Are any mefites on Diaspora? I just got my invite and I see three other people there who are following #metafilter, but I bet there's more of you. I'd like to systematically add mefites as contacts, so if you are on there and want to be added, please either follow #metafilter, or contact me.

I signed up early before anything was working yet, got frustrated, then forgot about it completely...I'll go add #metafilter now!

I just got an invite but the signup screen is buggy and won't submit properly. I am a bit in shock right now over diaspora. One of the founders has just been found dead at 22

I did the same as kitarra. So many places now!

I got an invite the other day and signed up, but my usual username was taken and, yeah, so many places. I've added a #metafilter tag to my profile, but don't really see the point - I can't really see how this isn't just a duplication of G+ (or vice versa).

Yeah, it seems like it might just be a duplication of G+ (but with better privacy and security solutions), but I thought I'd get in early and get my username, in case it takes off later. If they end up integrating it with G+ and Facebook to the degree they suggested they will, I might end up making it my primary social network platform. At the moment I quite like the way it seems strangers are talking to each other (out of necessity, I guess). And I'm not having any problems with bugs (*touch wood*).

So how does this thing work? I just signed up at diasp.org (it shouldn't matter which site you sign up at, right?) and noticed that there was one whole post tagged #metafilter. Should I be seeing more?

username orzechod, following #metafilter (among others). Looks like D* can link up with your Facebook account too, so that's nice.

I decided to apply for an invite. It tells me "We'll send you your invitation as soon as we can, by the end of October at the latest." Either they mean 2012, or there's time travel involved.

I think that's just when people have posted things tagged with metafilter. But people can choose to "follow" #metafilter. I can see that list of people in the left hand column when I click on the tag. (But I can also see four posts tagged with metafilter, not just one). Some people have set their hashtag followings to private, I think, so there might be people following #metafilter who we can't see.

If you memail me your email address, I'll send you an invite today.

I am. You can find me here.

I internet-met (IRC, an aborted Skype session) Ilya a couple of times. he seemed like a nice kid.

I requested an invite in March. Have you lucky few who got invites been waiting for the better part of a year? Because it's annoying to get repeated requests to donate money to an organization that's been stringing me along for this long.
posted by nushustu at 8:11 PM on November 14, 2011

Yes, I only got mine yesterday and I requested it earlier than March, I think. And the repeated requests to donate pissed me off too.

I could sign up at diasp.org without needing an invite. This is me.

I put my name on the list in January. So far, nothing but donation requests.

Oh yeah, look at that! You just have click the "log in" link and that takes you to a page with an option to create an account. That's nice, and at the same time even more annoying.

Why...

So yeah, I'm signed up now. Growing pains aside, it really would be great to see this or something like it take off. I hope the remaining developers can weather this loss and that Ilya's legacy someday includes the successful wresting of social networking from the likes of Facebook.

I'm on a different server, same username, and have no idea how to follow #metafilter. My server (joindiaspora.com) seems to be down right now so I'll have to follow later.

I haven't signed up yet, but I like the idea of major web services like social networking developing distributed protocols like were developed for email. I really like the idea of someone making a great Facebook client so you don't have to deal with Facebook's constant changes, but Facebook's API is kind of patchy and quick to change last I checked.

I just joined as well, but am kind of confused by it at first glance. Let me know how to follow you and I will.
