll have to wait a few days till i do something even dumber.

I'm just upset I didn't think of it first.

judging from the auction description, this guy is a jackass. I won't be giving him any hits in order to confirm this fact!

mcsweetie, i must respectfully disagree. I think its witty. I visit tsarfan's [tony pierce] site though, and i'm familiar with his style, read some of his stuff, then read the auction description again and then see what you think. I would do something similar, but my 5 hits per day doesn't inspire a bidding war.

Skot, how come? I always enjoy your comments. You should consider building a site. I'm sure there's plenty that you don't get to say on MeFi that would be fitting for a daily journal.

Wow tsarfan, I had prevously had you listed as a minor-league attention-starved asshole.

welcome to the big leagues.
posted by ttrendel at 10:35 PM on February 28, 2002

I'm not particularly attention-starved, but I have been assured that I too am a Grade A Export-Quality Asshole. You got a problem with that? Can I join the Big Leagues too?

It's all a game for goodness sakes, and it's not zero-sum. Sheesh. Relax a little, enjoy the joke.

(In other, less subtle words, folks, enough with the insults. No call for that.)

Stavros, that gives me an idea: new abstract game for surrealists and others. Hog The Asshole.

so let me get this straight: think up a silly idea, create an eBay auction, talk about it on your blog, auction gets 3,000+ hits, site (that day) gets 34,000+ hits, guy who says he hasnt even read my blog calls me a jackass, guy from indiana without a blog calls me an asshole.

i must be doing something right.

Who is Tony Pierce, why is he a fan of the former emperor of Russia, and what is this eBay I hear people talking about?

What could Matt auction off?

Here's one - membership expulsion rights - allowing any individual to buy an option to bar someone that pisses them off. Obviously this idea is entirely unsuitable for MetaFilter, is juvenile, derisory and silly. Could be fun though.

So owillis knows tsarfan. ummh. Between you two, you have got a bit off a former teen idol duopoly going on there. For my money Anna wins hands down.

Oliver I'm a touch surprised that Britney hasn't been onto you about the Sport yesterday publishing nude photos of her from when she was 17. I have not personally seen them, so I can't vouch for there authenticity, but regardless, she must be concerned.

You should consider building a site.

Careful what you wish for (unless you also wish for a site featuring nothing but Kate Winslet photos and shallow, rambling screeds vilifying Kevin Smith movies). Thanks, Karl, that's very kind. Perhaps once I get the in-tar-net at home.
