I'll be in town from the 18th-23rd for SXSW and could possibly attend a meetup then.
posted by ludwig_van at 7:30 PM on February 10, 2009

Of March, that is.
posted by ludwig_van at 7:30 PM on February 10, 2009

There's often an Austin meetup in March, but it's usually during SXSW Interactive, not Music. I live here, though, so I'm theoretically up for either one.
posted by bluishorange at 8:04 PM on February 10, 2009

I'm down with Feb, for sure - after the 20th would work out best, if at all possible. March would depend on where/when precisely & expected cost.

Unavailable in Feb: 14th, 19th, 20th, 24th
March unavailable dates: 19th-22nd.

The rest are tantalisingly open.

We're crazy busy during the music portion of SXSW (March 18-22) and we're out of town for North Texas Irish Festival the first weekend in March (March 6-8). Otherwise, we're pretty available.

Yes, we did move here for the music. Why do you ask?
posted by immlass at 10:24 PM on February 10, 2009

Yeah, maybe we could have one on the last day of Interactive, just before music starts, then a different one for all us locals some other time.

I'm in town for SXSW Interactive (March 12-18).
posted by dw at 8:34 AM on February 11, 2009

I'm game. I'm not doing anything SXSW-related, and my schedule is pretty clear.
posted by adamrice at 9:15 AM on February 11, 2009

I'll be there this weekend. I know that's short notice, but if anyone's down for the 15th (which is a Sunday, and probably the only night I can sneak away), I'm way down.
posted by solipsophistocracy at 10:49 AM on February 11, 2009

I can continue my personal trend of only going to meetups far far away from where I live. (IE, I'll be at SXSWi, 3/12-18.) I had fun last year, would love to do it again.
posted by epersonae at 12:55 PM on February 11, 2009

Hey! Yeah. You folks rocked last time. I'm in, schedule allowing.
posted by fnord at 2:54 PM on February 11, 2009

I'll actually be down from dallas on March 6th and 7th, helping someone move stuff. SO if anything were to happen that weekend, it would be quite wonderful.
posted by grandsham at 5:35 PM on February 11, 2009

I live about 2 hrs away from Austin, so honestly I'm only likely to make one meetup in the coming weeks, though folks closer in might be up for a drink with out-of-town guests. Furthermore, since this is my first year in Central Texas, and the idea of catching a day of SXSW appeals mightily -- if tickets are still available, and within the price range of a mere mortal. If there's usually a meetup during the festival, how's that gone down before?
posted by woodway at 6:05 AM on February 12, 2009

How about March 15?
posted by mattbucher at 8:38 AM on February 12, 2009

Beware the Ides of March! (Actually, that should work for me.)
posted by woodway at 4:30 PM on February 12, 2009

Works.
posted by Pants! at 10:27 PM on February 12, 2009

Sounds good. I think we should meet somewhere near downtown so that the SXSW-ers don't have to go too far. Opal's again? Or Mother Egan's?
posted by bluishorange at 6:46 AM on February 13, 2009

If we're going for the 15th, know that I'm running a Core Conversation from 3:30-4:30pm on the web in higher education. And I think that's the night for AvalonStar bowling, if anyone's into the drinking-and-bowling-but-mostly-drinking scene.
posted by dw at 11:04 AM on February 13, 2009

I can do the 15th. I'd be interested in checking out Mother Egan's, if it won't be overrun.

For those who still want to hang out but the 15th doesn't work for you: we can hook up another get-together that fits your schedule better, too. And, if you're just randomly going to be in town and would like to get social, I'm easily contactable in a variety of ways (see user profile) and love the opportunity to visit with folks.

Jessamyn's panel is Sunday afternoon as well.

I'm in! I'm going to be working about 2 hours from Austin, and I don't know a soul in the town where I'll be living, so it'll be lovely to meet some nice metafilter folks.

I would like to go.

Man, I don't check MeTa often enough. The 15th sounds perfect, and we'll definitely try to be there.
posted by malthas at 10:34 AM on February 15, 2009

Wherever there is, that is.
posted by malthas at 10:35 AM on February 15, 2009

Oh yeah, just a quick note: Opal Divine's (the Freehouse, on 6th, where we had the November meetup) is now doing a Pub Quiz type thing on Sundays at 7. I don't know if that would be good or bad for a meetup, especially since the max group size is six, but I thought the information might be useful in determining a location.

I'm done now.
posted by malthas at 10:42 AM on February 15, 2009

So it looks like we've picked a date and a venue, sort of (Mother Egan's and Opal Divines are right across the street from each other anyhow).

Time? Jessamyn is on a panel 3:30 to 4:30 and dw has blocked that out as well. I propose well before or shortly after.

How does noon sound?
posted by adamrice at 11:05 AM on February 16, 2009

Wouldn't later in the day be more beeriffic?
posted by popechunk at 5:15 PM on February 16, 2009

Opal Divine's/Mother Egan's are a bit of a schlep from the ACC for a noontime meetup. I vote for 6:30.

