If you're using a DVI connection, every few months you should unplug it from your computer, put the plug up to your mouth (put your t-shirt over it first) and blow out the dust. It's kinda like the old NES cartridges, but when you get a bunch of dust in a DVI cable, you can get color shifts.

I think this is nvidia specific; there was some mumbling on Slashdot about it, I think, a firmware hack if your browser is out of date. Matt's on a Mac with a different chipset, IIRC, so whatever this exploit is may not affect him. So Safari is good for something, I guess.

There's no Make It Start link, but you can remove the "STOPIT" cookie by hand to start it. So that and blowing on your DVI cable should take care of it.

Refresh helps, but not if you're halfway down a long thread. And then the fix is clicking on a comment time stamp and refreshing. It's still a pain in the ass and I think it's basically an f-u to the users.
When I hit refresh, it just refreshes it at the same point on the page that I'm already at.

googly: do you mean why is TPS' profile pink? It always has been, users used to have the option of modding their profile with custom css. It got taken away after some exploits were discovered or something, but pre-existing css remains until the user edits their profile. TPS (alone?) has held out!

Then I refreshed it, and now it's back to being the same kind of slate grey.
"There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling the transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image; make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to the Outer Limits."posted by quin at 8:44 AM on April 1, 2008

I'm certain beyond a doubt that you made the right choice.
If only because you know that I know where you live, and that you know that I have orbital weapons platforms - and I know you know that I'm saving them for the NKOTB reunion.
Also, while slightly overkill for a rickroll, deorbiting a railcar-sized slug tungsten on mathowie would wipe out most of my immediate family, along with most of the Portland Metro area. If required, I am willing to pay a price.

If you are finding the xdperience too intense, a simple remedy is large doses of sugar and vitamin C. Also, keep telling yourself "It is just a drug. It will go away in time, the world is still absolutely normal, it is just my perception of it that has changed."
You can also often convert a bad trip into a good one by forcing yourself to laugh. Just saying "ha. ha. ha," even though nothing at all is funny, can often induce a giggle fit that will get you back onto the happy path.
Good luck, happy tripping.

My reaction was just the opposite, as I thought I'd finally have an excuse to buy a new monitor that uses less power and weighs less than a metric tonne. This monitor I'm looking at, it is not quite new anymore, and it occasionally shorts out a bit making alarming zapping noises, but I'm reluctant to replace it until it actually stops working. it'll probably last another decade, good old DEC.

How was anyone fooled by this? The sidebar and title bar don't change colors.
Trust me, I got emails.

I only seemed to get a few colors. After the day (24-hour period, beginning when mathowie woke up on the west coast?) is over, can there be a recap and a "Make It Start!" option to see the ones we missed?

Duh. It took a while to kick in so most of us who got fooled (*shakes fist at mathowie, sets reminder to avoid MeFi on April 1, 2009*) were deep in a thread as it started to happen - i.e., no sidebar and title bar down here.

This was honestly one of the most well-conceived and -executed online AFD pranks I've seen. Most of them are just har-har Yahoo PantsChangr-type stuff, but this one actually got me. I was mid-way through getting a screenshot ready to post to Flickr when I realized I really needed to check MeTa first. Such is the depth of my st00pit.

I was thinking on the train this morning "wonder what will be happening on MeFi today - I must remember not to get taken in", pleased with myself that I remembered that it is April Fool's Day in the centre of the MeFiVerse today, despite the civilised world having got over all that yesterday. Damned if I didn't get taken in, though.

I totally bought it. I sent jessamyn an email. I did not think to check MetaTalk. This was a great April Fool.

As this is apparently the correct thread to post this: annoying; not funny; went on way too long.

I got the light blue Mefi page and thought "Ha! Not sucked in for a change!" and then came here and got annoyed because my monitor was evidently broken.

No AmbroseChapel, this was the correct thread to read to find out how to stop it as soon as you wanted to.

Once again, because this point clearly hasn't been made enough, there are two Meta threads. One is clearly about the annoying background colours and one isn't. The conviction of some people around here that I went to the wrong thread and have only myself to blame is quite baffling.

You actually just used a colon and two semi-colons in a single sentence, didn't you? I suppose that's technically correct, but Gods, why!? Do you hate English, or something?
What's wrong with a comma, boy? Hm? Why not start her off with a nice comma? You don't have to go leaping straight for the semi-colon like a bull at a gate. Give her a comma!.

There's a way to Make It Start all over again at the bottom of the page.

If matt were to implement an "I hate pranks" checkbox on the user preferences page, and code the site to suppress any cuteness for users who'd checked it, I wonder how many of the complainers would check it, and leave it checked throughout April Fools day, and never check metatalk to see what they were missing. I'd bet not many.

Anyone, in either thread, who mentioned that they didn't like it got a personal message from me telling them how to turn it off if they weren't replied-to directly in-thread. I'm sincerely sorry I was in "we've mentioned this already" fatigue by the time you hit the second Meta thread, AC.

240 comments in this thread about yesterday's 4-1 joke. Is it time to look for a long boat? 16038v2?

I think you should modify the javascript to make this happen all the time but only if you are logged in under the username "AmbroseChapel". That would be cool.

I know I've been on Metafilter / Ask / MeTa too long when the background colour makes it illegible to read.
Yet sometimes I just refresh the page, and keep reading.
I think I'll leave this "timer" function on for a few weeks, just because.
