For tips on "Vaguely Competent," see our own caitlinb. In addition to attending meetups all over the US on her travels, she's got the Bay Area MeFites whipped up practically into a social club at this point.

Keys would seem to be:
1) firm time/date from the get-go.
2) Reminder 1 week ahead of time.
3) Reminder night-before.
4) Be there & be totally cool, so that, in the future, people will jump at the chance to come to a meetup with you.
5) Have a cell phone and sleep in front of your email inbox with one eye open.

My vote is for 5 March. Before then is too early IMHO.

I'm certainly up for a meet up. I think I'm free the next couple of weekends.

Bah, only the weekend of 19-20th March for me, although I'm sure you guys wouldn't mind spending more than 1 night in the pub per month.

vote for the Sir Richard Steele, Haverstock Hill. Next weekend.

I wouldn't mind popping my head in the door - any time around March would be cool along with a couple of weeks notice so I can get time off work/sort out a babysitter. You can do it around about March the 7th and buy me a birthday cake (or several pints). Does it have to be London though?

I could be persuaded..

London is so very far away now. Cornwall anyone?

And to echo longbaugh, why does it have to be London? The Oxford meet-up proved more successful than any of the London attempts (to my knowledge). Why not consider somewhere else? (Obviously Cornwall is pretty unlikely, and so is my attendance, which at least gives me the luxury of being able to suggest this from a less biased perspective.)

I'll go halves and say "Devon".
Meet you in Exeter, my house, say around 7:30, 8-ish.

I am, unsurprisingly, up for it - wanna catch up with the dodgygeezer, sarge, P_G, et al. I'd prefer early March, if poss, but will try to acommodate any date. West London preferred, if London it be.

Dodgy - wanna make it a viewropa/mefi combo?

Dodgy - wanna make it a viewropa/mefi combo?

Why, of course! And maybe we can get a few new recruits too.

Why not consider somewhere else?

Good idea. I suggest Cambridge. ;)

Can't do weekends, I only work down there during the week. I *can* recommend the best pubs in London though (most of them rather hard to find).

We're so f'ing English about this.
"Oh you decide."
"No, you decide."
"Oh I couldn't possibly."

So you decide.

I'm around the evenings of 16-19th.
Pass the tea, please.

If it's in London I'll try and make it, if only to return the generous shout out given to me by scarabic at the recent Berkeley meet up.

OK, it looks like NinjaPirate's dates are out for me unless my tattooist breaks his fingers again. The weekend of the 11th is unlikely unless it's the Sunday.

Can I suggest 5th March as a good date (at least for some of us)?

Incidently please note if you can only do weekends as a weeknight might be a solution (and good for hardcode too)
posted by dodgygeezer at 12:37 PM on February 18, 2005

Personally I can only do weekends since I don't live in London.

And so it goes.
This is why we can't have nice things (in the uk)
posted by seanyboy at 6:20 PM on February 18, 2005

Sure we can. If we pick a day far enough in advance, then most (but not all) people who really want to go will be able to put it on their calendar and make it. If we try to pick a date within the next couple of weeks, or to time it so that we can do it when such-and-such just happens to be in town, then it will be harder.
posted by grouse at 5:44 AM on February 19, 2005

Funnily enough I was going to suggest doing both - pick a date soon that most people can make then set a date (in May or June for example) that everyone can make. That means we'd have to be twice as sociable but I'm sure we could cope.

Of course self flagellation has thrown this thread off the front page now so I wonder if we're going to miss any other people who'd be interested in a meet up.
posted by dodgygeezer at 6:28 AM on February 19, 2005

Yeah - maybe when the self-flagellation cools (when, oh when will that be) we'll announce it again...

Give me a couple of weeks notice, and I'll be there, for definites. I wanna lay the boggle-eye on you peeps.

Actually I can do Exeter...
