Who tagged my post? I'm sure I didn't
Needed it. Without tags, what good is it? Either be thorough with your posts or stop posting. I'm tired of picking up your slack.

jessamyn did it. Why on earth do people seem to take offense at adding tags to improve the searchability of posts? Was there anything remotely offensive about jessamyn's tags?

why do people seem to take offense at those who ask questions in MeTa to improve the usability of the site?

I did it. When people don't tag posts sometimes Matt or I will add a tag or two to help other people find it so they can avoid double posts, group similar posts together etc. Is there a problem?

it's either me or jessamyn at the moment that add all tags besides the poster. You seemed upset and I didn't understand why.
Everyone seems kind of uptight in MetaTalk today (looking at other posts) so maybe I was projecting on you.

I didn't, seriously. I was just curious. when I'm upset, I make it clear by sprinkling my comments with keywords like "fascist", "vermin", "war criminal", etc.

Because it's something over which we have no control. More irritating is the fact that when tags are put on, the poster can not remove them. No everyone worships at the altar of tags.
Intermittent and arbitrary tagging of posts by the adminstators sucks. And that is what it is--intermittent and arbitary. It is not consistent. As such, it comes across as prissy plus it's a fool's errand. You both have more important things to do than play mother knows best on the odd post whenever the whim strikes you.
I will get around to putting tags on my posts at some point, I suppose, but until then I would like to have the option of removing the tags you guys put on if I don;t like them. If people are given the choice oof adding and inventing tags, the choice of the tags should be under the poster's control. Otherwise--as with the arbitrary editing--you put yourself back into the business of putting words in other people's mouths. That's not a very communitarian thing to do.

y2karl I hear what you say and know what you mean. But I think you look at it in the wrong way. They are merely search terms, they're not content. It's only about accessibility. They could just as easily be hidden in the posts but still be active in a search to make it possible for people to find the posts. And so what if they're indiscriminately and arbitrarily added - they don't detract from the posts - and the more tags (when they are useful/applicable) the merrier. None of this would cause a bother if people tagged their posts in the first place -- and some people do that so badly that arbitrary post-production tagging is really helpful.

I'm glad the tagless posts are getting tagged, they need it, we need it. I don't understand why so many posts are going up without any tags at all.
Tags make the world a much more ordered place and we could all use a little more order.
As an aside, what about a script that maybe scans the FPP to be posted and suggests possible tags? Maybe this should be in its own MeTa?
sonofsamiam, plausible deniability is one of my most favorite phrases and it would make a great name for a Ska band, I think.

I thought the point of tags was to allow the 'poster' to 'categorise' their submission, because tags are about the 'bottom-up' or 'distributed' organisation of information. If the admins start to tag posts then don't call it tags, call it a category.
Of course, this avenue is an anal interpretation of tags, and something the Tag Evangelists might agree with. Mmmaybe we need some kind of Lazy Sheep implementation for user accounts.
Oh, and Witty is still not Witty.
