Well, what day of the week would be best? A weekend meet up would be nice, so I wouldn't have to worry about work in the morning.

Also, any idea of good bars to check out? I like the idea of going somewhere I've never been.

I'm a big fan of Bar Great Harry, in Cobble Hill. It's cozy, but they have a back room that tends to be empty, especially on week nights.
posted by bingo at 6:38 PM on November 28, 2009

Hope I can make it! I've been liking some of the newer DUMBO bars lately, like ReBar or Speak Low. Or maybe I just like excuses to go to DUMBO.
posted by functionequalsform at 7:44 PM on November 28, 2009

I second Bar Great Harry. Although drinking 40's from paper bags by the Gowanus Canal is also always a winner.

I am also in favor. The previous Brooklyn meetup was the bees knees.

I request we have it sometime after the 15th, because I'll be out of the state until then.

After the 15th works for me.

I like the 15th of December and drinking malt liquor by the Gowanus.

I third Bar Great Harry, I've been meaning to get in there.
posted by vrakatar at 10:15 AM on November 29, 2009

Nthing after the 15th. Speak Low is a great bar that I've mentioned here before. It's always quiet (a little too dark, maybe) and has tons of room. It's by the F, A/C and 2/3 trains, though the 2/3 stop is a bit of a hike. I am convinced everyone in DUMBO is too busy raising babies to drink much, which is why Speak Low is eternally deserted.

Is Bar Great Harry big? I've walked by it several times and on the outside it seems small-to-medium. They seem to have a good beer selection, though.
posted by zoomorphic at 12:10 PM on November 29, 2009

I'm in for Great Harry, looks pretty sweet. If anyone wants to meet me at the Union Street bridge over the Gowanus beforehand for 40s, the more the merrier.

Saturdays are better for me, too. How does Saturday at BGH sound to everyone?
posted by zoomorphic at 7:53 PM on November 29, 2009

Neither of those dates work for me, but as we're working with a limited window, if they're what's best for most people I say go for it.
posted by ocherdraco at 7:56 PM on November 29, 2009

I like ReBar very much, and it's got lots of space and is generally queit, so it would be a good choice, as would be BGH (which is slightly less convenient)
posted by andrewraff at 8:53 PM on November 29, 2009

I live three blocks or so from BGH and my local comic book seller moonlights there as a tarbender. I think it is bigger than it looks. I suggest a Friday or Saturday night, on the early side. If it gets jammed we can grab beer and beat cheeks back to my place- the dog will love you all. Or we can invade Ceol.

I'll poke my head in there and explore the space and see if we can work out a deal of some sort for three for one drink premiums. The only negative I can think of is it may not be as roomy as Soda was, but i think we can get in there.

Saturday the 19th, at BGH works for me.

I would be more likely to come on a Saturday, fwiw.
posted by smackfu at 7:45 AM on November 30, 2009

Coming late to this -- but another alternative place is Rocky Sullivan's in Red Hook which also has a big back room -- the stage goes unused on Fridays for the most part, so the back room would work.

Okay, yeah, I know it's Red Hook, but Rocky's is awesome.

Saturday, the 19th, yes. I'll leave the "where" up to ya'll. Yay.
posted by functionequalsform at 11:24 AM on November 30, 2009

I love Red Hook bars too, like Bell House, but I feel guilty making non-Brooklyners take a subway to a bus. Then it's meet-ups in midtown forever.
posted by zoomorphic at 11:58 AM on November 30, 2009

I love red hook, maybe because it's hard to get to. We need to do a red hook meet up someday.

Also Saturday the 19th works great for me.
posted by deliquescent at 2:35 PM on November 30, 2009

I still advocate BGH. If it gets too crowded, there are a ton of other places to go on the same block, and it's close to the subway (F/G Carroll St. stop).
posted by bingo at 6:52 PM on November 30, 2009

The earlier the better. I'll go out on a limb and say 6 p.m. I'll poke my head in there today or tomorrow, see if the person(s) I know are there and what they advise or might be able to do for us.

I emailed with the manager of BGH. He says that if a few of us get there around 6 and sit at the big table at the back room, it shouldn't be hard to take the room over gradually as our crowd builds.

I can be there at 6, as I live nearby...
posted by bingo at 8:57 AM on December 3, 2009

I can be there at six also. Was waiting for today (payday) to check it out, but bingo seems to be on the case.

See ya'll there!
posted by functionequalsform at 8:11 PM on December 3, 2009

Are they cool with me bringing food?

This is not an official endorsement, but if you're discrete, and also order a drink, I don't think it will matter, especially since we'll be in the back room.

So yeah, guys, the basic deal seems to be that it does get crowded on Saturday nights, but the back room is dominated by one big sitting area, and if a few of us can get there around 6 to secure it, we should be okay.

