Dataviz ahoy!

While I'm not a fan of the plethora of infographics available online these days (and lame SEO attempts to capitalize on them), I decided to make a tongue-in-cheek infographic for MetaFilter, and as everyone behind the scenes at Team MeFi scrambled in the last week to gather up all the interesting statistics we could, I threw it all into photoshop to produce this: The 2010 Year In MetaFilter Infographic. Enjoy!

Here is the site. Some results are definitely interesting though. I wish you could click on a node and see its address.

Meta-freakin-omics

How do the economics of MetaFilter work? I know this may be kind of rude to even ask, but it seems to me that this is an awful lot of coding and maintenance to be financed only by five dollar donations and small non-intrusive ads. Speaking of advertisements, does it cost Matt money if I use adblock to remove the ads before I even see them?

Alexa statistics

What does this tell you about the quality and appeal of posts on Metafilter over the last few months?

By comparison Monkeyfilter, Memepool, Slashdot.

130,000 hits per day! (2003)

Say no more about the overload, in fact I rather welcome having something like 130.000 hits in one day, something to brag about in the pub when things get a bit dull. That was after my link crashed Johnny Spencer's artchive of Jamaican and American R&B on the 23rd. In disbelief, I wrote and asked for real? and got: 23rd, June = 133,130 hits or 2.2 GB bandwidth. I had no idea we had that much impact.

Thread/Comment and User Growth statistics, July 2001

Thread/Comment and User Growth statistics are up for July. This is the first month that threads and comments actually dropped slightly, largely because new user signups are still disabled. Also, we broke 10,000 user IDs yesterday. Congratulations, Ricci.
