Toronto meetup over the holidays?

Is anybody available on either saturday the 15th or sunday the 16th, or perhaps the following weekend, for a downtown-based Toronto meetup? Gandhi's seemed to work out well last time, and although there is only seating for perhaps 10 people in the whole place (14 if you really like each other), the area is full of pubs and other such viable meetup venues. I'm totally open to suggestions.

I must apologize for my poor co-ordination of the previous Toronto meetup at gandhi's; it was good food and good people, but there were only 3 of us. (No chagrin on maudlin and the dief, your presences were more than enough to make it good time regardless).

Also, if anybody is in to video games and controlled substances, a pilgrimage to funland arcade on yonge street isn't out of the question.

I can make it for the 15th, but the weekend after that I'll be heading to Ottawa. I'm thinking someplace with a little more room might be better, as larger meetups (like, any meetup with myself and/or DNAB) tend to be loud.

It's your meetup, Tehloki, you call it (try to pick someplace relatively central is my only request).

Gandhi's can be the jumping-off point to some roomier pubbery; I'll scout out some of the establishments in the area. I just really love Gandhi's, heh. If need be, a small group of mefites who want roti can go there first, and then head to a larger location for the "official" time.

Haha, I love your enthusiasm, John. Maybe you'll be able to test out the fiery power of a hot roti this time :P

Like the Sassy One, I can make it on the weekend of the the 15th, but the next weekend I will probably not be in town. That'll probably be the case for most people - the 22nd is just too close to Christmas.

And I looooove roti.

tehloki, IIRC, the dief has an asbestos mouth. You taunt him at your own risk.

The 15th works well for me. Roti (any heat), pubbing, and points beyond sounds good.

are you looking for a challenge???????????

I will freely admit to eating some of Hamilton's hottest wings, but really only to get the free stuff that came along with them. I'm really not that much of a thrill-seeker. I'm a librarian, dammit.

I should be fine for that weekend.

The problem I see with starting somewhere with a plan to eventually find somewhere else is that people come to meetups late. If you've moved on, they can't find you.

We actually already have a #mofirc (MoFi) meetup at my place arranged that weekend and I was going to ask if we could all meet you guys in Toronto that Saturday (15th, nighttime). So, yeah. Good timing!

I can't promise I'll be there but I will certainly try ~ barring the weather (anyone else get caught in a freak 10 minute blizzard today followed immediately by bright sunshine?).

Gandhi's.... mmmm.... yummy!

Meetup at the laundrymat! wooot

Jacquilynne makes a good point re: moving around. But damn, roti sounds good. And there's tons of bars/pubs in that area.

Also, properly speaking, it would be a MoFi vs MeCha battle royal, keeping things within the proper fighting class. Or maybe MoFi and Mecha will team up against Mefi. Terrifying thought.

The really, really terrifying thought would be to consider which side of that three-party battle royale I would come down on. Were I forced to take sides, that is. Possibly, I mean. Theoretically, purely hypothetically, in a strange alternate universe where I'd be in Toronto on, say, the weekend of December 15-16th, 2007, with plane tickets already in my inbox. I mean, if.

Did I mention terrifying?

Because Canadians love DaShiv.

Um, I don't think #mofirc has much of an affiliation at this point beyond the fact it started out of MoFi. We're sort of like a mongrel pirate ship... chat... thing. Maybe zombie... pirate... monkey... ninja. Yeah. Okay. Half of us are on MeFi anyway, that's the important part.

So, a few points I would've mentioned if I'd gotten to posting before tehloki did: DaShiv is coming to our meetup, hence, he's coming up to Toronto with us; there's six confirmed driving up so far so wherever you choose should have enough space; an ideal meetup time would be between say 8:30-11 PM and somewhere relatively mellow; somewhere easy to get to, we're driving from an hour away and I don't know Toronto well; and open invite to any K-W or general Southern Ontario MeFites, we're doing a house party weekend kind of thing and if you want to meet up with us outside of Toronto - MeFiMail me, or drop into #mofirc on SlashNET, say hi.

