May (we) Meetup in Melbourne? May 1, 2008 3:55 PM   Subscribe

May (we) meetup in Melbourne?

I'll be in Melbourne, Australia for a few days near the end of May, and I have a free Saturday night (May 24th). I'd love to spend some socially enjoyable time with Melburnians and others (if applicable)! I'm staying in the CBD near Flinders St. Station, but I'm willing to travel (public transport).

I've chosen the date, but I'll leave the suggestion of suitable venues to the locals.

Any excuse for a beer.

I'm, in.

I also enjoy beer and live in Melbourne. Let's do it.

Possibly. I'll mention it to some others.

Plenty of good locations - not going to risk my cool reputation (ha ha) by recommending one.

Mais oui.

(not that i'll be there; i just had to say that)

The YMCA is near there.

We could take in a lecture then home in time for an early night.

I enjoy beer and used to live in Melbourne.

I enjoy Melbourne and live in beer.

It's not nearly as much fun as you might think.

The 24th is pretty much the only option for me.

I think I can make that!
posted by tomble at 7:18 PM on May 4, 2008

I'm up for that...

So, where's it to be then? I'm pretty clueless as far as central Melbourne goes, any of you cool young locals care to suggest a relatively quiet venue with the requisite level of sophistication?

Assuming that the radio silence currently being experienced is simply a pause for due consideration rather than a collective "nah bro", I'll take this opportunity to point out that anything anywhere on the 86 tram line would be SWEET by me. Sweet.

won't that be kinda dangerous after a few drinks?

Propose tiny Hell's Kitchen - not far from Flinders Street station

Centre Place. Off Flinders Lane between Swanston and Elizabeth - above a tiny cafe called Jungle Juice.

-- OR --

So perhaps Order of Melbourne, opp Storey Hall, RMIT, Swanston St. More space for wild gesticulation.

Look for big red door and walk up three flights of stairs.

How about The Workshop? Though I've only ever been there on a Friday night.

Looks intriguing wilful.

No in order for me to get there I need to lie to the wife. What time are we planning so that I can be walking the dog, buying milk, staring in a porno etc...

arvo? evening? initapplette - what works for you? workshop is 10 minutes on the tram from Flinders St. station.

russm: initapplette said night.

Workshop looks interesting. Anytime is OK by me, I'm usually finished work by 5pm on a Saturday. Yippeeee.

I won't say I used my mouth to throw any liquids on anything but UbuRovias' comment was some good funny.

Hi everyone, I'm in Australia already! Sorry for my delayed response; I just got email access today.

Workshop sounds terrific! Thanks for choosing something near the station; anytime in the evening works for me.

Liquorice, I'm sorry my choice of date doesn't work for you. Clearly, it's my loss. ;-)

workshop - damn you melbournites, with your bars that don't suck hitler's balls!
posted by UbuRoivas at 10:06 PM on May 10, 2008

well I've got no-one to make excuses to and nowhere better to be that evening, so anytime works for me... but to keep the ball rolling, how's 5:30 suit folks?
posted by russm at 10:09 PM on May 12, 2008

UbuRoivas - they're around, but like all Melbourne bars you just have to know which alley they're down... (does King St. count as an alley?)
posted by russm at 10:11 PM on May 12, 2008

russm: 5.30 suits me fine, nothing like getting a headstart on the late-starters. Remind me to set my alarm so I can be up in time, though.

BTW I believe UbuRoivas was trying to make the point that Sydney sucks repugnant organs with respect to drinking venues, in stark contrast to Melbourne's super-cool-bar-filled awesomeness.
posted by nomis at 10:45 PM on May 12, 2008

nomis has it. unfortunately, any bar in sydney that's even half-nice automatically attracts crowds of the worst kinds of wankers, earning it that dreaded adjective, "exclusive".
posted by UbuRoivas at 12:02 AM on May 13, 2008

Hooray!

I shall aim to be there around kick off.
posted by goshling at 10:44 PM on May 13, 2008

Reckon I'll prop up an end of the bar if I get time off for good behaviour from the ball and chain.
posted by wilful at 12:43 AM on May 14, 2008

Sounds like a goer!

damn you Melbournites

Melburnian, if you please.

Though since your support of the southerly meet-ups appears ubu-quitous, I am inclined to let you off.

Just popping in again here ... I've been traveling around a bit without email access.

5:30 sounds great; see you all there!
posted by initapplette at 1:51 AM on May 17, 2008

Wow, I'm so glad I checked Metatalk today, especially after I couldn't make the last meetup - if I can get away from work in time (likely) I will see you all there :-)
posted by sleep_walker at 3:07 PM on May 22, 2008

OK, see you at the workshop, sometime after 5.30 tomorrow. Someone bring a camera, I guess.
