Halifax NS meetup? September 13, 2007 3:21 PM Subscribe
Halifax NS meetup next week?
I'm going to be in Halifax and Antigonish on a work/play trip with my sister next week. I don't know if there's a critical mass of Halifax MeFites but Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday night (at this point) would be good for a get-together. We'll be staying downtown so anyplace walkable with decent food and drink would be great.

Apparently Nova Scotia is one of those places like Vermont and Maine that's not really, you know, real.

Damn, yeah, just one province away for me, too, and I have to work the next day. :(

I'm going to be in Halifax and Antigonish
Now there's a placename I never expected to run across in these parts. My mom grew up in the big green-and-yellow house with the gingerbread trim at the crest of the first hill on Hawthorne St.; say hey to my Uncle Ron if he's out on the porch. (My parents are next door but you can't see their porch from the street.)
If I was back home visiting, I'd gladly buy you a pint or two down at Pipers; as it is, if you have any questions at all about things to do in Antigonish and environs, my email's in my profile.
(Seriously anything. I know the town well enough that we refer to the Five-to-a-Dollar Store on Main Street as Jukes, because Mr and Mrs Jukes are the ones who own it. You want directions to the best swimming hole in the county, they're yours - though it's a bit cool for swimming this late in the season . . . you get my drift . . .)

Nope, Space Coyote - a Dartmouthian for now. Wasn't talking about the Span of Green Cables.

The customs agents in Halifax should have been the ones in charge on 9-11. I flew in from Newark the day after that Labor day with only 90 minutes to transfer to the last plane to PEI and nearly missed it because of the way they were going through my things.

Well this may be a bust then. I'll have to email people with Halifax coordinates them. gompa, I sent you an email with a few Antigonish questions.

You're gonna be in Antigonish? I'm from the 'nish! Alas I'm in Vancouver at the moment. HAVE SO MUCH FUN!! Antigonish is a beautiful lovely place. Pity you weren't there a month ago, I was working at the theatre on campus---pints would've been had. Let me know if you have any questions gompa can't answer.
Gompa, you didn't happen to write that article in the Westjet rag last month, did you? I'm pretty sure I know your Uncle Ron, ps.

I'm a shiny new member and also brand new to Halifax, but I love Metafilter and would love to meet up with you downtown! I know a few cool pubs, let me know if you're up for a drink with me and the hubby. :)

Wednesday would be the best day, actually... would that be good for you? Did you have any idea where you would like to go? I've been to the Economy Shoe Shop and it's great, lots of different beers on tap; Maxwell's Plum is also pretty great, but if I remember correctly further up the hill from the water!

I've never been there before either so if you have any suggestion that would be super. Shoe Shop sounds good, do they have food? Wednesday night is totally great for us.

They do have a full menu (a pretty tasty one at that; I had the mussels last time and they were awesome - and cheap!); I think it's the right choice, then! We're free anytime after 6-ish, so I'll leave the time up to you.

Yup, that was my piece. Mrs gompa did the pics. How do you know Ron?

Just in that sort of way that everybody in Antigonish knows everybody. I was pleased to note that one of the photos had a small Festival Antigonish Summer Theatre sign in it--if you're there next summer you should definitely go see a play or two. It was pretty weird to be getting on a plane to head back to school in Vancouver, whip out the free travel magazine only to find that my home town, the very place I'm leaving from, is on the cover as the place to be. :P Good article.

Andree, let's say 6:30 at the Economy Shoe Shop on Wednesday. I may email other MeFites if I find any that happen to be around there. I'll bring my sister, feel free to bring anyone you know who is around.

Indian Food was great Jessamyn. Lots of fun was had and sorry Andree couldn't make it.
I need to find myself in this place more often.
To Antigonishers: did you know the Kontak family? Cause I married one of them. :)
To Dartmouthians: sheesh. I know people who would rather travel 30 minutes to Sackville than spend 5 minutes to cross the bridge. As a fellow Dartmouthian, I can't understand it myself.
