Interesting article at the On-line Journalism review looking at how Slashdot's users turned to them when the news sites went down during the 9.11 crisis. Although Mefi's reaction has been examined elsewhere in depth, it's interesting to note here how a 'niche' site was able to cope with the demands of its users.

I never even bothered to turn on my Mac on 9/11. I knew it would be a hopeless cause to even attempt to access any news sites, so I just stayed in front of the TV all day.

Aaron's Undeniable Truth of the Net #1: When a major news story breaks, so will all major news sites. They will never be willing to spend the money to have enough server capacity on hand to insure they can't be caught off-guard.
