Yahho buys upcoming.org October 5, 2005 6:13 AM   Subscribe

Yahoo acquires upcoming.org, and our very own waxpancake, (AKA Waxy). Blogger, Flickr, Upcoming.org... Metafilter has quite an impressive collection of alumni.

Seems like metafilter has a lot of 'up and comers' in their 20s or so. It's rather interesting.

As a side note, I know someone who is going to become a Spy with the CIA. Kinda freaked me out, but she's going to be getting a $35k signing bonus.

Blogger kids: evhead, megnut
Flickr kids: Ericost, Sylloge
Upcoming kids: Waxpancake, lhl

(I probably left some folks out. I think #1 worked for blogger for a bit, as did some other members, iirc.)

Upcoming.org is great...so congrats to the team!

Congrats! Wow, that was pretty fast. Best of luck, wax- I left HotJobs shortly before Yahoo bought them, and everyone there has nothing but good things to say about their new Overlords.

Either that, or back when there were only 14 websites, everyone signed up for everything.

My startup just got a round of funding too.. we're not quite at Yahoo! acquisition level yet, but that sort of thing is probably less than a year off due to our industry. :) Good one to Andy!

How much did Yahoo! pay for it? I assume it will be public information as Yahoo is a public cimpany.

Congrats! Gosh darnit, I must get think of the next big thing...

cell divide: I'm guessing that it's probably not material to Yahoo! due to size and won't be disclosed.

I hope Y! starts publicizing Upcoming. They haven't done much for Flickr, but those guys don't need it; Upcoming hasn't yet hit the threshold where it's popular enough to be really awesome.

Did Haughey do the design?
posted by The Jesse Helms at 12:27 PM on October 5, 2005

Nope, I did the original design. The terms of the acquisition (including $$) are private, which is common even for public companies. (Nobody knows how much Flickr got, for example.)

And for all you noobs, I still read Mefi actively and still maintain my Metafilter Stats page.

Thanks to everyone here. I love you guys. (Though why wasn't this posted in the blue?)

Congratulations, waxy. Just so long as this doesn't affect the quality of your very fine links.

Andy, did you get a carve out in your responsibilities and duties for maintaining Waxy Links at work? (Oh, come on, that's comedy gold right there!)

Thanks everyone for the well wishes. We're definitely looking forward to taking Upcoming.org to the next level. Like "cutting off heads ALL the time and not even thinking twice about it" next level.

Sadly, my schedule for chillin' on the blue is doing one of those Calculus "limit approaches zero" type things, but I'd like to think that I make my presence felt everytime someone forgets to close a tag. :)
