How do I hack a MeFi URL if I only have the post number and not the title? For example, metafilter.com/68665/ does not work, but metafilter.com/68665/Back-to-the-Future does. [more inside]

PonyFilter: Can we add a preference to remove the post titles from URLs? I occasionally read Metafilter from work. I clicked the Baby playing with a snake post and had a moment of terror as I viewed the URL.

It would be neat if the UTC date and time of postings could be incorporated into their URLs.
For example,
http://metatalk.metafilter.com/14082/Metafilter-Shoutout
could appear as
http://metatalk.metafilter.com/20070525-2249/Metafilter-Shoutout
There would likely need to be an additional digit after the datecode to disambiguate between threads posted nearly simultaneously. The benefit would be to let people see how old threads are when mousing over links to them.

I know the issue of commercial urls in user profiles has been discussed and neither Matt nor Jess give a damn. But really, this is too much.

MeFi link filter: I'm a self-proclaimed newbie and have unsuccessfully tried to answer my question by skimming the FAQs and searching the site.
How do I compose links so that a mouseover displays the title of the link and the related URL, as it does in the following posting?

Pony: any chance of having the ability to look up a user by appending their username name to the "/user/" URL? The user number is okay, but being able to have the name as well would be really helpful.

Not sure if this has been suggested before (searching on MeTa currently isn't working), but I'll suggest now that FPPs go through a little post-processing to add a coral cache link to all outbound links in the FPP. It might make sense to have this be an option the post author can click on/off (CNN doesn't need to be protected from traffic, some dude with a Geocities page does).
Something equivalent to this could be handled on the client side, using some Javascript or a Greasemonkey extension, I suppose, but handling on the server side would be more universal.

When I click on the username in this archived MeFi thread I am taken to an old post with the same number as the user, i.e. the url says 'mefi' instead of 'user'. Only true for the original post, not for comments.

Lots of people have complained about MetaTalk being banned as a "gaming site" so I created a new secret URL for MetaTalk too.

An URL posted here has changed. I posted a link to the Glass Engine on the weekend as http://www.philipglass.com/glassengine/#. The URL now coded inside the Metafilter page is http://euphorbia1.client.dti.net/glassengine/ but it fails to connect. The www.philipglass.com site appears to be down as well (and I really hope I didn't get the place MeFied) so the original URL doesn't work either. This is not a redirect I'm talking about: the code in this Metafilter page is different. I just checked http://www.jerrykindall.com/ where I got the URL -- and his code has changed to the new URL, too. Say, you all aren't trying to glasslight me, are you?

I've been SmartFiltered out of MeFi at work. I swear I only looked when I was doing a build. Mostly.
I tried using Ben Brown's MeFi/RSS demo but it's got no links. Bad enough I can't see the discussions, but no links! (It's kind of like wanting a cigarette and having to make do witha picture of one.)
Where do I want to go today? Without MeFi, I haven't got a clue.
Is there a solution, or am I doomed to be more productive at work?

Ok, consider me confused. For the last 20 mins or so that I've been looking at MeFi & MeTa the addresses as they stand in my favorites list, www.metafilter.com & metatalk.metafilter.com, give me zilch & the MetaFilter homepage respectively. On the other hand www.metafilter.com/index.cfm & metatalk.metafilter.com/index.cfm produce the index pages as I expect. For one godawful moment when I first tried to access MeFi I thought that it was down again. Spare me the anguish.

When will MetaFilter be able to block links that have already been posted by other people? I think it should only be one or two lines of code to compare the URL against a database of previous links (plus a line to perform some sort of fuzzy logic for variations on links). Oh, and I think he should add programming to keep people from posting lame stuff too.
Like this post.
And that one down there.
