I've noticed a recent trend of non-moderators directing what is okay and not okay to talk about in threads. Speaking for myself, it has restricted good faith participation and is off putting in a way that promotes a cliquish community. Especially such authoritative tone coming from a non-moderator can come off at best confusing and at worst discourage discussion, especially from users are not frequent visitors. [more inside]

Long comments can be difficult for some users to read, navigate, manage. At what point does a comment get to be unwieldy for those reading it? [more inside]

I have noticed something lately, certainly not a new thing, but maybe it's time for a reminder: Someone makes a post on the blue about a thing, probably because they think that thing is pretty good and worth sharing, and the comments are all along the lines of "this thing sucks." Remember: It's ok to move on without commenting. [more inside]

As is not uncommon for threads regarding U.S. politics, the Dispatches from the Upside Down thread involves a debate between a leftist majority and a liberal minority. The thread seems fairly typical to me, in that about 10% of the comments are from a liberal perspective and about 90% are from a leftist perspective. [more inside]

To be clear, I don't plan on eviscerating anyone, but I do wonder if there's an existing "if you don't have anything good to say..." status quo. I've never been active in either, and don't have a feel for it. Personally I *hate* having my work presented in an insincere critical environment, and prefer to both give and receive "something good/something bad" style comments. I'm particularly concerned about MeFi Music, because 1) I've experienced sensitivity re: my own music 2) It's music! It's arbitrary! ...but you hold back development by having people blow smoke up your soundhole.

MeFites are one of the most consistently interesting groups in which I am allowed to hang out. Some MeFites write or have written books. Hook us up, wouldja?
