Dialup and video don't mix; how about a warning? March 11, 2006 11:20 PM   Subscribe

It would be nice to have a warning about Google Video in front page links. Dial-up and video don't mix.

I wonder what stav thinks about Google Video.

Well, I can tell they're google video or YouTube in the mouse-over, but nonetheless I'm wondering if video links are a fad, or the way of the future.

To be fair, it's a flash.

If you use dial up you are part of the problem. Seriously. When they started paving roads do you think they put up signs warning the losers in horse-drawn carriages? Get off my goddamn lawn with your dial up. You're ruining the whole internet. Do you expect me to stay in the stone age with you luddites?

Your browser doesn't have a status bar? Weak, very weak.

I wonder what stav thinks about Google Video.

It's actually started to work in Korea, finally. And there was much rejoicing! (That said, Google/Youtube videos on the front page are still teh suck, mostly.)

I don't understand. phewbertie, does your browser not have a back button, stop button, status bar or mouse-over? I mean seriously...

Mouse-over. It's all about the mouse-over.

Google has video? Who knew...

Sorry, but aren't the actual video links a dead giveaway (e.g. video.google.com, youtube.com/watch, and so on)? Thus, I just ignore them (that means don't click for the uninitiated).

Laughing at xmutex too. Sure, I'm still using dial-up, but that's gold.

It would be nice if people would check what they're clicking on before they do it, especially if they're on dialup.

If we all had dial-up we wouldn't have crappy Google videos on the Front Page.

Hey, that's awesome. Congratulations! :)

I do think it's courteous to put a little parenthetical stating what's behind the click -- Google Video, .pdf, Java, .avi, anything that's not just Ye Olde HTML. Yeah, I know, mouseover, but still. It's a little courtesy that costs nothing to add to the post.

No one thinks, "Oh good, I'm about to make a bowel movement." They just do it.

How do you know what people think right before that blessed event?

If the suggestion is to include some label when posting streaming video, it's a fine suggestion and would be a courteous thing to do. I try to label links that contain any media type other than html, or a very large download.

Nothing wrong with adding streaming video to that list, since it WON'T WORK for a lot of people.

This is sensible advice. Half the state here has dial-up, I don't think it's that crazy to tell them what they're getting into. Or, what Omie said.

Google Video and YouTube both load some 2k SWF and then start downloading video, at which point you can surf away from the page or go get some breakfast and come back to watch the video. No harm done.

Now, if you're linking to a MOV or a dreaded PDF, which for many people is the death of their surfing session, please make a note of it.

As far as hotlinking to movies or pdfs, I use a firefox extension called TargetAlert which displays an icon indicating what type of file is being linked to. It doesn't help for google video (or youtube I think) because they are normal webpages with embedded video, not just a video file.

(It's slightly easier than just checking the statusbar because the icon will pop up next to the link itself, and can be set to appear permanently or on mouseover).

On behalf of everyone who lives where only dial-up is available, hey, watch yourself, xmutex, them's fightin' words. And what OmieWise said. ;)
