Cortex, Chicago, and Cheezborgers, October 2nd and 3rd September 9, 2009 10:40 AM   Subscribe

As promised: the First Annual Chicago Cortex Convergence, October 2nd and 3rd. Mark it on your calendars, kids.

Cortex is crashing at our place for the weekend, so Friday October 2nd will be a mini-crawl up in Andersonville hitting (in part) Hopleaf, Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, and Cafe Bong. The afternoon of Saturday October 3rd will take us downtown to Millennium Park, the Goat, and possibly Rossi's. Suggestions for other places to hit in and around those areas are welcome.

Green With You, if you're willing to be a little creative, you can find extremely free parking. For instance, if you swing by my neck of the woods (By the Montrose Brown Line stop) there are a kerschmillion free parking spaces on Ravenswood Ave, and you're a shortish walk from Andersonville. I bet there's an equally viable option somewhere closer too.

Normally one must stand in line for Too Much Light, as they do not take reservations. However, I work there, and because we have a group I may be able to swing us an exception.

A headcount by September 25th would be brilliant.

cittehkitteh: So is TML an improv group of some kind, cause I would be quite prepared for that eventuality.

Only sort of. TMLMTBGB is an audience-participation dramatic theater experiment, where the performers have 30 brief scripted plays and 60 minutes in which to perform them-- the plays are numbered, and the audience is given a menu of the plays, and at the conclusion of each play the audience shouts of which one they want to see next. At the end of the show, the Neo-Futurists discard a certain number of that evening's plays from their repertoire forever and have to write new ones for the next performance. So no two shows are ever alike, but it isn't really improv either.

posted by eriko at 7:40 AM on September 18, 2009

An early heads-up for those attending Too Much Light (26 so far!): even I with all my powers cannot break the no-reservations rule, so we will need to get in line at the theater at 10-10:30ish. Doors then open at 11, show is at 11:30. You will need $15 in cash, in case you roll high.

I'm performing in the primetime show prior to TML, so I'll meet everyone at the Hopleaf around 9:30 and help herd cats when the time is appropriate.
posted by lholladay at 8:25 AM on September 18, 2009

I'm definitely going to be at Hopleaf, but $15 is, like, a bottle of Sweet Tea Vodka and a carton of lemonade, or 1.5 packs of cigarettes, or 6 train rides plus a fancy new art pen. So my unemployed ass is going to skip TML.

Not that anyone cares, but I will be able to say YOU WERE FOREWARNED if anyone tries to convince me otherwise. I've spent a lot of time at parties and shows lately weakly arguing why I need to go home at two in the morning ,and I've found I'm a total sucker for a convincing argument or a free drink or someone alleging that in fact, I am a blue-haired little grandmother in disguise.

I hereby recommend Edgewater Lounge or something other than Hopleaf for Friday night. Hopleaf just Does Not Work for large groups of people, or medium groups of people, or really anyone after about 630pm especially on a Friday. As much as I love the Montreal brisket at Hopleaf, it is just too pricey for this kind of meetup, IMO. If we could get table(s). Which we couldn't.

Another thought is T's, although I haven't been there in ages so I don't know if it gets more crowded these days.

Fireside is another possibility, if slightly more difficult to get to.

If people don't mind not being around the block from TML, there's always Moody's. (Ever sat *inside* there? It's gloomy and awesome.)

To end my grumpy post with a final dose of pessimism, the balloon sounds fun but rain is in the forecast for this weekend.

Right, it's time to use the power of the Intarwebs!!!

It's obvious that this whole din of shig is going to be random and chaotic. Other than the drinking, that'll be specific and chaotic.

Thusly. I've created a twitter account.

And then I created one for all of us. Everyone watch mefichi. Anyone needed to stick news up can memail me for the super sekrit password, or just use something like "we need more beer", but without spaces.

Basically, let those who are one with The Drunkening post drivel and misdirection, to lead those who would like to be one with The Drunkening to the wrong, or right, place. Depending.

(you can read that as "I forgot about # syntax" of course.)

But seriously -- one problem I've found with the #tag is that you end up with thirty or forty of them at a large event. I gave up trying to follow them at VMWorld this year.

@mefichi has the advantage that if you look in the wrong place, it's obvious, if you try to post to the wrong place, it fails. And the password issue is pretty trivial...

SATURDAY: Still very much up in the air and depends largely on cortex's cashflow situation and how much sightseeing he wants to do. You can pretty much figure we'll do brunch at Big Jones at 11am, then possibly a jaunt out west to the Eli's Cheesecake Festival, then miscellaneous stops at cortex's whim. Figure 5pm at the Navy Pier Ferris Wheel, then a walk across Millennium Park, and Billy Goat at 7pm. After that, we may swing by Rock Bottom for a civilized drink, then get straight-up hammered at Rossi's.

cortex, if you just got your pilot's license then someone is going to have to refer to you as "little buddy" or "champ" in a spectacularly and avuncularly condescending way, like they're some sort of silver-haired wizard of the sky, even if they're definitely not.

