Mefi Music etiquette: would it be okay to post the album versions of demos I've already posted? [more inside]

I've posted a few tunes to Mefi Music in the past. They were acoustic demos that I recorded quickly in a dorm room with a cheap mic. Six months later I've finished an album which includes those songs and I will be releasing it soon. It was made in a professional recording studio and features a band and a small orchestra. Would be it cool to post the album versions? Or would that be like double posting?

Also, what about putting a "buy the album" link in the music thread? Appropriate?

For what its worth I think it would be cool just to see the progression from demo to studio version.

I am not as avid a mefi music reader as I should be, but I see no reason why new versions should be frowned upon.

I'll keep out of the "buy the album" link debate, though.

I don't have a problem with either. If I like a song, chances are I'll buy the album (hello scarring party).

Updated versions of demo tracks seem just fine. I've done it myself, I think. Doing it a lot with short turnaround time would be a little weird, but barring that it seems shrug-worthy, and I for one enjoy seeing progressive versions of recordings quite a bit.

'Buy the album' in the comments seems just fine too, especially so for folks who've put in some time on the site. We wouldn't blink at it in Projects, and as self-link philosophy goes Music is kind of a specialist subset of that.

I've bought at least two albums from folks who didn't provide an explicit link, so, hey!

Little as my vote counts, I say "Yes, but of course."

I'd say yeah, that's alright. I'd love to hear updated versions of the stuff you've already posted.

Would be a good idea to include a link to the demo in the comments as well, to make it easier to find the previous version.

Aye, IZ. Going both ways, even, if the Music thread is still open—and I get the feeling that Music has an unusually long shelf-life in that respect—people seem to pop into old threads now and then, and the content isn't as time-sensitive as posts elsewhere on mefi.

Fine? in your case it's not only fine, but long awaited. I'd love to hear the final version of Julia, for instance.

And IZ, a few people have done it already (myself included) and I think it's a really cool thing to do. Actually, some days ago I sent Matt an email asking if each song's page could be a little bit more to what cortex did in his Manifests page, where each song has the lyrics, space for commentary, the mp3 and a previous demo. I'd love to see something like that implemented here.

Please do post.

I need to get back into Music, it's been a while since I did much exploring over there. Or contributing, for that matter. But we're in the process of getting equipment together to do some garage recording, so I should have some stuff to share before too long. I'm counting on you all to help me learn to mix. :)

Don't forget to link to the old version, eh?

I say Hell yeah!

Alrighty, just wanted to make sure. Anyway, I'll be mastering and replicating this week, and then there will be posts. Cheers for the responses!
