Mexico City meetup. ¿Les parece?

Having recovered from the maratón Guadalupe-Reyes and an all-around hectic February, I'd like to propose a get-together this month just 'cause I think it would be fun to meet capitalino and fellow expat MexFites. From an earlier chat with another MexFite, it seems weekday evenings work best. How about sometime in the next two weeks? I suggest Condesa or Roma, since it seems a bunch of us live there, though I could be talked into hoofing it out to the Centro for the right venue.

One good, cheap option in the Condesa is Don Keso at the corner of Amsterdam and Parras.

I will be there from April 1-5 and was going to suggest a meetup myself. If it can happen in that time frame, that'd be great.

Heh, I like your title.

It's nice to know about a possible Mexico meetup. Too bad I'm in Monterrey.

Nimodo...

Not up for an 11-hour bus ride?
posted by donpedro at 12:13 PM on March 8, 2008

Oh, and I'm cool with April 1-5 range.

Bueno...mira...I'm traveling in much of March, but I'd be down for early April as well. I live in Roma, but Condesa is walking distance, so i'm all for it. Don Keso sounds good, I haven't been there yet. There are a few good places in Roma, but Condesa might be more central for most people.

The nights of the 2nd, 3rd or 4th would be my preference. The night of the 1st is a possibility, though that's the day I get in and I might be a little mareado.

Any location is fine by me.

Be sure to toast a glass to the folks up North, okay?

I'm up here in Queretaro, but I'd love to do a meetup. I could only do it over the weekend, though, so maybe that wouldn't work. But if I can't do this one, definitely keep me in mind for the next!

If y'all are doing it April 1 - 5, I vote for the 4th or 5th (viernes y sabado).

But then again, I'll probably be somewhat broke after semana santa, so if it's better for y'all to do it another night, it would probably be better for me to not take the bus to and from mexico for the weekend.

In other words, whatever y'all decide, and I'll make this comment so that I can keep an eye on this in my recent activity in case I'll actually be able to make it : )

Sounds to me like April 4 would be the best to accommodate veggieboy, lovejones and mosessis, and date should work for me as well. Any other takers?

April 4th in Don Keso is perfect for me.

I'd really really love to be there. I miss Mexico City.

Also, I'm a bit busy that weekend moving stuff from San Francisco to London...

Too bad, vacapinta :( I was hoping you'd visit Mexico around that time. ¡Suerte con la mudanza!

Out of towners: check vacapinta's Mexico City trip report.

I'm up for one in Monterrey.

Shall we stick it in the sidebar then for April 4?
posted by veggieboy at 7:31 AM on March 11, 2008

Yeah, sounds like we have consensus for April 4 at Don Keso, in the Condesa. Corner of Amsterdam and Parras. Here's a map. It's at bottom left, sandwiched between the green blocks -- Parque Mexico and Parque España -- and a block south of Sonora. Shall we say 8 p.m.? Space shouldn't be a problem but I'll either talk to the owner or try to get there a little early to get a good table on the sidewalk.

Sidebarring now.

Excellent. 8pm. Thanks for the map.

Received confirmation that I don't have to work that night, so all systems go. Will be back in touch as the date approaches. Cheers all.

April 4th seems fine to me too (I know I'm late to the thread, sorry), I'm close to there, so I'll see you guys then.

I've asked for the weekend off, so looking forward to seeing you all!

Also, can someone who knows the area / lives there swap mobile phone numbers with me in case I get lost? Please mefi mail or email if you're willing.

Hey glad you folks'll make it. (mosessis -- check your MeMail.)

I will really, really, really try to make it, but the imminent birth of my son may interfere with my plans. I'll keep you guys posted.

Got the next day off work, so I'm definitely in. Very excited. Thanks so much to donpedro for organising this! I'm excited to meet everyone.

