LA October meetup? September 17, 2008 10:44 AM   Subscribe

I'll be in LA between October 9 to 16 and I'd like to get together. I won't be free the 9th and 11th, but the other days up to the 15th are good.

Los Angeles is a big city. Any idea what part of LA you're thinking would be ideal for your meetup?

The last time I was here we had Ethiopian on Fairfax. I'm staying in Sherman Oaks this time, but I'm renting a car and can go anywhere: over the hill, Pasadena, Santa Monica......I'd like it again to be at a place which serves food.

Casa Bianca Pizza or the Sportsmen's Lodge are my first two picks.
posted by brujita at 2:06 PM on September 19, 2008

Casa Bianca has a limit of 16, so I'm calling Sportsmen's Lodge at 7 on October 14th. If anyone has another suggestion, I'm welcome to it.

Uh, there's a bug which isn't letting me add this to the meetup sidebar....

I'm a big fan of the Sportsmen's Lodge, but you'll probably see a better turn out if you do it on a weekend. I think JussTuss plays on Fridays, which is an added, er, bonus.

I'm going to a wedding on the 11th and my uncle is having a break-the-fast for Yom Kippur on the 9th, which are the reason why those days are out.
posted by brujita at 9:30 PM on September 21, 2008

Oops. I got the impression from your post that the 9th and 11th were out but not the 10th. My bad.
posted by katillathehun at 9:54 PM on September 21, 2008

I can do the 10th if that's what everyone prefers, but I'll have been running around all day getting last-minute stuff done.
posted by brujita at 10:39 PM on September 21, 2008

I live right up the street from the Lodge and it's great, so I'm pretty much fine for whenever, though I don't imagine there would be much turnout for a weeknight 818 meetup.

Are there Valley snobs here? I was raised in 91607. ;-P

I remember about 12 or so showed up during the middle of the week last time I was here and I'd love to see everyone again.

I'm down for whatever, whenever!

Hmmmm...seems like there are valley snobs everywhere.

Again, calling the 14th....if that's not convenient for some, the next time I'm in town (which might be in a few months; there's an upcoming exhibit at LACMA I'd like to see) I'll plan for a weekend.

Being there for JussTuss is sort of a MeFi meetup tradition, but then I am a sentimental fool.

I'm not a Valley snob, I think the non-valley areas are nice too.
posted by mullingitover at 5:32 PM on September 24, 2008

Oh and I'm also a short bike ride away from the Sportsmen's Lodge. I'm down for the cause pretty much any time.

The 14th is perfect for me. How about 7pm?
posted by Ambrosia Voyeur at 9:40 AM on September 25, 2008

Oh, yes. 7. My psychic powers don't adequately cover for my inability to read a whole thread.

Will we need to make a reservation or can we just walk in?
posted by brujita at 5:18 AM on October 1, 2008

I wish I could make it, but I just can't make it. Ambrosia Voyeur will have to represent me. Dammit, why haven't I built that telepresence robot yet? It would pay for itself in bar-drink avoidance.

Reservations are not necessary. I will try to make it depending on how late my Tuesday night class runs and how much energy I have remaining.

We will see what the budget says when we get a bit closer.

Oh just come! I'll buy you a beer and share my cheese fries if that's what it takes.

Thin Lizzy and I would love to make it, but we'll be in Big Sur. Have fun.

I've never been to the Sportsmen's Lodge, what with it being in the Valley and all. I live like two minutes from the other end of Laurel Canyon. How bad will the traffic on Laurel Canyon be that close to rush hour? I usually try to time trips over the hills well away from congestion.
posted by Justinian at 5:30 PM on October 12, 2008

It's not bad. 20 minutes is a reasonable estimate.
posted by mullingitover at 7:24 PM on October 13, 2008

Looks like I'm going to have to skip this one. I've got too much to do before I go out of town for the weekend. But take pictures, people! You heard me!

It will probably take about 35-50 minutes.
posted by dhammond at 11:25 PM on October 13, 2008

So I was hoping to make this, but I have a crapload of work to get done because I'm heading out of town later in the week. I will probably be at work until at least 8 tonight, so regretfully, I'll have to pass :-(

Have fun at the Lodge...I'm sure y'all will have a good time!
posted by dhammond at 4:55 PM on October 14, 2008

Had vague thoughts of it, but srsly, my new work schedule basically kills weeknights for me if it's not on the west side.

I got here in 25 minutes from USC. It's a charmed life. Hey look, Twain's! I ate and promptly unate eggs benedict there once.
posted by Ambrosia Voyeur at 6:54 PM on October 14, 2008

so I'm here and yet los: the restaurant is closed and for cocktails I was directed to the pool bar... I'm in the hotel lobby, classing it up.
posted by Ambrosia Voyeur at 7:02 PM on October 14, 2008

Oh, crap! I just got here too and found out. I'll wait in the lobby for about half an hour and put my cell number in my profile.

PLEASE NOTE:

This is not a smart phone; I can only be called and texted.

I have long curly hair and am wearing a purple shirt , black denim jacket and navy pants.

Sorry - I just barely got home and am not making it back out again. Hope everyone was able to meet up!
posted by Space Kitty at 8:02 PM on October 14, 2008

DAMN! I went too. Asked around and was told you guys might be at the pool bar so I walked back to it. I saw a few people sitting there and a few in the restaurant, but didn't recognize anyone and it was kind of dark and... uhhh... I didn't want to just walk up to total strangers and say, "Uhhh hiii. I'm uhhh, miss lynnster. Do you know me? Noooo?" Leastwise not without a drink in me first. :)

Anyhow, I wasn't sure what to do and I live pretty close so I just went home. Bummer! :(

Sorry I couldn't make it--the person who was supposed to come look at my apartment at 8 ended up flaking because there is only one bathroom in this two bedroom apartment. Eh, what can you do?
posted by mandymanwasregistered at 8:49 PM on October 14, 2008

Damn indeed. We canvassed random strangers to see if they were from Metafilter, but they just looked at us like we were cult members. Brujita, J and I were in the diner hoping that some peeps would find us, but to no avail. Finally DaShiv rolled in as Brujita and I were about to leave, and we ended up staying out and going to Jerry's Deli for booze and mozzarella sticks.

Do-over, anyone?
posted by mullingitover at 12:15 AM on October 15, 2008

Darnit! I peeped into the restaurant but just wasn't confident enough to go in there. DaShiv must've not shown up yet 'cuz I would've definitely recognized him.

A do-over is definitely requested. Can we still have it on this side of the hill?

Fine with me! I hear North Hollywood is a cool place...

Yrrr, miss lynnster! Sorry for the mix-up. Ambrosia Voyeur must have been walking out while I was making my last post in the business center. I caught up with mullingitover and jmhodges, we looked and couldn't find anyone in the pool bar, then got settled in the coffee shop. I went back to the restaurant and asked the hostess to let anyone who showed up know where we were...but it must have been after you left.

Do-over, yes! I want to come see the Hearst exhibit at LACMA when it opens in a few months.

Wonderful to meet jmhodges and see mullingitover and DaShiv again! Pictures to come when I get home.