Do you understand, champ? That's just how life is. Like the seasons. Or the sky. She's a bitch. She'll let you ride her but then she'll turn on you and fill your life with hellish turbulence. Like my ex-wife. Like this very advice. Stuttering. Incoherent. Terrible. Ready for take off.

And then some dramatic shit will happen and you'll save a puppy from the side of the road and there'll be lots of cinematic scenes of waving, golden straw while you do a voiceover of all the life lessons you learned from that crusty old pilot. Imagine a terrible heist movie (one last job) crossed with Airplane! and edited for a Lifetime channel audience.

IMPORTANT! If you want to be notified by SMS as we move from place to place throughout the weekend, do this:

1) Login or join twitter. Sorry, but that's just the way it is.

2) Go to Settings, then Devices, and add your cellphone number.

3) Go to the mefichi page and click the "Follow Me" button. It should change to "Following".

4) Click on the little cell phone next to the word "Following". You should get a bubble message saying "Updates are sent by SMS to your mobile phone".

I sent a link to eriko so he can enable the rebroadcasting of @replies to mefichi's followers, but we'll have to see if he has time to set that up.

Hey, in case anyone is driving in and is worried about parking: There is a bunch of free, easy parking in my neck of the woods, between Berteau and Montrose on the east side of Ravenswood. Green With You and I have tentative plans to meet up there and then take the Damen bus up to Edgewater. It's not super-close to Edgewater, TML, etc, but is right next to the Montrose brown line stop, so it should be pretty easy to get back, regardless of where we end up. There may well be reliable parking closer, but someone would know better than I.

Anyway, we'll be trying to meetup in that neck of the woods around 6-6:30, so if you want to come with, shoot me a MeFi Mail.

Gooooooooooo Rio!

I was going to suggest something similar before Rob beat me to the bunch. (No, really, I was.) For those who may be driving and planning on ending the night after Too Much Light, parking on my street/around my apartment (Hermitage and Paulina between Lawrence and Winnemac) is better than average. Thought no plentiful, you can usually find something and is only 2-4 blocks from Foster and Ashland (where TML is at)

Like an idiot, I closed down a bar on a weeknight because the nice couple I met kept buying rounds and letting my newbie ass beat them at Wii bowling, so though I plan on hooking up with you all eventually this evening, depending on if I can get out of work early and get a disco nap. Maybe they'll let me take a personal day because my Olympic-sized heart has had its Olympic dreams Olympically crushed.

(That is an Olympic lie.)

Yeah, there is decent parking on both Foster and Ashland, though the earlier you get there, the more luck you're likely to have. There's also an arts thing going on tonight, but I don't know how that might affect parking.

I'll be both there and square tonight, but tomorrow, we'll see about the noncheesecake-lover's (WTF?) cheesecake festival expedition et al--it all depends on how drunkening the drunkening I have tonight is, and past experience points to....very!

Yeah I'll be driving into the city for tonight's meetup so any parking suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There's lots of residential parking around the Edgewater and the Neo-Futurarium. There's also metered parking down by the Futurarium that should be free in the evening. Two things to watch out for:

1) Some of the residential parking is permitted. Which means you can't park there without a permit. Which you won't have. So watch out for signs which specify permit areas.

2) You can't park overnight on most major streets. (Foster, Ashland, etc.) So if you're going to leave your car somewhere overnight, make sure you're on a non-permitted side street.

("Permitted" in this post means "restricted by permit", not "allowed". Fucking English.)

Thanks to all you Chicago residents for having such a fun city, for being great hosts, and for having great guests. Your library DVDs, inclement weather, and train pick-pockets leave a little to be desired, however. But because of the former greatness the latter sadness was much mitigated.

The part of me that wants to talk about the entire Friday/Saturday craziness is fighting to break out so I'll just say I will certainly try to make as many meetups in the future as as I have time for and that the few pictures I took will go online sometime later today, assuming something shiny doesn't distract me too much.

posted by hydrophonic at 2:45 PM on October 4, 2009

pjern's wallet went missing sometime after leaving the Billy Goat and getting off the red line at Thorndale and the hypothesis is it was a pickpocket while getting on to the red line. I'm sure if pjern wishes to talk about it he can go into details.
posted by Green With You at 4:06 PM on October 4, 2009

We're pretty sure it was a pickpocket after the fact- the guy who weirdly 'stumbled' while getting on the train at Grand Ave., falling back into me, was undoubtedly the confederate of the actual pickpocket, who struck in the momentary jam at the door to the car. I think he's in one of misskaz's pictures on the train, sitting next to WCityMike.

Further proof seems to be in the pattern of bogus charges that started happening before we even got off the train at Thorndale- $92.00 for something (a pass?) at the CTA Union Station, $23 bucks at a White Castle, $53.00 at a Jewel.

I've already canceled the cards and arranged for new ones.
