NYC MeFi Meetup? Anyone interested?
Sure. Can we do a Friday, though? The L is running as the Shuttle Bus of Doom (from Lorimer) every weekend in April, and I'd like to only have to choose between it & a car on the return trip. Not this Friday, however.

Can we try Manhattan (better subways situation). I'm coming in from Jersey (work... I only go to the Jersey for the money, I swear..) so the island works best... Is that OK with everyone? If it's OK with you, suggestion (Bar? Cafe?)

I probably won't be able to make it if it's on the 15th, as I'm away that weekend, but otherwise I will try to come. Now that I tend to work till 7, downtown, I'll likely be later to any Village/Midtown meetups than I used to be. Not that I'm exactly a fixture :D

The cupcakes are next door. I do not bake them. In fact, amberglow paid for them last time. I just held them up for the camera. Well, I did find them, too, so that helps. The lemon are the best. So: Magician early & then moving on to less cranky climes. If no one else volunteers, I can put my number up on my user page so the late can find us.

It has nothing to do with vibe, and if it were a question of even *two* trains, sure. But when you have people coming from Jersey, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan, Manhattan is central.
Have you ever noticed that none of the Brooklynites insist we have meetups here? I'd love it if I could just roll out of my house and into a barful of MeFites. But when you move to an outer borough, you sacrifice proximity for cheap rent. Ignoring that and demanding people come to you whatever the distance is just being a bad sport. And that sucks.

Me, I have to walk fifteen minutes to the M, take the L to First & walk fifteen minutes, or be lazy and take the L to Sixth, then take the F back the way I came. Am I bitching about it? Why, yes, we do have bars where you can smoke--inside. Bars that look like City of Lost Children (or Cité des enfants perdus, as us educated Brooklyn-dwellers say). Bars with desserts that will charm your pants off and wine that removes the rest of the outfit. But I'm not allowed to tell those troglodytes from Queens about them. Ruins the atmosphere.

Yeah, but out hre in Queens, we have bars filled with old guys from back in the day who'll tell you endless stories about the New York that was if you buy 'em a beer, and real Irish bars that still unironically have "Danny Boy," on the jukebox. in Brooklyn you're more likeley to end up sitting next to a design major from Grosse Pointe in an overpriced 'vintage' t-shirt commerating a summercamp he never went to.
Also there are two Queens, Urban Queens which extends to Corona, and Deep Queens, which is everything beyond. But luckily the whole borough is so gauche that it's gentrification proof.

Don't whine to me about having to take an extra train. For the record, I have to race out of work at 6:30, drive to my grandmother's in Washington Heights (free parking) which could take 10 min or 30 depending on traffic, then grab the A train downtown, then find my way to the DMZ line or whatever the fuck goes by the Williamsburg Bridge.
Next time, I'm just calling for a North Jersey meetup and NOT IN HOBOKEN. Somewhere where there is parking. Maybe a picnic in Rockland Lake State Park, which would be nice because it's not actually IN New Jersey. But no bridges will have to be crossed!
So, in short, change me to a maybe. And if I'm coming, expect me to be late. Seriously, though, I just found out I may need to be in Pittsburgh that Saturday to settle my father's estate (old business, sadly).

I'm all the way up in Ditmars, and the hipsters don't want to live with hairy drunken greeks, and the ones who do are content to become part of the neighborhood rather than take over. So we manage to have gourmet coffee and old school delis with salami hanging from the ceiling living in harmony.
And I wasn't dumb enough to buy into that whole giving-up-exciting-sex-for-security thing you people call "monogamy."
I call it domestic bliss being out of the combat zone known as "dating," which never suited me to begin with.

I used to hang out in the Bronx back in my school daze (Kramden's on Arthur Avenue rocks) and that's where pips teaches, and I've always wanted to hit City Island, there's great seafood and a great record store full of Latin Jazz goodies that I want to hoover. But my Uncle Genio lived on Staten Island when I was a kid and I had a blast spending summer at his place. Seriously, I wasn't terribly serious. However, I do have my own gripes.
I'm just tired of carting myself hither and yon. It's not central to MetaFilter, it's just part of living here. People NEVER come to Queens; it's like it's 19th Century Deepest Darkest Africa or you'll get poisoned by natives in the Amazon.
I ALWAYS have to go somewhere else, whether it be any of the other four boroughs. I've lived in Astoria for several years now and the only person that comes over is my girlfriend.
I don't agree that it's a pain in the ass to get to Queens because I commute from Queens to Brooklyn all the time (the biggest pain in the ass for me is Lower Manhattan). However, if you do believe that, the flipside is also true; it's a pain in the ass for us Queens people to get where you are.
Anyway, I may show up Saturday and I'll definitely help the Astorians put on a show this Summer.

People NEVER come to Queens
It ain't just a Queens thing, NYers in general are bad about this. I can't remember the last time someone visited me in Bushwick. I guess it helps to have more than 3 friends though. Boofuckinhoo. So yeah, I'm leaning towards coming.
It's sort of an unwritten rule that the further you are from Manhattan, you will commute towards it, as opposed to vice versa. Whenever I mention the opposite, the reaction is always sort of "huh, that's cute...seriously." The exceptions are Rock-n-Rollerskating and the week or so after 9/11, when Manhattanites decided, "hey, I've never been to (insert outer borough)." Williamsburg doesn't even count anymore, IMH3FO.

(1) the one meetup we had last year in Queens was fine and well attended.
People will complain regardless. You just factor that into any planning you make. But anyone kvetching that Queens is some verboten DMZ to everyone else is just shooting their mouth off.
(2) I can't make it next weekend. I have plans I can't get out of. I'd like to meet the "special guest" and all, but unless this person is around the night before and is willing to maybe grab a quick drink (hint, hint), I'm out. Sorry.
