So, um, who sent out the mysterious "PLEASE ENJOY" MefiSwap CDs?
posted by goodnewsfortheinsane to MetaFilter-Related at 9:09 PM (59 comments total) 7 users marked this as a favorite

As of now, at least twelve people in eight different swapsets have mentioned receiving the anonymous "Please Enjoy" CD:

-Myself and jessamyn in Baroque, Julnyes in Pavane and Quadrivium;

-nanojath and arcticwoman in Jota;
-advil and chrismear in Etude;
-Amarynth in Neumes;
-edgeways in Octave;
-chos and Earbucket in Koto.

So, did Dreama send everyone a CD? This seems to be the most logical explanation, but then again mine was postmarked San Francisco, and Dreama's profile says she's in Pennsylvania. What gives?

I hope that nobody ever discovers the identity of the Poe Toaster.

Just sayin'. A little mystery keeps life fun.

True, but one can be curious, no?

(Plus, I wondered how one might procure the addresses for people not in their group; it just occurred to me that this is trivial with a simple substitution of part of any password. Not a biggie, but perhaps a concern for some people.)

Don't listen to it. It's like the video in The Ring, or the tape in Infinite Jest - it'll steal your soul.

Whoever you are, I know I've said it before, but: seriously, awesome mix.

I got one of those too, likewise postmarked San Francisco. (I was in the Gavotte & Homophony swapsets. ‘Please Enjoy?’—I did enjoy very much & would like to thank our anonymous benefactor.

I didn't get one. =o(
I was in Homophony and Intermezzo too. Did you get my mix, Rock Steady, misteraitch, sonofslim?

Being in two swapsets, it was very easy to figger the passwords to access the blog entries on bluesilver that contained other swappers' info.

Sorry to go on, but everyone who participated in the swap (who hasn't already) should go over to the MeFi Swap Sent & Received forum to report which mixes they've received. It helps sort out the moochers from the swappers for next time 'round.

Seriously, the Please Enjoy Mix is one of the best I've ever gotten. I've listened to it just about every day since I got it.

Whoever it is...thank you.

I'm often late but never a moocher. Lost some momentum due to family illness but mixes are almost done and will post this week. Sorry to the folks in my two groups.

Also, yes, thank you for the Please Enjoy mix. Most awesome indeed!

Carsonb, I did get yours and I meant to tell you I really liked it. Off to the swap forums to do so for real...

You just have to dig deeper into the mystery.

And you just have to learn to let go.

Just a note: This has been a great swap for me (swapset Baroque). Got CDs from jessamyn, goodnewsfortheinsane and asbestos mcpinto and they've all been GOOD. As in listen to several times good. As in rip to iTunes and put on the iPod for next week's 16 hou4 cardrive good. Add in the Please Enjoy mix and and things are rockin'.

goodnewsfortheinsane put together a professional looking package but jessamyn's handcrafted case just fit her theme perfectly, while asbestos mcpinto's handwriting should be made into a font it's so good looking.

thanks folks!

I received one copy of Please Enjoy as well - I was in two groups (Lieder and Koto).

I could not read the post mark, but the stamp is from the US.

My hunch is this CD was sent to returning swap members. If all of us 'Please Enjoy' recipients got together and pooled the names of the recipients of /our/ swap CDs over the years, we would suss out our mystery benefactor in one moment.

I still have the names and addresses of all the people that I sent my three CDs to. I participated in three swap rounds, two of these I was in two swapsets.

It's not that hard (but very generous!) to send a mystery CD to former swapmates - although my Canadian stamp would give me away in a moment.

So thank you mystery benefactor! I enjoyed your swap set very much.

My hunch is this CD was sent to returning swap members.

Nope, because my address has changed in the intervening years.

Walk away knowing there are people in the world who take the time and money and effort to give out free stuff just because.

I got it too (in Quadrivium or whatever it was called) and am not a returning swapper. It is pretty good and has been passed around my office .... po, I'll drop you a copy in the mail if you email me your address. Other than Please Enjoy I only got 2 CDs of five expected (thanks julnyes and phatlobley!) although received one polite "sorry I'll be late" email too.

Nope -- I got one and this was my first swap. Maybe it was just sent to the cool kids?

(And my name got on the list by accident?)

I posted this in the wrong thread: Wouldn't it be cool to start a Metafilter private torrent site? I mean CDs are so last century, and everyone here has good tastes ... I would be willing to help set it up, where I can. No transcodes!

Thanks for the public shaming. They're going out on Monday. New computer was required, and all that. I know. You'll believe it when you see it.

Not only does Please Enjoy totally rock, after reporting in a previous thread that my copy of Please Enjoy had arrived damaged, I came home this morning to find another copy of Please Enjoy waiting for me. Please Enjoy person, whoever you are, you are awesome.

Now if only any of the other discs from my swapset had arrived...

And I would really like it if someone could point me to a .tor of it.
email is username at gmail. I have a mixtape project via another site going on. When I get that one done (due in june) I'll up a .tor to anyone interested and put the info in my user profile.

I got one also and I've never done a swap before. Which is kind of nice since my set has turned out to be otherwise just a two person deal so far (me and chrismear).

I have a torrent client, but for me using it is akin to 10+ years ago when I first put that Prodigy disc into my computer and got all baffled. brainwidth hosted a digital swap a while back where we made available .zips of mixes. It didn't much take off, but maybe another try is in order?

Hey everybody, I'm tired of the mystery so I'll lay it down for you right here. I was sure somebody would've figured it out by now.

goodnewsfortheinsane told me he had this awesome plan to send out an awesome mix cd to everybody registered for the swap and then totally deny it was ever him. I can't even describe his plan to make it appear like the discs were sent from San Francisco, it's just too complex for a simpleton like myself.

He even said he would start a metatalk thread to throw suspicion off of himself.

I only got three mixes this time, including the Please Enjoy (I was in Lieder with seawallrunner). This saddens me because every other time I've swapped everyone sent out CDs.
posted by rhapsodie at 7:28 PM on May 19, 2007

advil and chrismear, you've got another disc coming from me yet at least (mea culpa).

rhapsodie....feel free to be temporarily disappointed in me, but do not be saddened. My mix is being sent Monday.

For what it's worth, I gave it an A. Well done, and thank you!

If it's dobbs, he's going to a great deal of trouble to postmark the disks from the States.