Would Sunday afternoon be compromise? Not too late on Sunday for the Monday day job people and not on Saturday for those not happy with that date.

I'm okay with either Saturday or Sunday. Combining multiple meetups like this sounds like a lot of fun. (And helps us shy people to blend in a little bit - more people to listen to. :)

posted by SassHat at 6:26 PM on November 28, 2007

I see a lot of "I prefer saturday" and, as Melinka says, the entire mofirc meetup happens to be in that camp, so I've decided to add the meetup to the sidebar for Saturday. If anybody is completely unable to make saturday night, but still wishes to have a micro-after-meetup at Gandhi's on Sunday afternoon, I'll probably still be downtown from the previous night, and I'm perfectly willing to head out again.

In the meantime, could any mefites who are currently local to Toronto (I live in Guelph ATM) scout out the bathurst/queen area for a suitable location for the main event? I wish I could do this myself, but University is lumping quite a bit on me these next few weeks, so I can't head back until the wednesday before the meetup.

5) oysters

7) oysters
8) stumbling distance to a truly fabulous martini bar (I can get us in if the owner remembers me...)
9) oysters

posted by tehloki at 4:12 AM on November 30, 2007

I'm agog already. At least, I think that's the right term.

tehloki, it's here on King near Spadina. (I had it mixed up with a hole in the wall place next to Smokeless Joe's on John.)

Rodney's looks very cool, but their menu -- except for the beer and mousse -- appears to be all seafood. If everyone here loves seafood, or just wants to drink (I'll probably be stuffed with roti), that's fine, but it does seem a bit limited.
posted by maudlin at 6:32 AM on November 30, 2007

Although I will not be there, I find Rodney's expensive. I went to someone's birthday there once and spend somewhere around $150 for two people. It's no Ghandi's.

posted by dirtynumbangelboy at 1:53 PM on November 30, 2007

No, "agog" was bang on, really. Without it, I probably would have been lost for words. For once. (Stop snickering!)

Something close to Rodney's sounds good, because as the night goes on, I may get up the nerve to go over and try my very first oyster. So Paddy's or anything else in the vicinity may work.

posted by jacquilynne at 9:08 PM on November 30, 2007

Saturday works for the out-of-towners, I think it's prob best. Rodneys doesn't work, although I do love the oysters... but expensive does not work for me. "Costs money" barely works for me.
posted by SassHat at 10:29 PM on November 30, 2007

I just looked at the rodney's website, and yes, it appears they serve exclusively seafood, and almost in the fancy-restaurant pricing tier as well. It looks like this isn't a good place to bring a large group for a couple of beers; a pub near Rodney's (a good location for those who crave oysters at any price) seems like a better idea.
posted by tehloki at 12:32 AM on December 1, 2007

- Sunday brunch option: Dakota’s bluegrass brunch with open bar

Personally, I'm willing to walk anywhere in the square bordered by Bathurst, Yonge, Bloor, and King, after going to Gandhi's on saturday. Any place in that general area is fine. I just like to go to Gandhi's as often as possible. It's like my little ritual.

We could decentralize the main meetup from the bathurst-queen area, and those willing to make the pilgrimage on foot (or by cab) to wherever the most reasonable place for the main meetup ends up being can do so with moi. Personally, I enjoy walking around downtown Toronto.

(Also, if we absolutely can't decide on anywhere in particular, Bistro on College is pretty good, with quite cheap beer and cheap food, and significantly less seedy than it used to be, now that they've started throwing out the heavily drunk and the 16-year-olds.)

i wish i could come, but i'll be out of town.
i will chime in that nirvana at college & bathurst is huge, will absolutely accomodate metafilter noise, and is rather new so it hasn't yet been swarmed by the rabble (i was there 2 weeks ago and it was only half-full). it has a large, eclectic menu featuring numerous vegetarian options, lots of pan-asian stuff, and a variety of soups, sandwiches, and bar food. roughly the same menu as the green & red rooms, but with a cleaner kitchen. and it's really cheap (full dinner & a beer for ~ $10). but of course, i'm not coming, so don't listen to me- just some advice from someone who's been there pretty recently.