Wow, the Sunday schedule is chock-full of awesome IMO.

Hmm. I'm torn. On the one hand is my son and his birthday party. On the other, MetaFilter meetup!

Well, Milo is just going to have to turn two again NEXT year.

Arrgh. Looks like I need to plan a higher ed meetup for 3/15 early evening, too. Any way we could move up or back a day? Or later in the evening?

I can be there for noonish or 6:30 or later or Saturday evening. I'm easy, just not cheap.

I'll be in Austin that weekend, but I have tickets for Spamalot on the 15th. However, if anything is still going on afters, I'd love to come. Or if we schedule it for Saturday the 14th, that would rock too. :)
posted by dejah420 at 7:46 AM on February 21, 2009

I'll actually come to this one. I was in a weird mood last year, and the whole SXSW thing gets all up in my grill, but I gotta put my money where my mouth is, one of these days.

Also: I have cameras.

I believe that works for me. I'm coming in from Dallas that day, but assuming SxSW traffic doesn't back up all the way, I should be there with bells on.

Well...probably not bells. Heh.

I'm with woodway's plan. Only question: since it's 3/14, does Mother Egan's serve pie?

I should be there with Mr. immlass.

Only if you bring me some Okie stuff, ormondsacker. I have enough Cain's chili powder to last me for the next couple years, though, and Griffin's syrup won't survive the plane flight back, and pecans are out of season. I'll think of something.

my piece of paper says that we were me, dw, Devils Rancher, fontophilic, malthas, Pants!, katemonster, adamrice, philosophistry, jubos (sp?), fnord, woodway, ormondsacker, mattbucher and epersonae. My apologies if I missed anyone. So nice to have pie on Pi Day with geeks. I have finally warmed up.

I had fun. Who didn't sign the paper that was there? Come on...
posted by Pants! at 11:03 PM on March 14, 2009

Had a great time, despite the cold. Sat next to DW for a while, who caused me to realize I'm just not an expert at anything (through no fault of his own -- it was just an epiphany) and fontophilic & malthas, who semed to forbear my diatribes quite politely. Jessamyn is every bit as fun, outgoing and energetic as she comes off being in the Podcasts. Meeting you all was a delight.

What was with the cold-coffee-waitress, though? Sheesh.
posted by Devils Rancher at 6:31 AM on March 15, 2009

for those who came along to Katz's, here's the answer to how the f--- you fry butter.

and I had a a fantastic time, despite freezing out on the patio. great to meet/re-meet people! (I had a mefi dream this morning, too: jessamyn & pb were trying to explain that my living room wasn't properly set up as an office, and in particular they really wanted me to put up some corkboard.)
posted by epersonae at 6:49 AM on March 15, 2009

Sorry, all, about the unheated patio and rather abysmal service. I have a different definition of "we'll be ready for you!" than what turned out to be the reality. Had a great time all the same, and I'm looking forward to the next one... at a different venue.
posted by woodway at 7:11 AM on March 15, 2009

I'm just not an expert at anything

At the very least, you're an expert at taking cold coffee and bad service with grace and aplomb. Oh yeah, and you seem to be an expert on printing!

I have a different definition of "we'll be ready for you!" than what turned out to be the reality.

Yeah, I'm not totally sure how "we'll be ready for you!" turned out to be "um haha there are so many people I get confused easily omglol!" on an unheated patio. I had a lot of fun, as I've always had at meetups, but definitely a different venue next time.

Great to see you all and to meet all the people in town for SXSW! Good luck on your panels jessamyn and dw and anyone else I might not have talked to who's on one.
posted by malthas at 11:51 AM on March 15, 2009

The patio part may have been my fault partially. The bar was noisy and sort of crowded and where I'm from 50 isn't that cold so "hey let's move outside" seemed like a sensible plan. And it was for a few hours, but not for a few more hours after that. Katz's was an inspired choice.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 12:02 PM on March 15, 2009

For those who were partaking of the restaurant conversation, it appears that Malaga is still open but moved to a new larger location on 2d St., and Artz has reopened after a brief closure. My fears have been allayed.

I was there but not on the piece of paper. So much for going incognito. Nice to meet you all. The service was so minimal, I didn't realize there was wait service. But at least there were fried pickles later on, so by my calculations, we wound up ahead.

Oh please. This from a guy who went on for quite a while about screenprinting T-shirts, something I know next to nothing about.

Also, thank you to ormondsacker for the pecan toffee, blackberry sage jam, and jerky, all from our shared home state of Oklahoma.

My talk went well. No idea how jessamyn's went, since I was pretty tipsy at the Fray and forgot to ask, then totally spaced on her continual "I'm not doing anything, just let me know if you wanna do lunch" requests.
