Is there some sort of informal way that we can self-organize into a network of volunteers that can provide local assistance to AskMefites in need? Or maybe have the option for location information on AskMe questions so that we could receive alerts to local questions
a la IRL? Or something? (Apologies in advance -- this is long, half-baked, inarticulate & rambly.)

Has there ever been any discussion about setting up something like a legal or medical fund that could help out MetaFilter users unable to afford? Or perhaps a broader MetaFilter hardship fund?

DisasterFilter Pony: This spring has seen some horrific devastation around the world. Is there any way, using our profile locs or something where we could compile a list of mefites near disasters so we could make sure they're ok, or see what help we can get to someone who is already on the ground where it's happening?

I NEED HELP.
Okay, I know this isn't the point of MetaFilter, but I'm desperate and I don't have time to find out this information on my own.
I have a friends mother who is trapped in New Orleans and I need to find out who I need to contact to let them know where she is. Red Cross is no help. If anyone out there knows who I can contact, please let me know.
