My, my...AskMe is mighty chatty today. If you can't answer the question, shut up.

Brazen and willful disregard for AskMe norms by multiple people in the same thread slowly erode the usefulness of AskMe.
posted by Falconetti at 9:56 PM on February 27, 2007

And if you can't link to examples, let alone using the handy-dandy flagging system in the first daggone place, why should I bother getting het up?
posted by Alvy Ampersand at 10:08 PM on February 27, 2007

jessamyn is on vacation for the next two weeks and I'm having trouble keeping up, trying to be everywhere at once, so yeah, ask mefi will probably be more chatty for the next couple weeks.

Stuff isn't getting flagged too much though, so I missed one of those threads completely.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 10:13 PM on February 27, 2007

Ahh, it is a tribute to jessamyn's good work that I noticed a significant degeneration in her absence. And Alvy, look at just about every answer in either thread for examples.
posted by Falconetti at 10:20 PM on February 27, 2007

(I removed 5-6 stupid jokes from both threads)

Flag more. The moving-on part is really good, but the flagging part is key.
posted by cortex at 10:44 PM on February 27, 2007

I flagged and I almost always just move on, but these examples were particularly egregious and some of the worst floutings I'd ever seen on AskMe. I didn't realize mathowie was shorthanded, or I likely would have let my pique subside before making this thread.

But yet, but yet, ook into the chaotic void that is what Metafilter becomes without administrative maintenance. Eternal vigilance is the price of utility.

I think you might need a temp jessamyn replacement while she's on holiday, Matt (not volunteering).

I'll volunteer stavros for the job. and/or bugbread.

The French headlight flash one was particularly bad - when I happened upon it, the ratio of bibble to answers was 5 to 1. It makes me wonder how many comments jessamyn delete's on a daily basis - I'd always assumed she did a bit of mild pruning of an afternoon, but now imagine she must be going days without sleep, popping uppers with one hand and feverishly clicking the delete button with the other, muttering arcane Librarian curses under her breath.

I anointed cortex yesterday, so he can edit/delete stuff like me and jessamyn from the flag queue. So I've got extra short-term help, but if people could keep flagging, that'd make our work easier.

Is good. (and cortex is totally teacher's pet, nyah nyah nyah thwack!)
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 5:54 AM on February 28, 2007

Ooh, cat-debagging. Yeah.

I'm treading gently into that editorial swamp, so askme may not but struppen as quick or a thoroughly out of the gate as we've become accustomed to. Pruning whole side-conversations is a heady, intoxicating notion and I'd hate to OD.

Also, man did this have me biting my tongue. Heh.

(Matt, I saw stavros smoking in the bathroom. Also, aren't we supposed to have a quiz today? Also, I got you this apple.)

The only question I have is:

mattex? or corhowie?

Will cortex keep his superpowers when jessamyn gets back? Then it would be matamyntex or jessacorhowie. I like the ring of that.
posted by grouse at 6:08 AM on February 28, 2007

thanks for this askme. i usually don't flag stuff too often, but i'll be better from now on.
posted by lester's sock puppet at 6:20 AM on February 28, 2007

So can Cortex put reasons he deleted stuff? Or does he have to do songs about them?
posted by wheelieman at 6:42 AM on February 28, 2007

Heh. I'm imagining some dystopian future-Mefi where every deleted post autoplays one of a selection of "reasons for deletions" songs, depending on the stated nuking impetus.
posted by cortex (staff) at 6:46 AM on February 28, 2007

That doesn't sound dystopian to me.

I was so annoyed by a random jokey comment last Friday that I im'd jessamyn about it. She took care of it right away.

There's been a lot of this going on in askme lately. I fully intend to be a good citizen and flag the shit out of the stuff that's too chatty.
posted by frecklefaerie at 7:00 AM on February 28, 2007

Me either. And you've already got "Dear Asshat"; you could just have that autoplay for all deletions.
posted by languagehat at 7:27 AM on February 28, 2007

jessamyn is on vacation for the next two weeks

Ha Ha! The cat is away motherfuckers! Jessamyn's superdeletionpowers have thwarted my thread-shitting for too long. With her out of the picture I am going to wreak havoc all over AskMe. Cortex will never be able to stop me! That stripling is weak in the ways of the anti-asshattery. His cute little songs won't help him now! [insert evil laugh and cat stroking].

Then it would be matamyntex or jessacorhowie.

jessamattex. And another vote for cortex's permanent elevation.

I'd go further and suggest half a dozen, with at least a couple from the Eurasiafristralian landmass (to take advantage of the time zone differences).

Jessamyn should be able to do a better job than ever from Australia, its timezone complementing America's. (Or do the US-based admins sleep on alternating shifts anyway? For my $5, I sure hope so.)

Also Alvy, snap!

Tell me about it. It gets even worse if you can't get on a regular plan and have to pay stupid prices like $20 an hour for casual wireless access.
