nice new interface, matt. (looks like the top menu still needs a bit of a tweak, but otherwise, it's terrific)

oops. maybe it needs to be previewed inline with other messages, as on mefi, to avoid double posts.

Yay! Looks good!

I'm working on the rest of the features, a custom # of days to show on this page, better posting/previewing page, and tracking your last metatalk visit with new/old comment indicators that truly work.

Yes. I like the new look. Thanks!

It's your birthday, but we get the present.
Thank you.

Here's an idea for a way to quickly scan the posts to determine which major category they are in. Still needs work (like smaller icons).

Here's what you need to do now.

1. I need an XML inteface.
2. I need XML-RPC. How can you release something like this and not provide some method by which I can post to meta-talk via my palm pilot 5000 running a WAP gateway mod I coded myself?
3. I don't like gray.
4. How long do we have to wait for multi-threaded? Slashdot has multi-threaded.
5. How come when I shut off cookies the site doesn't work for me? Fix it please.
6. How come it doesn't load when my computer is crashing?
7. Does this shirt make me look gay?

I like the teenie icon thingies! In fact, I just like everything today. Even Matt. Matt I like a lot.

Nah, this here's some threadin', completely different animal. Matt's long had categorisation around, it's just MetaFilter with the categories displayed.

I wonder if the footer may be a little more consistant with MeFi proper and the way the comments look if you do

For some reason I keep wondering who the hell called themself "MetaFilter Specific" :-)
posted by cCranium at 5:25 AM on October 11, 2001

I had it that way at first cC, though when I scan the headlines, I'm concerned about where they were posted, not necessarily who posted them. If I put them in that order, different width usernames put the category names all over the place.

This exercise shows me that simply adding categories to metafilter won't be easy to display. I'll have to resort to some sort of icon/label method that places like slashdot and plastic employ.

Yeah, I can definitely understand that concern. The current comment footers organisation is by no means bad, it's just going to take a couple of days to get used to.

And if you end up categorising metafilter proper as well, then the getting used to period will shorten anyway.

If all the front-page posts for MeFi and MeTa look the same, and all the comments for both look the same, then it won't be so much of an issue, really.

Personally I think the icons are a smidge too Fark, which isn't intended as a slight against Fark. For some reason it feels less like MeFi with the icons, but I fear change, and will continue wearing my bush.

Um, what icons? Seriously. I see no icons. Mom! they're hidin' the coons again!
posted by rodii at 12:05 PM on October 11, 2001

...for "coons" please read "icons" there. *sigh*
posted by rodii at 12:07 PM on October 11, 2001

cC, you're probably right. You've been doing this on 1142 for so long. I'll keep it user first, category second.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 12:10 PM on October 11, 2001

rodii: icons, although it looks like Matt's removed them there, also.

You've been doing this on 1142 for so long.

I would suggest that's the reason that I personally am taking a little big longer to adjust to categories first, rather than having given me any actual insight into useabillity. Seriously, it was just a suggestion, though now that you've made the change I must admit I do like it.
posted by cCranium at 12:22 PM on October 11, 2001

Maybe if Matt allowed us to define our own stylesheets for each individual category...

:)
posted by daveadams at 7:39 AM on October 12, 2001

cCranium first, usability second.

daveadams, you could always try tinted glasses.
posted by gleemax at 4:33 PM on October 12, 2001

Dave, that would lead to some kind of unholy mishmash of a visual design. Next you'll be suggesting that each *poster* could have a style. I think Jakob would agree that that way lies madness.
