I go in occasionally. I talk to the bot. The bot is nice. After 40 minutes of screwing with an object running on 40 lines of code I leave.

Moz: can I stretch your already legendary patience and benevolence, in the name of "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out"?
What is irc.metafilter.com, port 6667, #mefi ? I'm a complete ignoramus and tried, a few days back, to log into a Yahoo discussion board you proposed(don't laugh at my Pooterish terminology)but found nothing. Why? Because I am an idiot. I am an idiot registered. At Yahoo, of all Gulliver's bloody Travels.

But I'm sure there are other idiots here, not as shameless as I, who would love to join but don't know how. Would you explain, please, as if to a 3-year old?

If you'll bear with me, I promise, in a year or two, to make actually helpful comments such as, to me fascinatingly mysterious I go in occasionally. I talk to the bot. The bot is nice. After 40 minutes of screwing with an object running on 40 lines of code I leave.

I won't ask what a bot is, Geoff, because that would be abusive.

oops, sorry miguel, i didn't come back to visit the thread right away. to connect to irc with windows, you can download the mIRC client; for more information, check out the irchelp site. we'll be there all the week, but we won't be as fun as that orgy in rio de janeiro.

I'm off then. Thanks, moz, I owe you!
How do you know it won't be as much fun as that orgy in Rio de Janeiro?
Bet it will.

*takes long, thick pencil from behind ear and proceeds to slowly write down "mIRC client" and "irchelp" on thick cardboard, preparing to become part of the modern world*

Nervously I typed in "irc.metafilter.com", expecting bliss. This is what I found. Is this what it's all about? Turlyming? What does it mean, Turlyming? Is this the hidden, secret MeFi gateway?

P.S. I'll turlyming a bit more until I find port 6667. Hope you enjoy this idiot's logbook.

Spirits up! Moving on from triumph to triumph, feel sure I'll get through eventually.

Spotted intriguing reference on sixdifferentway's good website.
I transcribe: "Blog IRC, Wednesdays 20h - ?, Host: turlyming.net, Port:6667, Room: #blogirc"
Discover crucial .net bit. Confirm port number; am reassured. Make note to send bottles of '67 Vintage Port to Moz and sixdifferentways.
No umbrage taken; at last.
Will be turlyminging my way back to you very shortly.

irc.metafilter.com points to irc.turlyming.net, which is the actual machine #mefi is hosted on. just type "/join #mefi" at the prompt when you connect to the server.
