Interactive netvibes module August 8, 2006 7:58 PM Subscribe
I would love to see an interactive netvibes.com module (an interesting RSS aggregator/ web 2.0 start page). Something creative could definitely be created. Also it would be great to see a +Netvibes button http://eco.netvibes.com/button/ in the "Subscribe via RSS feeds:" button list.
Wow.. I've never seen netvibes before. I don't know what pwally is asking for, but netvibes... is... awesome...

I'm guessing that there has to be a "module" set up in order for a site to appear on netvibes, and there isn't one set up for MeFi?
If you look at "netvibes news" you'll see an item about them updating the module for Digg, so it seems like it has to happen at their end. Hmm. Why can't it just grab a feed and go with it like Bloglines does?

Sure, this is what netvibes calls their ecosystem in which developers can create modules for their start pages. Here is an example of an extension that shows IMDB quotes. The modules can be dynamic which is very cool. I'm not sure exactly what I would want to see in the module, maybe the ability to post links? Maybe to be able to listen to your playlist from music.metafilter?

Huh? We have RSS stuff. Why should metafilter buy into some dumb corporate system? What would netvibes provide that simple RSS would not?

Still no idea what their thing is supposed to do. Is it just a tag syntax to let you cleanly demarcate lists/grids/etc? Boring.

How did you find it? I looked around for quite a while.
I'm underwhelmed by it, and it's very much beta at the moment, I think. But as anyone can create a module, why not?

I use Netvibes as my homepage, and twiggy is right, you can just add any site's RSS feed. Click on the tab you want it on and click the "add content" link in the upper left. Your first choice is "Add my feed". The only MeFi site I have the feed for is Projects, though. The blue and the green move too fast, I just check them by going to the site.
As a side note, I really like Netvibes. I used to use a personalized Google homepage, but Netvibes beats them hands down for me.

Now that you've compared it to google homepage, I actually understand this "module" business. I don't really see why we need one though.

We don't need a module. Modules are comparable to gadgets on a Google homepage. If all a person wants is to see the latest N posts to MeFi or AskMe, that's just the RSS feed.

I think bloglines is an rss reader, right? I've never used it but I think you subscribe to different rss feeds?
I can describe it in relation to google homepage, which is similar to netvibes. The google homepage allows you to add rss feeds that all appear in little windows on the same page, just like an rss reader except on one page. It also allows you to add different "gadgets" to your custom homepage that allow you to access different websites in different ways. Like you could upload something to yousendit, post something to flickr, or search wikipedia, all without having to leave your custom homepage. Basically, these gadgets let you interact with different websites without having to leave your homepage.

Perhaps I should have used the term proprietary. But we have enough proprietary crap on the web these days. Open standards are better. And what's with the UTF-8 requirement? As long as the encoding is set right by the web server it shouldn't be too much of a problem.