I'm trying to catch the ear of mefites that're running their mouth, I might get some of my Brooklyn Mefites to run up on your house. I don't really understand what all the running's about, but we're hunters and we take pride in airing our prey out, leaving them dead, just for sport. Because we aren't playing up here in New York!

I'm once again advocating Speak Low because of its large space and awesome, awesome $10 cocktails. I know $10 isn't much of a steal, but those bartenders mix drinks like a science. They also have food there, or you can upstairs and get some Asian fusion at Rice.

posted by grobstein at 5:48 PM on December 13, 2009

I can be at BGH as early as I want to block space. Every place is going to get crowded that night, so I am not sure what to do as far as moving the whole shindig, but I think we should start there and move on as it gets packed, maybe start a phone tree for latecomers as to where we are.

But, this was called by defenestration, so I'd say whatever he wants to do, we should do (don't worry Fuq I'll come get you).
posted by vrakatar at 8:16 AM on December 14, 2009

I was quite psyched on BGH. So let's just do it there and see what happens. We may have to strong arm some innocent bystanders, MeFi-style—whatever that means.
posted by defenestration at 10:05 AM on December 14, 2009

This is also happening that night, later. I can't go to it, but I've been and it is SUPERFUNKY. They do them at the Masonic Temple in Brooklyn where it is byob, we should keep our eyes open for the next one there and show up in force.
posted by vrakatar at 11:55 AM on December 14, 2009 [1 favorite]

No problem, and I didn't mean to strong-arm someone else's bar rec out of the door. I had received a memail about BGH perhaps being too small, in case someone thinks I'm just a dick who ignores the sidebar.
posted by zoomorphic at 11:17 AM on December 15, 2009

Guys, we're supposed to get six to ten inches of snow tonight.

o_O

If I come to Brooklyn, will I be able to get home to Harlem? Other times it has snowed a lot since I moved to New York, I've generally just stayed put, so I don't have a great sense of how much the subway is affected.
posted by ocherdraco at 11:02 AM on December 19, 2009

also, the worst case scenario actually includes someone waking up in a snow drift, married to someone they don't even know (kathrineg)

Person: [waking up] Why, what's this? I'm cold, and in a snowdrift.

Spouse: *snkkx*

Person: And who is that? [Looks at hands, which are likely a little blue, and notices ring.] Egads! It appears I've become joined in holy matrimony! But with whom? [Looks sideways at other person.] Excuse me. [Pokes sleeping neighbor.]

Spouse: *sknx— What? What?

Person: Pardon me, but have we been joined in holy matrimony?

Spouse: Have we? I don't know. I don't remember much of anything.

Person: Well, take a look at your hand.

[They do.]

Spouse: Crikey! It seems that we are!

Person: Are you a mefite?

Spouse: A what?

Person: Well, if we are to be wedded to one another, you can't very well not be a mefite. [Pulls out wallet.] All my credit cards are gone! I wonder if mathowie will take cash?

Spouse: [increasingly worried] What's a mefite?

Person: [continuing to rifle through wallet] Twenty dollars, same as in town.

Spouse: Why does it cost twenty dollars?

Person: Oh, no, it only costs five.

Spouse: [getting up from snowdrift and backing away] I am so confused.

Person: Never fear, I'm sure my eight spouses will be able to explain it to you.

Spouse: Your what? Oh my god, you're crazy.

[Spouse runs away.]

Person: [reaching after the quickly receding spouse] Wait! Wait! That's not what I mean! They're just mefi spouses! You're my only Ralph, I promise!

Four LOOONNNNG blocks. Across a(surprise) canal. Also, there were 2 ducks swimming in the canal IN THE BLIZZARD. WTF, ducks?

Sat at Canal Bar for 30 minutes. People there were having a leukemia fundraiser that no one wound up attending because of the snow. An entire table of raffle prizes. Also, no birthday seems to be happening.

I am sad I missed this. But being stuck at Marie's Crisis during a snowstorm wasn't so bad either. I'm afraid to look at that photo set... hehe.

I don't think I should drink anymore.

We all say that from time to time.

As far as New Year's, I just got slammed with work 6 in the morning till 9 in the evening the next few days, so I'll have litttle time to plan and prep. However, fiestycakes told a bunch of her pals and they seemed into it, so when cakes get back (Tuesday) I'll have a plan and I'll throw something up. Remember, this will be pre-, post- or plans fell thru, as i doubt i can fit all of NYC mefidom in this wee condo. I'd say 80% chance there will be a thing here that night.

Yeah, but I say it the day after every time I drink.

Dude, vrak? New thread now, please? Because I want to say that I'm in for NYE shenanigans because I don't have plans and love your parties.
