I'm not sure if this a MeFi bug or something with my browser or set-up. I have experienced this on different computers and tried reloading Firefox, but I think that it is still going on. What gives? Is it some sort of local proxy or cache issue? I'm at work right now and it's definitely doing it, but this has happened to me at home as well (I am 95% sure). [more inside]

This has probably been covered previously but I couldn't find it. Can I post to Projects for a friend? It's a good project that I think MeFites would appreciate. It's non-profit and others might like to check out similar things in their communities.

Once upon a time not so long ago, I could type in the FQDN http://www.metafilter.org and actually resolve that address and browse Metafilter threads from my office. Now, when I try to use that address, it automatically reverts to http://www.metafilter.com and that address is blocked by my company's "Smartfilter" as "chat/forums". I can't read threads at work anymore and I'm pretty sad about that.

Them purdy buttons. Bold, Italic, Link, Spellcheck. I use Opera. I can see them (and they work great, too) if I connect using an ssh tunnel & web proxy (I use the SSH Express service from cotse.net). I do not see them if I turn my proxy off. Whassup? The fancymatic preview works whether I use the proxy or not, so apparently it's just the button bar that's discriminating against my naked Opera.

Dear Coni Yohen,
Thank you for taking the time to compose and send me unsolicited email begging me to post in your blog and create a link to it on MetaFilter. [+]

Bug report: MeFi has suddenly started relying on IP addresses to identify users. A coworker just emailed me with a screenshot which showed that he had my session (he has no account but was identified by my username). Loading the blue just a second ago, I myself was identified as a certain milnak whom I do not know (but that person is located very close to me geographically). The unifying thread seems to be that we work for a certain large software company and thus all access MeFi through the same outgoing HTTP proxy.
And yes, I know, I should get back to work instead of reading the blue, etc, etc.
Side note: metatalk still identifies me correctly as blindcarboncopy.

I think this is a great and interesting post. I find it all the more interesting because I got a weird, spam-like email a few moments ago asking me to post the exact same link to Metafilter....

I've been getting, interesting behavior using metafilter through a proxy server. (The reason I'm using a proxy has to do with some annoying behavior by both Opera and Mozilla under FreeBSD.) wwwoffled just doesn't get the page at all. apache2 running as a proxy does get the page after more than two minutes. This behavior appears to be unique to metafilter.
Turning off proxying for metafilter in the browser works much better. I'm mostly satisfied with this arrangement but the nerd in me is curious as to why. (And the community-oriented person in me wants to describe this problem for other folks who may need to search for this problem.) Any clues?

I'd like to discuss the appropriateness of allowing non-users to post by proxy, in relation to a conflict here between Medley and myself. [more inside]

Someone sent me an email saying he hadn't any posting privileges and wanted to add his comment to a thread I'd started. I posted it by proxy. I now have severe misgivings, expressed in that thread, reacting to mr_crash_davis's objection. What should I have done? The comment, by Thom Carlson, was intelligent and cogent and did provoke some lively responses. He's now sent me a second email, backing up his first comment.
I remember rebeccablood's thread about posting a link for someone and how most people felt it wasn't OK to do so. What about a single comment? Do the same principles apply? Please advise as I'm at a loss...
