Jokey non-answer? That's a [n-length] bannin'.

How long should a generally good contributor be banned for giving a
bad jokey answer to a controversial AskMe topic?

Banned or Not?

Re: Rove
Seriously, if this doesn't come out everywhere on Monday morning and this turns out to be a stupid rumor, truthout and rawstory links are going to be banned from mefi.

Self-link ahoy

This is the second time RonZ's linked to komar.org. The first time was to the halloween lights display and this time it's the christmas lights. If I recall correctly, the original poster of the christmas lights thing was outed as a self linker (although I can't find the thread) so I suspect it's a sock puppet at work.

Banishment History

Is there any history of banishment here? And if so, what happened to cause being banned? In all my years of visiting, I have never read about an actual occurance of this.

I did a couple of searches and came up with nothing.

Should banned users' profiles reflect the reason for their status?

If a user is banned for blatantly violating the no-self-link rule, would it be a good idea to either a) note the banning on that person's user page or b) delete the user page entirely? Seems strange to keep a user page from someone who took a dump on the community.

Ban Alert

If this isn't an offense worthy of banishment, it should be.

Pleas explain timeout durations

Banned from MeFi? Are there any hard and fast rules? Why does lazy-ville get banned for weeks, others only a week, and others forever? If I ever happen to step on someone's toes while on a bender or something, I just want to know what the results might be. Also, is there any page for information regarding who's been banned in the past?

Banning a User

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and I know there will be detractors, but I'm going to ban this Ed V... guy soon. I built this place, and it wasn't for trolls like this. My reasons are as follows.

He's mucking up the place. It's as if you were talking to people at a party and some guy barges in on the conversation, saying outlandish things just to get a rise out of people.

It's got nothing to do with his positions, it's that everything that comes out sounds like trolling bait for other people to argue with. I've seen it on countless numbers of online forums. The last place I remember seeing it was Slate's boards (called, "the fray" heh). It seems there was a small pack of very conservative posters that would tromp on any thread that mentioned abortion. Every response from them was pure trolling, and usually done in all caps. Every one of their posts would be followed by 5x as many posts refuting everything they had said, but then they'd follow up with more trolling. It rendered any sensible discussion meaningless, which is what I think was the inteneded purpose.

So that Ed guy is gone very soon, and I don't feel bad about doing it.
