It's not public, though. Only the person who had a deleted post sees it. We were having complaints about posts "disappearing" from the front page, so we leave them up for the author to find easily.

There is no public shaming initiative. People can see their own deleted posts that remain on the front page.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 8:08 AM on January 30, 2009

Yeah, it's just you. We had a lot of people, mostly newer users, who didn't always know what the heck was going on with their deleted post because they just couldn't find it, so now folks can find 'em themselves easily.

Just want to register my opposition to the new Public Shaming Initiative where people missed the announcement about the new deleted post display protocol and end up outing themselves in a MeTa post and getting dissed by ColdChef. That shit is mean.

On a serious note, do you get a Mefi mail when a post gets deleted? Does it highlight the fact that the deleted post does not appear on the front page for everyone?
posted by nanojath at 8:54 AM on January 30, 2009

MeTa was misleading, so we didn't get the flametastic pony. I think I'll have some comfort bacon.

Speaking of public shaming, when I was in fifth grade I was walking down Houston st with some of my friends and this one kid took it upon himself to pants me and I wasn't wearing any underwear (it was the early 80's yo, shit was kinda strange). That was shameful, but mainly because I was wearing red sweat pants with racing stripes and they weren't gathered at the ankle, so they were all swishy and bell-bottomy, I must have looked like a valiumed out suburban housewife from New Mexico. That was the real shame, what the fuck man?

I redeemed myself later that year by wearing red plastic cowboy boots, dope Wranglers and a button that said "Long Live Chairman Mao" in my class picture. Highs and lows my friends, highs and lows.

I'm torn about installing the Visible Deleted Posts script. In the one hand, it's funny to see the deletion reasons and the comments that managed to get in before the lock. On the other hand, I can do that via the deletedposts blog.

Also, I think deleted posts should not only remain on the front page, with the deletion reason visible to everyone, but the font of the FPP should be bold and blinking. Maybe with a pair of Drudge sirens at either end. In case anyone missed.
