So how's ColdFusion5, Matt? Curious because the last couple of days have been very slow, and I'm getting lots of timeouts.
Or is it that you've been in there tweaking stuff? Has there been another huge surge in traffic?

i almost wonder if we should not strip down some of the features of metafilter -- like sorting according to most comments, or whatever. or, if possible, if we could distribute some of that to the downloading computer rather than use the resources on the database server. (i wonder if XML could somehow be utilized for that...?)

A thought that maybe belongs in feature requests:
I know whenever I come to MeFi, the first thing I see is the front page sorted by Date. Then I immediately sort it to "Most Comments," to see what's hot. That's two queries. Is it at all possible to immediately go to a "view" we've set in our preferences? That might eliminate some of these extra queries.
I suppose we could all just bookmark index.cfm?sortby=mostcomments (or whatever) to do our part....

Yes, and in fact, MetaFilter already does this using a browser cookie.

My modem wishes you a life of pain and misery!
