Front page text gets narrower

It's kind of fun, watching the text on the front page get increasingly narrow, but it's just too much of a good thing.

What causes that, and how can I prevent me ever causing that?

Not sure what you mean, could you be more specific? Or post a screenshot?

After Wendell's "Happy Birthday Metafilter" post, the page indents another indent's worth. I can still post a screenshot if that's not clear, but basically the margins double after that post.
