Hong Kong Meet-up?

I am in town from December 2 - 17th. Anyone up for a good meal, or dim sum or something else? (Not anything else. I meant anything else moderately-priced. Hee.) I am busy 6-7th but the rest is kind of open!

oh, lord. i'd love to do this. my 12-hour overnights in hong kong (to & from mainland china) a decade ago only left me wanting to see more of the city. i wonder if i can justify a ... $1,470 not bad at all, really!... round trip ticket & expenses for an unplanned vacation? i mean, meet-up.

I'd love to do it too. I've been watching a lot of Hong Kong movies lately, and you know that feeling you get when you've got large chunks of a city in your head, but you don't know whether your psychic geography matches the literal geography?

When that happens, you can only cure it by a visit to the place. £388 return, inc. tax via KLM... that sounds startlingly reasonable.

Must hide credit card. Must start watching Hollywood movies. Must not go to Hong Kong for Xmas, despite my overwhelming desire to spend Xmas in non-Xtian countries...

Regret to inform that Xmas is all the rage in China.

I'm not going to Hong Kong, you guys have way too many dudes in cheap black suits running around having gunfights. I'm not going to get my head blown of by some fella doing a slow-motion backflip in midair!

Speaking as one of the aforementioned black-suited backflippers, I think a meetup is definitely in order. I have three suggestions:

1. Food at the Boston and drinks at the Pawn, perhaps on a Thursday evening
2. Wednesday night meetup at Happy Valley for horse racing and big beers
3. If a bunch of people make good on their threats to come over, and we have more than 10 or so folks, we should rent the antique tram. It's BYO, and a pretty fun way to kill a couple hours on a cool night.

I'll tell you what, I'm going to stick Wednesday, December 10 on the sidebar. This is tentatively a Happy Valley meetup. Beer! Gambling! Roast duck legs! Small men in colorful garb!

But enough about my apartment. If people feel like something else, fine by me.

I'm traversing through HK for a bit before I settle in Vietnam to conduct research there for a bit. Put me down as a maybe and I'll see what my schedule looks like.

HK'ers, I'd give 40,000 Mao Bucks to be there watching beer drinking people watch horses. GO.

Did anyone here see the sky last night? Unreal.

Here's what I think, if anyone is still following this thread: We meet at the Pawn at 6:30 or 7. Have an opening drink, maybe some fries with that goose liver mayo that they do. Then we hop the ding-ding and cruise over to Happy Valley, whereupon we throw money away on pitchers of Tiger and horses named Double Surprise. How's that for a slice of fried gold?

Also, Typewriter, if you want to get a yum cha or something while you're here, let me know. I work in Central and know a couple of good places.

First race starts at 6:15pm (I think) usually, and sometimes if you leave it a bit later you can't get a good spot in the beer garden (i.e. with a table to rest your beers on while you scribble furiously on the betting slips)...

I'm embarrassed because I started this damn thread and then disappeared! (Well, I was in Africa.) Right now, I am up to my eyeballs in family invites (comes with parents with seven siblings each.) I hope to make it to Pawn at least if not Happy Valley if I have to do dinner with more relatives. (Anyway, the way I would bet would be like, "oh, that horse is cute" and "that name is funny" and "that jockey looks sad.")

The way I bet your system sounds much better than mine. Form guide be damned.

Argh. My sister is taking me to see a panda lecture tomorrow night. (Really.) It is at 7pm. Yes, I am passing on meeting mefites to go to a panda lecture. I know, sad. But, y'know, there might be photos of pandas. (In my defense, I do have to do some panda research for an upcoming project.)

Sadly, this is not the first time I've been stood up for pandas. Anyone else plan on coming down? If not, let's call it and meet after the spring thaw.

The pandas are at Pacific Place, Admiralty, 5/F, 7pm. A Royal Geographic Society lecture thing. I dunno. I have no other info. I was just told to show up by my sister. Sorry milquetoast!

Fucking Pandas.

Actually, it was a lecture about non-fucking pandas who were traumatized after the earthquake. I guess, they were pretty non-fucking before the earthquake too! ;)

To traumatized for sex? If it wasn't for a group of visually obsessed apes, them pandas would have died off a long time ago. More animals should take the evolutionary initiative to be cute. In 2000 years' time, they will be living, breathing hello kitties with no genitalia.

And maybe come in miniature and not defecate either! (Fingers crossed!)
