How about an update conversation on the post megathread era?

It seems to me that the change has been a positive good for Metafilter. Change being the doing away with the Megathreads. Even the sidebar has stopped moving. What are your thoughts?

Metatalktail Hour: Family Jargon

Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, Too Ticky wants to hear about the "expressions or jargon are used only in your family or friends group -- Bonus points for stuff that no one else would understand." This kind of question is straight-up my jam so I look forward to giggling for the next several hours!

FPP Etiquette: acronyms, abbreviations, and jargon

This recent FPP includes acronyms not explained in the post; and, generally, even for someone (me) who is generically science-literate at an undergrad (+, depending on the area of science) university level, it's pretty unclear what the post is about. I've had complaints about some of my comments being too technical for the general metafilter audience, so I imagine if I found myself having little idea what the post topic was about after reading, it's probably unclear to many other folks too. I'm a little sad about this both from a quality of Metafilter FPPs viewpoint and from a quality of public science communication viewpoint, as someone who cares about both of those things. In short: the links therein might be the best of the web, but the FPP isn't. Can we try to do better please? Would a reminder on the new post page that posters should keep the entire Metafilter audience in mind when crafting posts perhaps help?

Unpacking the viral ninja hack guru in the cloud

This AskMe thread about new and overused business cliches/jargon is a thing of beauty.

Jargon 2010

I hereby nominate "threadshit" as MeFi jargon word of the year. While it's been used as early as 2007, this year saw 30 total uses in blue threads. This is up 40% from last year, and makes up 70% of all prior uses of the term in all prior years.

Win the thread.

What's the deal with people "winning" threads all the time?

Another f****** jargon thread

It's like I'm reading a foreign language, and can pick out a few cognate nouns.

Easing the transition for new users.

20 neophytes a day - and I'm one of yesterday's crop. Fresh-faced, clean-skinned...

As a Content Editor at Everything2, I'm intimately acquainted with the stickiness inherent in introducing new people to an online community (especially a content-oriented community, as opposed to activity-, hobby-, or interest-oriented ones). There seems to be a dearth of documentation. I guess this site is pretty self-explanatory, which is refreshing - I've been an E2 user for two and a half years and I still occasionally scratch my big, fat head. Also, after such a long, long time with no new users (I know it was a long time because I spent a long time checking the new user page), you guys must be experiencing something of a shock, too.

Any ideas as to what could be done to ease the transition for newbies and allay the angst, if any, of the old guard?

Feel free to kill this if I'm out of line, long-winded or otherwise. I'm a new at this.

MetaFilter jargon.

MeFi's secret language has been growing by leaps and bounds lately. It's always more fun when you're in on the joke, so here's the spot to post glossary definitions.
