i score a 3 -- i'm as shocked as you are.

If we allow for MeFi (and for self-links), I imagine most score a 2.
posted by Marquis at 10:07 PM on November 13, 2001

no no, you can't count mefi.
posted by moz at 10:16 PM on November 13, 2001

I think that your MeFi profile page should be considered a self-link and as such, not counted.
Yes, this is an attempt to *distance* myself as much as possible.

Here's a permanent link.

I have a 2, legitimately. (Kottke links to Zeldman, Zeldman links to webmutant.com on his Exit Gallery page.) What do I win?
posted by webmutant at 1:43 AM on November 14, 2001

Kottke links to X, X has a Google engine, Google links to...

Praise Kottke, from whom all blessings flow! Praise Him, all creatures here below! Praise Him above your own webhost! Praise Jason, Meg and even Matt!

Ahhhh-men!
posted by crunchland at 3:03 AM on November 14, 2001

Did this on my old blog a few months ago; I have multiple 2-hops from Kottke, and I've also made arrangements to be listed on his links sidebar around 2006 or so.
posted by hijinx at 6:00 AM on November 14, 2001

So are my 2 degrees of separation somehow less legitimate because I'm linked by a person listed in Kottke's "C-List"?
posted by jennak at 7:08 AM on November 14, 2001

Kottke . . .
links to Q Daily News (via Kottke's B-list) . . .
links to Cheesedip . . .
links to Hobbsblog II . . .
links to Sean Meade . . .
links to Respublica. . .
links to iceberg273.

Six degrees of Jason Kottke! (Of course, you actually have to click 7 times because of the B-list).

*ahem*

Some of us are just a little too cool for kottke.

Oh, who am I kidding? Link me, link me, dammit!

I'll wash your car!

Like, weekly!

*cries*

You can find your 'kottke-degrees' even faster by using A Picture of Weblogs, posted recently at MeFi by Arnab.

I'm a 2, via RC3.org. (Not that I care.)
posted by Steven Den Beste at 10:14 AM on November 14, 2001

icebert273, your list is one shorter -- RC3 to me to Sean.
posted by Steven Den Beste at 10:15 AM on November 14, 2001

Kottke to Ev to me, nothin' but net.

One thousand four hundred and eighty-three.

Why?

WELL WHY DON'T YOU JUST SLEEP WITH HIM?!?!

aww, he loves you guys, it's so cute....
posted by mattpfeff at 11:56 AM on November 14, 2001

I guess sleeping with him finally paid off!
posted by Kafkaesque at 12:19 PM on November 14, 2001

tamim gets a link and doesn't even have a blog? *sniffle*

I guess my consolation prize (for being a huge loser and missing out) is that I score a 2 now instead of 3. Oh, yay!
posted by lnicole at 12:26 PM on November 14, 2001

Does he link to a major search engine? I'd be a two then.
posted by starduck at 1:08 PM on November 14, 2001

Um, Kaf, wash your car for a week if you'll help me climb up to 2-dom. If you don't have a car, we can negotiate what I would wash.
posted by gleuschk at 1:16 PM on November 14, 2001

I can make anybody a 3, contact me to discuss terms.
posted by sudama at 2:54 PM on November 14, 2001

I hope this doesn't trash my chances at getting on the B-List.
posted by Su at 3:09 PM on November 14, 2001

much like dance dance revolution, i am sure that i would just embarass myself trying to play this game. i've got better chances being connected to kevin bacon.
posted by lotsofno at 3:20 PM on November 14, 2001

I was actually connected to Kevin Bacon for the first 8 months of my life, but was surgically detached in a revolutionary procedure using only a circular saw and good intentions.

To this day I can eat only Sizzlean for breakfast.
posted by Kafkaesque at 3:32 PM on November 14, 2001

I am also three degrees from Kevin Bacon. Please excuse me while I flee paparazzi.
posted by jessamyn at 3:50 PM on November 14, 2001

Damn, I've been fellating kottke for months now, and not so much as a link.
posted by mikewas at 4:06 PM on November 14, 2001

hey why link the cow when you can get the fellatio for free?
posted by Kafkaesque at 4:11 PM on November 14, 2001

I'm an undergrad underling for Blogdex, and I'm actually working on something like this. As we speak, I'm running a script over the list of all the links Blogdex has ever collected to see which blogs link to which blogs. It's a "dumb" first crack, because it doesn't take into account the regularity of the links (i.e., the links in the A-list on Kottke.org are not considered any different from a link he puts in a post), but it'd provide a rough sketch. Anyway, once that's done, I'd just have to run a breadth-first-search on those links to get your kottke distance, or your zeldman distance, or your little green footballs distance, or whatever. Maybe within the week?
posted by MonkeyMeat at 4:53 PM on November 14, 2001

So now it's one.

Goodness.

This Kottke fellow certainly has a lot of friends.
posted by Grangousier at 12:36 AM on November 15, 2001

By "friends", obviously, I meant "devoted and erudite readers".

Sorry.
posted by Grangousier at 1:38 AM on November 15, 2001

You MIT boys are always hoarding my good ideas. :) I guess my 6 degrees of kottke plan is moot if the BlogDex crew at the MIT media lab is on the case.

Damn you MonkeyBoy *shakes fist*

Ok, I'm over it. I'm just glad it's getting done.

Special K - If you link me, I'll hunt you down, cut your liver out, and eat it raw.

Honest.
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 8:26 AM on November 16, 2001

ah, stav, you're playing with fire. JK burned me (nicely played, btw, JK), he'll burn you too, but not when you expect it. He'll chuckle for a while at your attempt to lure him, and wait and watch. He'll plot, he'll connive. Then, when you're most exposed, he'll feint, he'll lunge -- a link, two links, a comment and a witty retort. Your most personal fears advertised to the world. Your server trembling under the weight. Your comment fields swelled to burst-point and your inbox deluged with desperate intreaties for more background on Bosco T and his Koffke Konnection.

And it will all have been for nothing, nothing I tell you. Because Koffke, you see, doesn't have a liver.

What's a "koffke"?
posted by Steven Den Beste at 11:08 AM on November 16, 2001

What's a "koffke"?

I know, damn, that was bad. There is a Coffee Connection or something somewhere and I had further confounded myself by earlier referring to him as 'JK'. Argh....

Come on guys... You're missing the obvious link

1. Kottke links to MetaFilter
2. MetaFilter has a link to my profile
3. My MeFi profile shows my webpage.

3!
