What if Matt has it backwards? Maybe people ought to get front-page posting priviledges first and discussion priviledges later. Is MeFi a community 'blog or a discussion board?

I think Matt has it right. There are certain traits that make a good front page post and to get an idea of what those traits are, beyond the guidelines, one must participate in Metafilter for a little while. posted by daveadams at 7:38 PM on November 1, 2001
But if Meafilter really is a web log, then they aren't participating until they post on the front page.
And I am not lobbying for a shorter interval between signing up and posting on the front page. posted by NortonDC at 7:43 PM on November 1, 2001

Okay, then let me restate. I don't think we should let new users "participate" (your word) by posting new front page links until they have proven their dedication by reading and commenting on other threads.
It's a community weblog, but that doesn't mean Matt has to let anyone do whatever they want with it. posted by daveadams at 7:49 PM on November 1, 2001
no, no,no. then youd get idiots like me messing things even more. The art is in the link. But i see your thinking(i think) the compliment to the art is the comment. posted by clavdivs at 7:09 AM on November 2, 2001
