Hoder has been released from Iranian prison

Mefi's own Hoder has finally been released from prison. Hoder (Hossein Derakhshan) had been sentenced to 19 years on "cyber-dissidence" charges after his Persian-language blogging software became a popular tool for critiquing the government.

Iran released 80 political prisoners...not Hoder yet

In an attempt to smooth things over ahead of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s visit to the United Nations Tuesday, Iran has released 80 political prisoners. I cannot find a list of all the names, but it appears Hossein Derakhshan (Hoder) was not among them. Among those released was Hamid Ghassemi-Shall, also Canadian, and arrested the same year that Hoder was (2008). [more inside]

So apparently hunger strikes work after all.

One step closer. Today, jailed Iranian-American dissident Roxana Saberi had her original term replaced with a suspended sentence and was freed from prison, allowing her to leave the country immediately. However, there is no word yet from Iran regarding our own Hossein Derakhshan, hoder on Metafilter, who was jailed along with Saberi three months ago. [more inside]

Hoder Hoder Hoder - Hoder is a name that's fun to say three times

I ran across an interesting blog this morning written by an Iranian living in Toronto. It's called Editor: MYSELF. The publisher, Hossein Derakhshan, had a strong piece, "Democracy's Double Standard In Iran," in the International Herald Tribune/New York Times last year and seems bent on demystifying Iran's politics and leaders...
Iran's Bloggers. Well deservedly, Hoder gets a shout out in Steve Clemons's The Washington Note. May we all benefit from the prestige of our association with him. Oh, wait, we weren't mentioned. Well, all the same, three cheers for Hoder.

hoder rebuked by Iranian government

Despite all the political squabbles and armchair revolutionaries around here, it's not that often that one of us actually personally pisses off a dictator. So let's all give a hearty congratulations to Hossein Derakhshan, our very own hoder, who recently earned himself an official rebuke by the Iranian theocracy for his tireless efforts in keeping pro-democracy Iranian blogs alive following the mullahs' crackdown on them. Tabrik!
(And cute pic, by the way.)
