april 25th new york city metafilter gathering update: camworld has suggested a change of venue to the remote lounge, where a friend of his is sysadmin and can guarantee space for a large group. i think this is a great idea...[more inside]

as i've been wanting to check out the remote lounge for some time, but it just seems like it could be so dorky (and not good dorky, like telling perl jokes during a dinner party) and/or technofetishistic (think recent issues of wired), that i've been reluctant to do so. plus, it is my understanding that the place is always either completely packed or utterly deserted.

for a mefi party, however, i can't help but think that a semi-virtual space like that is just so apt...and the group rez. thing should eliminate the problems of over/under-crowding.

also, it's just down the street from the pioneer, so we can split and reconvene if we're overcome by the bright lights reflecting off of evanizer's sexy bald head. other thoughts?

There is no cover on weeknights at RemoteLounge. If the group meets at Pioneer and migrates to RemoteLounge, that is fine. I'm just throwing this out as a suggestion, since the RemoteLounge is a very fascinating mix of technology and society, which seems like it would fit this group well.

I've been to remote and it's pretty cool. There are camera controls at most of the seats and the results are projected over the bar. Good way to people watch. You can see what most people focus on here.

The ISP for RemoteLounge has been having some connectivity problems today. Keep trying. It's a cool concept.

Dudes, I have the invitation all made up with Pioneer on it. Please let's not change venues now! Maybe we can moveover to Remote later, but I think this venue changing is just going to be confusing.

I hate to be like this, but I agree with ev here - it should be at Pioneer - which sounds cool anyway. You can still hit on ev there mlang. don't worry.

Hey, at least it's in the city.. you may convince me to show up.

Maybe.

I mean, is there anyone who *really* wants to meet me, anyway?

Okay, okay, okay.... wherever it will be, can visiting MeFi folk from out-of-town come on down?

grabbingsand, speaking from experience, the NYC Mefi crew make out-of-towners feel like they are the guests of honor. Go, boy!

The RemoteLounge is a revolutionary new bar with 60+ webcams and consoles set up that allows the patrons to check each other out.

I am disconcerted by a bar that thinks it's "revolutionary". But it could be weirdly interesting and it's nice to have reserved space. How much are drinks compared to pioneer? I'm broke.

I vote starting at pioneer because it's like 3 blocks closer to where I live. Actually, maybe that means I should vote ending at pioneer so it's easier to stumble home... I dunno. I will leave it to the wisdom of other filterians for the moment. Just make sure to send me a reminder / invite!

Cam, can't we do Remote Lounge next time? Plans have already been made, there's no doubt there's plenty of room at Pioneer, and people need to have these things settled well in advance. We can't go around just changing plans, or else people don't show up: every time you change a venue, you lose people who don't get the new information. I have zero vested interest in Pioneer--I only recommended it--but the reason I recommended it was so we wouldn't go fumbling around in a half-assed thread for three weeks (like we did last time) with everyone half-heartedly suggesting a venue. I was pleased that we developed a consensus so quickly, and now you're going to go and ruin it with a late entry! Bleh!

Also, RemoteLounge is *so* six fucking years ago. Am I the only one who remembers the web bars with big vid screens and cameras that use to seemingly be everywhere in New York? The idea was over-rated then, it's over-rated now, and I give the place 12 months before it goes under or changes its theme. They've got more money, and it's cooler than the old joints, but the idea is tired and suitable only for the tech-innocent, the kind of people who walk back and forth in front of electronics stores in Midtown so they can see themselves on the television monitors in the window. Tech has for too long been too distinguishable from magic for me to be amused by this bar's concept. Maybe I'm just tech tired, but get me the hell away from my screens for an evening, please.

Pioneer, please.

Mo Nickels- Cam's suggestion was interesting, but too late. We decided on Pioneer, and that's final. I made the invitation/reminder email, as I mentioned, that I will send to anyone who posts a yea on this or the other thread (provided they have an email address in their profile). I'll send the reminder out on the 19th or 20th. Anyone who lives in or is visiting the New York metro area is encouraged to come. Again, the info is:

April 25th, beginning at 8 PM @ Pioneer (on the Bowery, between Prince and Spring Streets, New York, NY).

Pioneer it was called for, Pioneer it is. I'll be there with bells on and I'll bring my guy and my camera.
mlang and camworld: call a MeFi meet for the Remote Lounge sometime in May or June and we'll be just as happy to show up there too.
Juggling dates and places with this many to satisfy isn't possible unless somebody says: Here! When!
See y'all at 8 on April 25th at Pioneer.
[Feel free to set a date next month for the RemoteLounge.]

so... for those of us who'd be arriving late (if at all) -- how do we find the mefis?
posted by meep at 2:52 PM on April 7, 2002

I suggest we all get some of those "Hi My Name Is:" stickers and write our username on those... It will fill the evening with lots of "So you're [userfoo]...I thought you'd be taller."

meep, I doubt the group will be very difficult to recognize. C'mon... Look for a bunch of pasty, sullen-looking geeks doing the "funky chicken".

Besides, we'll probably drive all the regular customers out of the bar.

evanizer may be "pasty" but there's those of us who are "big, yellow and different" (tm) or other such non-pasty colors ;)

8 PM? What are you people NUTS?

I get out of work at 5.. maybe 5:30 the latest.. what the heck am I supposed to do for 2 1/2 hours? Sheesh.. if everyone is in the city, it should start at 6pm with cocktails and bar food.

Some of us are old farts with families, you know.

(or at least with wives that get impatient with all the late night drink fests in the city)

ummm.. yes to n9. and anyone else that has ever made any one uncomfortable.

8 is between 5 and 11. everyone feel free to get there some time earlier or later.