Yeah, I'd still be into meeting at Gandhi's on the Sunday. As long as we get to make fun of The Dief's dirty knickers, of course. I've never met a prime minister (dead or alive) before, are we supposed to call him "His Honour" or something?

I do, however, drive. If they're close together (sub-10 minutes walking) I'd go to both almost for sure. Farther apart and it depends on the parking situation.

I like nirvana too, if only because of my fond memories of KOS (I never did figure out how to say it, kaos? K.O.S.?). I'm actually planning on going out to K-W to meet the Mofi's so I won't be at Gandhi's till Sunday.

To dief: why would I be disappointed in your knickers?

I really find Queen and Bathurst oppressively awful, and Gandhi Roti is just as bad. Must every single outing be west of Yonge St.?
posted by joeclark at 3:06 PM on December 5, 2007

DNAB, Gandhi's is unlicensed. Staggering off to a bar afterwards -- or before -- is still an option.

Jacquilynne, Gandhi's is at Bathurst and Queen and Nirvana is at Bathurst and College. Less than 2 minutes driving according to Google, but I'd consider it a relatively short walk.

saucysault, I'll modify the next list to add you to Sunday only.

Joe, suggest something else and I'll add it to the next list, but as we haven't heard from you so far, yeah, the list of suggestions has been pretty west-centric.

I think the plan sounds good as follows: Saturday night, meet up early at Ghandi's for Roti, say 7:00? Then everyone just going to the bar can meet at 8:00? And then if we haven't tired of each other enough, or if there are enough non-Saturday folks interested, we could meet up for brunch/coffee/hangover avoidance on Sunday?

So, Gandhi's people meet at 7 (address is 554 queen street w if it's not in the read already) and everybody else meet the gandhi's people at Nirvana at 8.

I'll try and arrive at Gandhi's early, and stake out a table with a HURF DURF BUTTER CHICKEN sign.

Nirvana is a restaurant, or a pub? Or both? Are we having dinner there then, or is the reservation just to be sure they've got enough tables/space for us?

It's a licensed restaurant. Those who want to eat, can eat; those who want to drink, can drink. We're talking about reservations just to make sure there's space.

DNAB, you'll go wherever tehloki's pants go on Sunday? Got it.

I'll call Nirvana tomorrow and ask them to hold for 25 and let them know that number may vary a bit. The idea is just to make sure they know a large group is coming in. If we get more people (You reading this? Interested? Come on in!) we'll just steal chairs.

Updated list coming tomorrow night. I know several people still aren't sure if they are coming to Sunday bruncheroti (err, which will it be?), but if we know where and when in advance, people can drop in.

If open bar means what DNAB thinks it means, Dakota's is probably the most awesome choice. If not, I'd probably be going to Gandhi's regardless of where Sunday brunch is, so... yeah.

Also evstar is definitely coming to the main meetup even if I have to kidnap him, so put him down as definite in the next update.

Reviews of Dakotas suggest that 'open bar' means 'the bar is available despite it being noon on a Sunday' and not 'the bar is included in the price of your $12 all-you-can-eat breakfast'. It still sounds like hella fun, but perhaps not the sort of place a large group can just walk into and expect to get seated together? I'd still be up for trying it.

posted by tehloki at 6:35 PM on December 13, 2007

I'll revise evstar and add dobbs (and his cocoa butter) for Nirvana to the next update, which ain't going out until Saturday morning. Obviously, people can still drop in, as there's plenty of room in the reservation, so I hope no one's thinking of the updates as some kind of exclusive guest list.

It sounds as if people want Dakota's on Sunday, which has some kind of bar, although I doubt that it's OPEN open, like wedding reception open. (Hey, I was just echoing what SassHat wrote. Maybe she has her own definition of open.)

