I
promise that I Googled and searched with the on-site engine, but I just can't find things I know for sure are there - namely, AskMe questions about getting young adult children to gain independence.

My friend and I were discussing MeFi and came to a point of contention when estimating the number of new users MeFi receives per day. My guess was 5 to 10, his was 25 or more. Perhaps this argument can be laid to rest here. How many new users does MeFi average per day?

129 comments, and on, and on. . . . Have we become too big to have a meaningful conversation anymore? Who can read and process 489 comments and then make a meaningful contribution? Are we becoming just like
Slashdot and
Fark, where only the heartiest of souls have the energy to follow the multi-hundred comment threads?

Welcome to
ascullion, a member since May 1, 2003. Did I miss something? When did new users signups begin again? Only asking because I've got a couple of online buddies who would be interested.

Okay.
I asked it in a thread, and only got
one response. My question for the masses (without an agenda) is this....we've obtained about 1500+ new users in the last 4-6 weeks. When do we start talking about turning sign-ups off again?

MetaTalk of late has been living as accelerated an existence as the Mothership has. With complaints, controversies and crises coming in every few hours, it increasingly seems to me that MeTa needs to catch its breath. More inside.

200 posts in 8 hours (150 in the first 3)? My, how time flies when you're having fun.
Is this the future of MeFi? An explosion of comments so overwhelming conversation is useless?

yikes, Matt. what do you mean MetaFilter's filling up (note on the front page at the top right)?

Speaking of MeFi's growth, I spy upon logging in tonight that there are 2,997 members. Will there be some sort of swank party to celebrate the joining of #3,000 or will the lucky so-and-so just get a year's supply of Turtle Wax and a copy of "MetaFilter: The Home(page) Game"?

I wanted to see how Metafilter has grown since its launch, so I crawled the archives for thread/comment totals for every day since July 1999. Then, I wrote a script to
plot all the data in line graphs and tables. Click on the links to drill down.
It's interesting to see how quickly the commenting community have grown. At this rate, Matt will have to build thread-within-thread support to handle the sheer number of comments.