I was looking at hostels, and it looks like there's one a few blocks away (near Obregon and Insurgentes), but it got kind of bad reviews on hostelworld. Anyone know anything about Hostel Home there in Roma?
posted by mosessis at 8:51 PM on March 28, 2008

Well if the map isn't lying, it's certainly close. I'll try to walk by there in the next couple of days on my way to/from work and poke my head in, make sure it's not a total armpit.
posted by donpedro at 1:13 AM on March 29, 2008

donpedro, i'll be in D.F. for a few days and I'd love to stop by. Is it set for Don Keso's at 8pm? How would I be able to find people?
posted by waylaid at 10:44 AM on March 29, 2008

waylaid - ask around the different groups in the bar for the amigos de matt haughey : )

also, i'll try to bring a sign.
posted by mosessis at 2:40 PM on March 29, 2008

waylaid, I'll try to wear my MetaFilter t-shirt. That should help a little. (Although I do like the thought of asking around for friends of el Sr. Jaui.)

Can someone recommend an online callejero/metro trip planner so I can make my way there?
posted by veggieboy at 3:18 PM on March 29, 2008

I don't know of an online trip planner, but if you're coming by metro, the closest stop is Sevilla station on the pink (#1) line. Route map. Exit the station and you'll be on Chapultepec Ave. Walk a half-block east to Salamanca, another major thoroughfare, and turn right (south, with the flow of one-way traffic). Go straight for a few blocks and you'll get into the Condesa. It's a little hard to describe what to do once you pass Oaxaca, so you should just follow this map from Guia Roji -- considered the gold standard for getting around Mexico City -- to get to Amsterdam and Parras, between the two parks.

Don Keso is a small joint, so it shouldn't be difficult to find the group. I've already talked to the folks there about reserving one of the few outdoor tables; just need to stop by in the coming days to remind them and say we'll be about six. I plan to get there early-ish to facilitate our space.

I'm tall with glasses, and an obvious gringo. Will try to wear an orange T-shirt with the logo of Gallo, Guatemala's finest lager. This is not an homage to MeFi's "bucket of cocks" injoke, it's just the brightest-color thing I own.

So good to meet all of you! I'm really glad this worked out. As the bearer of the camera, I realize it falls to me to post the photos somewhere. I've got a layover tomorrow, so hopefully I can get it done then. (Otherwise, it might have to wait till after my birthday Sunday!)

Pedro could have arranged his friends at Don Keso to sing you "the mañanitas", veggieboy. Feliz cumpleaños!

Super nice to meet you all. Let me know when the next one is...

Also, I'll get the couple pictures I took uploaded Sunday night after I get home.

And Happy Birthday, veggieboy! y buen viaje.

Oh, my head.

I'm still hungover and having to get up at 06:30 did not help matters one bit. Also, I had to go to a full-on Mexican christening at noon, with fourteen thousand little kids running and yelling all around me. A difficult day, to say the least.

Still, it was definitely worth it! Fantastic people all and I had a great time. Feliz cumpleaños, veggieboy!

Echoing all above, had a great time, nice to have met all of you.

Cobalt, hope all goes well with the birth of your child...and feliz cumpleaños, VG.

Yes, definitely Las Luchas next time. I heard all about "the mole man" when I got home. My girlfriend was a little freaked out. I've gotta see this...

thanks all - i had a great, great time and i just got back to the States. i'm especially impressed with Cobalt's ability to make it up so early!

Hell, I would've sung it myself! Glad you made it back home safe, waylaid. And I owe you an email veggieboy. Thanks for letting me pick your brain about Argentina.

Waylaid: There's really nothing to be impressed about on my side. My two-year old daughter fell on me like a sack of cement at that hour, ready to have breakfast and put on some music and dance a bit and run around and check on the plants and brush the cat and dance some more... I was too busy to feel sorry for myself : )

That sounds like fun. I'm glad your baby didn't arrive that night, I was afraid I had jinxed you!

The christening sounds awful, though.