Are we committing to Dakota's? 1 PM Sunday? I don't think we'll need reservations for up to 10 or so people, but as long as we all know where to go and when, we should be fine. And the dief won't need to do that forlorn thing.
posted by maudlin at 7:01 PM on December 13, 2007

Dudes. There's a winter storm warning for our region on Saturday night. We may not be making it out to Toronto in that case. Although I'm wondering how long it lasts; we could possibly do the Sunday brunch instead. It'd be a pity to have DaShiv all the way out here and not get him up to Toronto. Stay tuned, I guess!

Also, EXPEDITION FORCE = awesome.
posted by Melinika at 9:04 AM on December 14, 2007

Hmmm. We're talking we could possibly come up tonight instead of tomorrow night. This storm tomorrow night is supposed to be pretty bad, I don't think people are going to want to come out for Saturday night... what do you all think of doing the meetup tonight instead?
posted by Melinika at 9:13 AM on December 14, 2007

I have other plans tonight, though I suppose the meetup will go late enough that I could probably do both.
posted by jacquilynne at 9:19 AM on December 14, 2007

If this is the only way Expedition Force can make it, we should be able to get at least a few locals out at a pub starting at, say, 8 PM. And if the roti lovers have the time, we can still try that at Gandhi's for 7 tonight, or some other time this weekend.

Can we have a roll call to see who is interested in:

1) Roti at Gandhi's tonight at 7?

2) Nirvana's tonight starting at 8?

3) Anything else any other time this weekend?

Me: I'm in for roti and Nirvana tonight, and anything else people want to do on Saturday or Sunday.

The Environment Canada Storm Watch for Toronto. Shitty for anyone travelling into Toronto, but those of us in town should still be able get around, so, really, I am not giving up on Saturday or Sunday. I truly believe that beer and roti can stave off frostbite.

I think the drinks plan should be contingent on the K-W peeps' travels. If they can only come out tonight, I would rather go out tonight. Storms are serious business, although overall Saturday night works better for me, I'm totally flexible as I live downtown and do not have to negotiate a car through that mess.

So - how about: drinks tonight (or Saturday), Ghandi's on Sunday afternoon in place of brunch, and Ghandi's before drinks if people are really feeling hardcore about it?

Dakota's is not "open" bar as in free, more like open as in they serve booze on Sunday morning. It's not a huge place so the seating could be tricky - they do a few small tables and a couple big long "family style" tables, so it would be luck of the draw. It's near the Dundas streetcar, but I have no idea what that line looks like these days (ie have they finished work on it yet?). I say, scrap Dakotas altogether for those reasons, also it's pricey and after all the outings this weekend I'll likely be tapped out by Sunday.

Let's see what we can salvage here. Here's what I suggest:

1) TONIGHT: Nirvana starting at 9 PM (not 8 PM). This gives time for travelling and for getting word to Toronto people who still haven't checked in to the thread. K-W people can roll in around 9:30-ish and should find a table ready with at least 4 T.O. people. I just confirmed reservations for 20 people at 9 PM. (Hey, I'm an optimist.)

- So far, we have 7-9 from K-W, plus SassHat, saucysault, jacquilynne (arriving late), Chuckles and me (that's 12-14).
- Phire, rocket88, dr. moot and the dief are definitely NOT coming tonight.
- Fingers are crossed for tehloki, orange swan, dirtynumbangelboy, melissa, Evstar, adrianhon and girlfriend, and GuyZero (I MeFi mailed him even though he wasn't on the list).

I'm bringing my Blackberry with me and the email or MeFi mail links.

NIRVANA, 434 College St. just east of Bathurst. Google map. Open till 2 AM. Web link says cash only, but they do take credit cards.

Aaaand -- we have one diehard willing to go for roti before Nirvana (maybe 8 PM instead of 7 PM?). I'm there, too. Anyone else?

2) SUNDAY, roti at Gandhi's for all who missed out tonight and for roti addicts. The roti must roll!

It was a totally awesome meetup weekend. Huge thanks to tehloki for starting the ball rolling and to everyone who came out. Those of you we missed are strongly urged to show up next time or else we'll send the dief to grunt at you in his most masculine way.
