Does the timing system take into account daylight savings? I just posted a comment and it's an hour out. I know DLS is odd internationally, but how does metafilter get its timezones? My account is (now) correctly identified in timezone/area, so I was just wondering how it all works. posted by Sparx at 7:39 AM on April 3, 2007
Sparx, go to your preferences page, and set your time offset. It will show the server's current time and you can adjust off that.
And yes, the servers move forward with daylight savings per the US guidelines, so if you're elsewhere in the world it may be out of sync for a few weeks. posted by mathowie at 7:46 AM on April 3, 2007
He should be ok now. The gap between the jump-ahead and the (old) normal DST has passed. posted by Dave Faris at 7:56 AM on April 3, 2007
Thanks No.1 - that did the trick (nice code by the the way). Apologies for the stupid question, but for years I'd not had my location shown and I wasn't au fait with how that kinda stuff worked. posted by Sparx at 7:56 AM on April 3, 2007

If you're in the Southern Hemisphere, MeFi time goes the wrong way on DST transitions. Once the dust settles, we end up two hours out of whack.
Matt, why do I have to set my own offset by hand, when my computer already knows what time zone I'm in? posted by flabdablet at 10:55 PM on April 3, 2007
